HAWAIIANS TO OBSERVE ANCIENT HISTORIC BATTLE
Na Papa Kanaka o Pu`ukohola Heiau Extends Invitation To Annual Commemoration Of The Battle Of Nu`uanu
This is the 13th year that we gather to remember the Battle of Nu`uanu which was fought in 1795.
The ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at the Pali lookout on O`ahu and will begin at 6:00 a.m.
Traditional chants and hula will follow.
Guest speakers will give the history of the battle and the warriors involved.
The tradition of honoring the warriors of the Battle of Nu`uanu began in 1995 at the 200th anniversary of the battle.
This commemoration consisted of a midnight walk from Kapi`olani Park, Waikiki, and reached the Pali summit at dawn. We were honored to have a large attendance of almost 1000 on that walk. It was a memorable and moving event.
Since then we have marked the anniversary with the greeting of the dawn following ancient protocol.
The public is invited to attend this annual remembrance and are welcome to bring ho`okupu (a gift from the heart.)
Come here the stories of the past. We are who we were.
