AKAKA BILL STALLED FOR ANOTHER YEAR
The Honolulu Advertiser - July 30, 2007
WASHINGTON - As Congress heads toward a monthlong recess starting late this week, a bill dealing with Native Hawaiian self-government remains stalled on the road to floor action in the Senate and House with little chance for a vote before the fall.
The bill, which would create a process for a Native Hawaiian governing entity to be formed and gain federal recognition, cleared both House and Senate committees in the spring but has not moved since then.
Yet even if the bill clears the House and Senate - where it has been stalled for seven years - it faces an even taller hurdle in dealing with a possible White House veto.

ALOHA MAI KAKOU!
WELCOME IF YOU'RE VISITING FREEHAWAII.INFO FOR THE FIRST TIME!
Free Hawai`i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent nation status, as it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.
In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.
DID YOU KNOW -
98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow!
Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai`i is in Hawaiian hands.
Over 60% today is in non-Hawaiian hands!
A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai`i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians!
Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai`i.
Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai`i today.
Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators compared to any ethnic group in the US.
Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile compared to any ethnic group in the US.
Descendants of the Hawaiian Nation want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.

BRITISH DO WHAT THE U.S. HASN'T - RETURN HAWAI`I - ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
It was a wrong made right after five months - the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom when forced under British rule in 1843.
In the early 1840s, during the reign of King Kamehameha III, English consul Richard Charlton made outrageous land claims against the Hawaiian people to provoke a British takeover.
At his request, a British war cruiser arrived on Feb. 10, 1843, under the command of Lord George Paulet, who demanded special lands and rights from the king for British subjects.
In order to avoid bloodshed, Kamehameha III ceded his kingdom to Paulet under protest and appealed to Queen Victoria for redress.
British fleet commander Adm. Richard Thomas, enforcing his country's policy that the laws and customs of native governments be treated with courtesy and respect, sailed from Mexico to Hawai`i to remedy the trouble.
On July 31, 1843, Thomas ordered the Hawaiian flag raised and the kingdom restored at a ceremony at Kulaokahu`a -- which today is known as Thomas Square named after him.
Kamehameha III proclaimed a 10-day holiday, and throughout his reign, July 31 was celebrated as Ka La Ho'iho'i Ea or Sovereignty Restoration Day.
He also proclaimed the now famous motto, "Ua mau ke ea o ka `aina i ka pono," which means, "The sovereignty of the land is maintained by pono (right behavior.")
Mahalo to all who let us know how much you enjoy our new show with Doug Kahikina Chang, who is literally changing the face of tourism in Hawai`i.
It’s another example that the sovereignty of Hawai`i is indeed maintained by pono behavior right here on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“Hands In The Water - A Visit With Doug Kahikina Chang”
In the world of hospitality, blunt speech is seldom heard.
But then along came Doug Kahikina Chang and everything changed.
A student of hula, language and the Hawaiian culture from an early age, Doug is a true trailblazer in one of the places it counts the most – Hawai`i’s tour industry.
The first Native Hawaiian ever to be selected as chairperson of the Hawai`i Tourism Authority, Doug tells it like it is - native culture has been “used and abused for its entertainment value.”
In his younger days, he tells us he was ashamed to talk about his hotel job when he was back home.
Other Hawaiians would accuse him of selling out for the visitor at the expense of Hawai`i’s culture and land.
But no more.
Today Doug is at the helm of a huge paradigm shift at long last finally making native Hawaiians and the real Hawai`i the only, real and primary experience visitors have when they visit.
Be sure and catch our visit with this humble yet extraordinarily talented and brave Hawaiian who literally rose through the ranks from a humble beginning as a hotel dishwasher and airport lei greeter to become the internationally recognized leader of Hawai`i tourism. At long last, when Doug speaks, the powerful now listen.
Voices Of Truth interviews those creating a better future for Hawai`i to discover what made them go from armchair observers to active participants in the hopes of inspiring viewers to do the same.

