Subject: Misguided negativity
Apparently there are some hateful anti-homesteader posts going around Facebook about some of the incredible work being done by homestead associations all across the state - exercising their right to self determination and self governance. This gal [Theresa Keohunani Taber} seems to be completely unaware that homestead associations with their member HHCA beneficiaries on the land and on the waitlist have existed for decades, and doing good work for themselves and their families.
This gal is railing against the work of Waimea nui homesteaders on big island, that are working on updating their homestead constitution, something they have every right to do! Every HHcA beneficiary should applaud them. Yay!
If anyone knows this gal, please help her to understand that homestead associations consist of HHCA beneficiaries members that voluntarily enroll. Also, to know that SCHHA is 100% governed by homestead associations, the HHCA is our business. Moreover, the last 3 CEOs of CNHA are homesteaders, serving on their respective homestead boards!
It’s just amazing to see someone try to tell leaders to stay out of homestead associations when they are homesteaders! Weirdly too, is that DHHL has a long history of encouraging homestead associations to do exactly as they are doing. They need only the consent of their members - if you aren’t a member of Waimea nui, then no need your consent. In addition, the HHCA is a federal law, that absolutely recognizes the rights of HHCA beneficiaries, for 100 years now.
Mahalo everyone - this hateful and erroneous rhetoric is just unhealthy. Very concerning to see this kind of attack on us as homesteaders, and the incredible work of the Waimea people!
Creator, bless our people on the homesteads. And bless this individual to become educated on our kuleana and rights as HHCA beneficiaries. Amen.
