Oh, so thatʻs why McKinley (on the left) "annexed" Hawai`i... it was "For Humanityʻs Sake."
Sounds like a nice motive.
But, McKinley was not a humanitarian. Far from it.
This guy oversaw the breakup of the Five Civilized (Indian) Nations and triggered the awful genocide of at least 250,000 Filipinos.
McKinley acted like the ruthless taking of Hawai`i was an honorable act of humanitarian generosity... placing the Hawaiian Islands under the rule of white Americans to save these poor, inferior, primitive Hawaiians from themselves.
McKinley stood as a champion of Manifest Destiny... white supremacy draped in the American flag.
Thatʻs why there shouldn't be a school (or anything else in Hawai`i) named after him.
By the way, he was succeeded by the guy on the right, his vice president, Theodore Roosevelt, who wasn't much better.