KA LA HO`IHO`I EA - SOVEREIGNTY RESTORATION DAY - TO BE OBSERVED TOMORROW IN HAWAI`I
What Is Sovereignty Restoration Day?
Ka La Ho`iho`i Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day) celebrates the 1843 British withdrawal from their 5-month military occupation of Hawai`i.
This event was revived in 1985, and will be observed this Sunday from 10 AM - 5 PM at Thomas Square in Honolulu.
Thomas Square is named after the British military commander who withdrew the British military occupation from Hawai'i in 1843.
Since then, we call upon the US to withdraw from its illegal occupation of our homeland.
It took the British only five months to realize their mistake.
Why are we still waiting over one hundred years later for the United States to realize theirs?

WHEN SOMEONE ASKS,
"WHY IS INDEPENDENCE BETTER FOR HAWAI'I THAN FEDERAL RECOGNITION?" TELL THEM THIS -
Federal recognition (Akaka bill) is yesterday's solution.
It's thesis is again going hat in hand to the US federal government for help and turning Hawaiians inward and against each other in their own land.
For more than 100 years, this has not worked.
Instead, we can seize the opportunity to create a dynamic new nation through which we can maintain our culture and values, have more control over our future and be a leader among the pacific nations.
Let This Be Our Legacy To Future Generations.

WOULD THE LIVES OF HAWAIIANS IMPROVE UNDER THE AKAKA BILL & FEDERAL RECOGNITION?
Just look at these comments from the Senate Indian Affairs Committee of March 11, 2003 -
"Native people in the U.S. continue to rank at or near the bottom of nearly every social, health, and economic indicator, as compared to all other citizens.
"Natives continue to suffer the highest rates of unemployment and poverty, live in substandard housing, have poor health, receive an inadequate education, and contend with disintegrating social systems, all of which erode both the quality and dignity of life in Native communities.
There is also unmet demand for electricity in Native communities: a recent Department of Energy report estimated that 14.2% of all Native homes on reservations have no access to electricity compared to just 1.4% of all U.S. households.
"With unemployment averaging 43% and poverty rampant, Native communities are particularly sensitive to high energy prices.Given the near-complete absence of a private sector in most Native communities, 31.2 % of Natives live in poverty.
"In the U.S. today, the unemployment rate is 5.8%, whereas the rate for Natives is near 50% --- twice that of the national unemployment rate in the Great Depression.
"The earning capacity of Natives also lags behind that of other Americans: for every $100 earned by the average American family, an Indian family earns $62. The per capita income for Indians averages $8,284.
"Most striking are the health statistics involving Native people - diabetes, tuberculosis, alcoholism, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and increasingly, AIDS, plague Native communities at rates far and above the incidence for other Americans."

DOES AMERICA HAVE A MONOPOLY ON LOVE OF COUNTRY ?
In 1993, the U.S. admitted in US Public Law 103-150 that it violated its own Constitution, its treaties, international law and, by implication, all of the Christian teachings by perpetrating an outrageous armed theft of the Kingdom of Hawai`i and the forced American citizenship of Hawaiian national citizens.
America recognized in 1894, and again in 1993, that the Kingdom of Hawai`i has a right to exist.
The Hawaiian Nation has a right and obligation to enact and dictate land laws which prevent the selling of its lands to foreign speculators at prices which deny native nationals from living on their own home islands at an affordable price.
The Hawaiian nation has a right and obligation to protect and defend the quality of life, land, water, ocean and air.
The Hawaiian nation has a right and obligation to its citizens to provide the best in education, health care and housing.
Patriotism and love for our Nation of Hawai`i is what this all is about.

