Renaming McKinley High School
On Thursday, the State House Education Committee “deferred” (did not act on) two resolutions that would urge the Board of Education to change the name of McKinley High School back to Honolulu High School.
The text of the resolutions and the majority of the testimonies pointed out President McKinley’s nefarious role in causing the illegal annexation of Hawaii, the expansion of the American empire, racism, white supremacy and colonialism — all solid reasons why there should no longer be a school in Hawaii named for McKinley.
The majority of testimonies supported the name-change (including McKinley grads and staff and the HSTA) and cited the factual historical injustices. But a number of emotional McKinley High School alumni put school loyalty first, opposing the name-change based on sentimental ties to the school, which they somehow felt was inseparable from the McKinley name.
Apparently they love their school so much (which is understandable) they don’t care that it is named for a man responsible for the illegal annexation of Hawaii and a 100-plus years of occupation, subjugation, displacement, pain and injury to the people of the Hawaiian Kingdom. For some reason the pro-McKinley testifiers think that changing the name, changes their history… as if the outstanding accomplishments of its students and faculty would suddenly be expunged if the McKinley name was removed. Even the principal used the word, “erased.”
Their attitude boiled down to, ‘So what if McKinley caused bad things to happen to the Hawaiians?… It doesn’t concern us… So get over it… Leave us alone…’
They were so self-absorbed in how a name-change might affect them, they refused to notice the profound effect the overthrow, annexation, statehood, ethnic, cultural and economic beat-down, had on all the people of the Hawaiian Islands… (probably from whom many of the testifiers descended). These testifiers complained they would be wronged by this a minor name change, while being clueless about how our kupuna had their whole country stolen and put under 123 years of foreign occupation!
The display of blind loyalty and blind self-interest to keep the status quo, is a chilling wake-up call for us. If people react this irrationally to simply changing the name of McKinley High School back to Honolulu High School, they would go absolutely bonkers over changing from the “State of Hawaii” (USA) back to the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands.
The resolutions remind us of how deeply-rooted the American indoctrination is in our society. To Hawaiian-Americans, McKinley is a hero because he made the Hawaiian Islands into a U.S. territory (even though he cheated). But, to Hawaiians who have learned the truth of what really happened, McKinley is definitely not a hero, but an international criminal… a ruthless pirate who grabbed Hawaii to expand U.S. imperialism.
Now that the door has been opened for public discussion, we have a great opportunity to educate everybody and rally support. Name-change… to game-change to… game-over.
It’s time to hele mua...
This is the opportune time to move forward to initiate The Huli... to flip the tables and restore our Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands. If we can muster the political will, we can do this! International mechanisms (like de-occupation) are available to help us restore our nation to reflect values and priorities rooted in aloha ʻāina, mālama pono, kapu aloha...
------
The more we stand as a nation and assert the Hawaiian Kingdom is alive and kicking, the more obvious the U.S. false claim becomes and the sooner we will be a Free Hawaii.
