QUICKEST WAY TO KILL THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE-WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

All too often visitors witness Hawaiian culture in the context of “this is how we were,” rather than “this is how we are.

“Yes, the overthrow was illegal but that’s over and done. Like it or not, you’re all Americans now.”

Sound familiar?

The simple truth is Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) and Hawaiian Kingdom Nationals will never be Americans automatically.

They’ll only become US citizens if they themselves choose to, since Hawai`i never legally became part of the US.

Yet the Office of Hawaiian Affairs tells us “we’re all Americans now,” in proof again they’re working against Hawaiians when they should be working for them.

Worse, while attempting to gain more signatures on their bogus Kau Inoa registry, it’s been revealed they’ll actually be using that list to claim signers support the Akaka bill – federal recognition, which would turn Kanaka Maoli into American indians and classify them as wards of the US federal government, the same status US federal prisoners enjoy.

What effect will this have on the health and vitality of the Hawaiian culture?

It doesn’t take a genius to answer that.

Hawaiians know the future and the vitality of the culture lies not in Kau Inoa or federal recognition, but in a Free Hawai`i.

We bring you two inspiring examples of that this week in Sabra Kauka of Kaua`i and Marie Beltran of O`ahu.

Both powerful wahine Maoli (Hawaiian women) show us ever so clearly the answers and future are within the genius of each Kanaka Maoli, and not 4,000 miles away in Washington, DC.

Take a moment and catch them here this week, and you’ll see exactly what we mean on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

"Carrier Of The Culture – A Visit With Sabra Kauka”

Since Sabra lasted visited us on Voices Of Truth, she hasn’t stopped for a minute, doing what she does best – preserving the culture.

She shares with us in telling and pictures about her participation in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC. as the leader of the Hawaiian weavers delegation for Carriers of Culture: Living Native Basket Traditions.

Then Sabra gives us a tantalizing review and much background information on the phenomenal Ho`okahi Kapa - the contemporary kapa exhibit at Bishop Museum with more incredible photos.

And finally if all that isn’t enough, she goes on to describe what very few have ever gotten to see firsthand on her own island - Nu`alolo Kai, an ancient Kaua`i valley left untouched for hundreds of years the way the people of old left it.

Don’t miss this incredible segment as Sabra describes her involvement in the caretaking of this amazing site on the Na Pali Coast. The entire show is filled with stories and photos you’ll long remember of all three events.

SATURDAY, April 21st At 8:00 PM O`ahu - ‘Olelo, Channel 53

“Life On The Beach – A Visit With Marie Beltran”

What would it be like to be houseless and living on the beach with your family?

Marie Beltran has called Mokule`ia beach home for the last fourteen years.

Yet here’s the most amazing part – she lives there because she wants to.

Marie tells us she’s had visitors literally from all over the world come and visit – and sometimes stay for dinner.

And even though she has aloha for everyone, don’t take her for granted. She’s quick to remind us all that aloha is a two way street.

You’ll hear her message to the US federal government – “We treated you with aloha when you arrived; now treat us with aloha by returning our Nation.”

Don’t miss this moving segment with this very special person, See life through the eyes of a family which lives life far simpler than most of us, yet rich with aloha for everyone.