TELLING IT LIKE IT IS ABOUT TOURISM ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
It was November of last year a bomb was dropped in the Hawai`i tourism industry.
Doug Kahikina Chang, the first native Hawaiian ever to be selected as chairperson of the Hawai`i Tourism Authority, was giving his keynote address to the annual gathering of the Hawai`i Visitors and Convention Bureau.
He said “Tourism in Hawai`i is out of balance and needs to be put back in. The host culture is vibrant and exciting but… continually under siege.”
Then he stated, “The result was a distorted representation of Hawai`i and Hawaiians that was, at best, embarrassing and, often, offensive to the Hawaiian host culture.”
Finally he remarked, “It is no wonder then, that there has been a rift between the Native Hawaiian community and the visitor industry.”
Doug speaks from experience.
He rose from a lei greeter at Honolulu Airport to the position now of actually fixing what’s wrong with tourism and changing the future of Hawai`i.
And here’s Doug Kahikina Chang’s first steps for making Hawai`i’s visitor industry more authentic -
Do you have a Hawaiian dictionary at your desk?
Do you have Place Names of Hawai`i by Mary Kawena Pukui?
Do you use them?
Do you know who Mary Kawena Pukui is?
Put traditional Hawaiian music back into your hotels, restaurants and shops. Support our Hawaiian language schools, hula halau and canoe clubs in their fundraising efforts
Volunteer to work on a natural or cultural restoration project. There are many such projects on each island and they all need kokua.
Buy from local practitioners of art and culture even if it costs more.
Identify someone on your staff, or better a group, who has cultural knowledge and use them outside their traditional roles to guide you. But be careful. If you do this, listen to them even if it is not the most popular choice.
Lastly, don’t fabricate experiences, if it is not culturally correct, don’t do it. Just look at your lu`au for a starting point!
In a brand new Voices Of Truth show we sit down with Doug and hear about his vision for the future – and how Hawai`i can and should become a model for all the world to see – one that places Hawaiians and the Hawaiian culture first and primary, and not as an afterthought.
Doug’s one of those who knows Hawai`i and Hawaiians are part of the solution to what ails the world, rather than the problem.
So check out this breath of fresh air this week right here on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“A Journey Of Occupation – A Visit With Andre Perez”
What would it be like to be in the US military for eight years, then find yourself living on the streets?
That’s what happened to Andre Perez who went from one extreme to another.
And from the streets, he found his way into the Kaho`olawe occupation, which, by his own accounts, was a life-changing experience.
It had to be because Andre’s never at a loss for words when it comes to defending his people that led him to the next chapter of his life.
Currently the spokesperson for Hui Pu, as well as a Halau Lokahi teacher, Andre recently found himself in the middle of yet another occupation – the dramatic taking of `Iolani Palace by Hui Pu to publicly oppose the Akaka bill.
As we look to the future of Hawai`i, we’re sure you’ll agree with us that Andre and others like him will play a prominent role in it.
Don’t miss our visit with Andre who’s part of the new generation of warriors who are as fearless as they are articulate. You’ll see why he’s a role model for the `opio (youth) of today as well as a leader for tomorrow.

THOSE WHO SIGN OFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIR'S KAU INOA ARE NOT EDUCATED OR INFORMED
"I am concerned about the Hawai`i state formed entity that portrays to work in the best interest of the Hawaiians.
The July OHA newsletter – Ka Wai Ola – contained an article from Trustee Rowena Akana titled: "Now is the time to Kau Inoa" where she lays out our path to achieving a false dream.
Her article lays out the path that leads to Americanism through deception to our people.
Those who sign their name to Kau Inoa aka OHA are not educated, nor are they being informed of all their inherent rights as Hawaiians."

HOW DOES HAWAI`I TREAT
HAWAIIANS ?
Despite a strong state economy, the homeless rate in Hawai`i has nearly doubled over the past four years.
The majority of the new homeless are native Hawaiians and those with some Hawaiian ancestry.
From fabled Waikiki Beach, one of the places where the homeless congregate on O`ahu, to the neighboring islands that conjure the image of paradise to planeloads of tourists who arrive daily, there is increasing tension between the thousands of homeless people, their advocates, and state, city, and county governments.
Hawaiians represent only about 23 percent of the state's population, but the state survey suggested they make up 37 percent of the state's homeless population.

