HAWAI'I DESERVES INDEPENDENCE
The Maui News - Friday, March 25, 2005
We are not Native Americans. We want independence, not another government running our affairs in Hawaii.
Enough, Gov. Linda Lingle, Sens. Daniel Inouye and Dan Akaka, and even the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
I know that you all aren't looking out for the best of our people because if you were there would be no more houseless kanaka maoli [Native Hawaiians] on the beaches and streets. They would have a house to call home and not a waiting list.
How many of our kupuna [elders] died waiting?
The Indians and Eskimos have gotten recognition that made them slaves again to the de facto government. They became dependents to the United States.
Do we want that? I pray not.
