Change McKinley Name Supporters Stand Up To Big Lie
Coalition Of Hawaiian Nationals (CHN) crashed a gathering this last Saturday of those who are opposed to changing the name of McKinley High School.
CHN members passed out an informational flyer at the Pensacola Street entrance to McKinley High School to explain why the name of McKinley High School should be changed.
The effort was to dispel the rumor spreading among some older McKinley School alumni that the requested name change is somehow going to close down or otherwise harm the school or tarnish its students. That misunderstanding at the school.
Leon Siu, a spokesman for CHN says: “The reason for requesting the name change is to correct the false narrative that President William McKinleyʻs actions toward Hawai`i were benevolent and constructive, when they were anything but.”
Recent years have revealed that, McKinley was a rabid white supremacist and imperialist who advocated not only the taking of the Hawaiian Islands based on “military necessity” and Manifest Destiny, but unleashed tremendous bloodshed and atrocities in the Philippines leaving between 250,00 and a million Filipinos dead. His foreign policies set the pattern for arbitrary. violent American intervention and regime changes in dozens of countries over the past 120 years.
The lie of Hawai`iʻs annexation is integral to the name of William McKinley. Given the high school’s long history for promoting social justice and civic responsibility, as well as its education of numerous students and community leaders, the fake annexation by McKinley completely contradicts the integrity and honor for which the school is known.
For 115 years, the school has stood as a lie. This great school deserves a better name.