WHAT DO HAWAIIAN NATIONALS
WANT ?
Here Is What They Say About Themselves, Their Countrymen And The United States -
"The most common sense thing is for total independence.
We were a progressive modern nation of our time and recognized as a friendly, neutral nation within the Family of Nations, the predecessor of the League of Nations and the United Nations.
We had a democratic form of government, a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislative assembly.
The works and legacies of our monarchs are legendary and noteworthy.
Today under the American system, we are concerned about our lands, culture, people and lifestyle which has been under attack for over a hundred years.
This gets us angry as more Hawaiians desire total independence as a result.
The Kingdom of Hawai`i is not only Native Hawaiians but subjects of non-Hawaiian blood who were legitimate subjects of the Kingdom.
This racial argument is an American thing and not a Hawaiian thing.
So our concerns are well within our scope to protect all our subjects of the Kingdom.
We do expect reparations and restitution from the US for the injurious damages to our nation, land and people.
The US government is well aware of this and is attempting a piecemeal settlement.
If the tables were turned around; which would you do? I'm sure it wouldn't be a hard decision.
Remember, Hawaiians never hated Americans; but only those that did harm to us and the US government for its complicity and deceit.
We were never afraid that another country would take us over; we had over twenty-four treaties with various countries but the US is the only country that broke their treaties with us."
That should tell you something.

A WARRIOR WITH ALOHA ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
In our final look this week at the Boston Ti Party of 2000, we’ve saved the best for last.
The day after in Boston, the late John Butch Kekahu III, received an award acknowledging the dedication of his life to the cause of a Free Hawai`i.
It was Butch’s vision and leadership that brought supporters together for not only the Boston Ti Party, but also both Aloha Marches in 1998 and 2000 in Washington, DC.
It was Butch who helped spearhead many acts of protest against the illegal US occupation of Hawai`i both on his native of Kaua`i as well as throughout the islands.
And it was also Butch’s unwavering convictions that caused him to do jail time over the years rather than capitulate to the occupiers.
So this week on Free Hawai`i TV we bring you never before seen footage of Butch with his award as he movingly compares it to the high school diploma he never received.
Ironically later that day Butch spoke at MIT, one of the most prestigious colleges in the US.
Be sure and check out Butch this week on Free Hawai`i TV as he speaks emotionally from his heart on what it means to be a true warrior – with aloha.
If it’s rich traditional indigenous knowledge you’re seeking, we have it - whether on Free Hawai`i TV, or in this weeks shows on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP HAWAI`I RECOVER ITS INDEPENDENCE ?
US Americans should start using critical thinking in resolving the Hawaiian issue.
If, in fact, the US is unlawfully occupying Hawai`i; logically it should deoccupy it.
One should become familiar with the laws of occupation to understand the issues.
One will also understand the folly of attempting to turn Hawaiians into American indians and tribes through federal recognition and what it seditiously represents.
The misrepresentation of the facts have been fostered on the US Americans and what has and is being done in their name.
Amid the myths and hoax lie documented facts with US admittance of misprison through covert and overt activities to destabilize the Hawaiian Kingdom, invasion, and takeover through a declaration among those involved, with the complicity of the USA and unbeknownst to the subjects of the Kingdom over a century ago.
This then took shape in a fake revolution to validate the nefarious actions spurred by the US government officials and their US American counterparts residing within the Hawaiian Kingdom.

OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS LOBBYIST HAS BLOOD OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES ON HIS HANDS
OHA Stoops To New Lows To Get Akaka Bill Passed
OHA has refused to disclose detailed records of its Washington lobbying campaign, claiming that because the work was performed by law firms, the records are protected by the attorney-client privilege.
A protest of OHA's refusal to reveal the billing records itemized accounts of who was lobbied and what expenses were incurred has been pending before the state Office of Information Practices for more than a year.
OHA spent $1.8 million on Akaka bill lobbying by a major Washington, D.C., lobbying firm, Patton Boggs, according to federal lobbying records.
When the lobbying contract was signed in May 2003, Boggs was charging $735 per hour for his services.
According to author Anne Keala Kelly, "When Boggs Jr.'s firm was known as Patton Boggs & Blow, Boggs lobbied the hill during the Carter Administration against restrictions on the sale of weapons to Guatemala . The firm represented the Guatemalan General turned President, Romeo Lucas Garcia.
Boggs personally represented Amigos del Pais, a group of landowners in Guatemala that helped fund Garcia's death squads, supported throughout the 1980s by the Reagan Administration's CIA, and responsible for the deaths of over two hundred thousand of Guatemala's Indigenous peoples, workers, and human rights activists.
That the Office of Hawaiian Affairs would put themselves into business—and by proxy, all the Indigenous people of Hawai`i—with a firm that has a history of representing the interests of systemic murderers of Indigenous peoples is indeed troublesome."

WHO WINS IN A FREE AND INDEPENDENT HAWAI'I ? EVERYONE !
One of the biggest lies perpetuated today is that when Hawai`i achieves nationhood once again it will be at the expense of everyone else.
But no one will be kicked out; their businesses seized or their homes and property confiscated.
Instead, everyone, Hawaiians and all others, will be citizens of the sovereign and independent Nation of Hawai`i.
The Hawaiian Nation included people of many ethnic backgrounds that were loyal citizens before the illegal overthrow and it will be so again.
The truth is a sovereign Hawaiian nation will need the contributions and talents of all of its citizens to remain viable in the world.
Hawaiians would be no better than the very supremacists that overthrew and occupied them were they to divide people by race.
Hawaiians have always been inclusive, not exclusive.
How would this be accomplished politically given a civil war resulted the last time a state tried to leave the US?
Unlike the southern US states, the Kingdom of Hawai`i and its citizens never agreed to become part of the United States in the first place.
Therefore a move for Hawai`i to secede from the US would be both unnecessary and inappropriate.
Much like removing the top coat of paint to reveal the one underneath, the US Congress, after consultation between Hawaiians and the US at the level of state to state, could simply enact a US federal law that dissolves the entity known as the "state government" in Hawai`i.
What would be left in its place is what has existed all along anyway without interruption – the Nation of Hawai`i.
Only at that point, would it be appropriate for the citizens of Hawai`i to decide their future as it relates to a relationship with the United States.
Those possibilities would include –
Full Independence - Joining once again the family of nations in the world.
Free Association – Much like Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia.
Integration with the US – Becoming a state again or a tribe of the US under federal recognition.
Did you know ? -
When Ronald Reagan was president, one of the most conservative US presidents in recent times, his administration actually granted the Marshall Islands independence in 1986, which then lead to a free association relationship with the US.
Precedent for Hawaiian independence exists right now within US law as outlined above.
There are no laws that exist today within the US to prevent the US federal government from dissolving a state government.
It is only fear and ignorance that holds the status quo in place.

HERE'S THE EFFECT OF OVER A CENTURY OF US OCCUPATION IN HAWAI`I ON NATIVE HAWAIIANS
The Hawaiian people, have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.
Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.
At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.
By 1805 that number had been halved.
By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.
Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.
According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.
But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.
Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population and 37 percent of the state's homeless population.

BOSTON TI PARTY & MAUI'S CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS ON FREE HAWAI`I TV & VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
We continue our look back this week at the Boston Ti Party, which occurred seven years ago this last Wednesday.
A group of Hawaiians and supporters descended on Boston harbor from Hawai`i and across the U.S. led by the late John Butch Kekahu III, founder of the Koani Foundation.
They tossed ti leaf leis off the side of the very same ship in Boston harbor that American revolutionaries had used over two hundred years ago.
Their purpose was to send Washington DC and the world a message from aboard that ship - Free Hawai`i.
“I have dedicated my life to taking this message as far as I can take it,” stated Butch.
Throughout this month, we’ll be airing segments about Butch and the Boston Ti Party on Free Hawai`i TV a part of the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network.
This week you’ll see more rare footage of the marchers chanting “I Ku Mau Mau” as they weave their way through downtown Boston, as well as hear mana`o (thoughts) of Butch Kekahu in his own words.
And if you haven’t caught Sam Ka`ai or Joanne Kahanamoku Sterling yet, here’s your chance as we continue our coverage of the 15th Annual Celebration of the Arts in Kapalua, Maui in April.
Show co-host Kai`opua Fyfe interviewed some amazing individuals indeed, and you can see them right here this week on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

DID YOU KNOW? -
Of the 40,000 non Kingdom subjects in Hawai`i at the time of the illegal 1898 overthrow, only 1,928 or so were U.S. nationals as documented by the 1900 census.
They represented less than 3% of the entire population.
The rest of the non U.S. aliens were not supportive of the illegal annexation of Hawai`i by the US.
This means that less than 3% of the population, all U.S. aliens, hijacked the Hawaiian Nation against the wishes of almost everybody else.

KAILUA-KONA - Mikahala Roy, caretaker of the Ahuena Heiau in Kailua-Kona, has filed for a court order to continue as kahu or guardian in accordance with the wishes of her late father.
Roy is the daughter of David "Mauna" Roy, who rebuilt the heiau in 1975 and served as its kahu until his death in 2005.
King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel, where the heiau stands, recognizes an alternate group as caretakers and is seeking to evict Roy from hotel office space....
The matter came to a head last week when InvestWest Financial/Pacifica Hotel Co. completed purchase of the hotel fronting Kailua Bay....
The heiau in question, a small rock platform with a thatched house on it, honors Lono, the god of peace and prosperity....

HERE'S HOW THE US GOVERNMENT, WITH THE HELP OF THE OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS, IS PLANNING TO STEAL THE HAWAIIAN NATION - ONCE AND FOR ALL!
By their own laws, the US cannot simply walk in and take Hawaiian land titles and erase the word "Royal" and replace it with "United States" Patent.
They and the State of Hawai`i have never had "Clear Title" since Jan 17, 1893.
They all know this - have known for a long time.
The only way the United States will ever be able to get clear title to the Hawaiian Islands is if Hawaiians give it to them.
This is why title to the Hawaiian Islands never transferred to the United States by the Newlands resolution. The Newlands resolution relied on the treaty of Annexation from the republic of Hawai`i.
But the republic never owned title because the Kingdom of Hawai`i never gave it to them.
But Now They Have A Plan...
They are going to get Hawaiians to give title to them. How are they going to do that?
Here's how -
They are going to register a majority of Hawaiians on a "roll."
They are going to draft governing documents to "re-organize the Hawaiian government".
They are going to get Hawaiians to elect officers to that government.
They are going to make sure those governing documents give the officers of the government the authority to give away title in negotiations.
They are going to get the majority of Hawaiians on the roll to vote for the new governing documents to reorganize the Hawaiian government.
That government authorized and approved by the majority of Hawaiians is going to sit down at the negotiating table with the United States and trade land title for cash and benefits.
Many people believe that only the Kingdom of Hawai`i is authorized to give a way title to the Hawaiian Islands.... and they are correct, but only as long as the kingdom remains intact.
If the majority of its subjects revolt by forming a new government, the kingdom no longer exists. This is the effect of popular revolution.
The bill is only the bait. The hook is the formation of a new government and the negotiations between the U.S. and the new government. As long as Hawaiians don't bite the bait...the hook is harmless....The bill is not intended to settle any claims.... The bill dos not tell Hawaiians, but asks them to form a government that can and will extinguish Hawaiians claims.

BOSTON TI PARTY REMEMBERED ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE-WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
Seven years ago this Wednesday, a group of Hawaiians and supporters descended on Boston harbor from Hawai`i and across the U.S.
Led by the late John Butch Kekahu III, founder of the Koani Foundation, they gathered for a single purpose – the Boston Ti Party.
It was an event that not only made the front page of every single newspaper in Hawai`i, but countless more across the U.S. and throughout the world.
Their purpose was to send Washington DC and the world a message from aboard the very same ship in Boston harbor that American revolutionaries had used over two hundred years ago.
Their message was simple – Free Hawai`i – and their method unique.
They tossed ti leaf leis off the side of the ship into the waters of Boston Harbor.
“America’s founders risked their lives for freedom and political self-determination,” Butch replied when asked why he had come. “Are native Hawaiians wrong to want the same thing?”
Afterwards Butch remarked, “I was there to make the same announcement as Paul Revere, just in the Hawaiian way.”
Throughout this month, we’ll be airing segments about Butch and the Boston Ti Party on Free Hawai`iTV a part of the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network.
Don’t miss it. You’ll see photos and actual video of the event as well as hear and see Butch Kekahu in some never before aired footage.
