KE AUPUNI UPDATE - DECEMBER 2025

Hidden in Plain Sight

Hawaii is one of the most recognized place on Earth and among the most highly regarded. The word “Aloha” is known throughout the world.

In my 50-plus years of travel, whenever I’d mention I’m from Hawaii, people get dreamy-eyed with visions of white sandy beaches, tropical beauty, romance. Invariably they’d say, “I’ve always wanted to go there…” or “I was there for my (relative’s, friend’s) wedding and it was beautiful.”

But mention to them about Hawaii being under a belligerent occupation by the United States, and most people get totally confused. They’ve never heard of it! They think that everything is just perfect and everybody’s happy.

Of the more than 9 million tourists who actually visit Hawaii every year, nearly all leave without realizing that they visited an occupied sovereign nation.

Only a few like those who take the time to tour Iolani Palace or happen to see a demonstration over land issues or pass homeless encampments along the streets and beaches get an inkling that all is not right in Paradise. But by and large, most of our visitors are oblivious to the fact that Hawaiians are suffering under a prolonged foreign occupation.

If those who come here leave without knowing about our true status, what of the people all over the world? We tend to think that because we are so immersed day-to-day with the reality of dealing with the hostile occupation, that the rest of the world sees our struggle. The truth is, they don’t. Our situation is invisible to most of the world — hidden in plain sight!

Creating visibility is our biggest challenge to gaining wide-spread international support for Hawaii’s independence. The US has been so successful in convincing the world that Hawaii is happily a State of the United States that our 50-plus-years’ struggle for liberation is still invisible to the world.

Yes Hawaii is universally loved by people around the world, but they still don’t know we are a sovereign nation under what UN Independent Expert, Dr. Alfred deZayas calls, “… a strange form of occupation…”.

Yes, our cause is well known here in Hawaii and in diplomatic and legal circles around the world, but the global public still holds in their minds the image of the Hawaii created by United States propaganda over the past 127.5 years since the fake annexation.

The diplomatic and legal questions are ready to be raised this year at various international venues. But to gain real attention and traction, they need popular political support from the general public, from governments and non-governmental organizations.

In order for this to happen, the world needs to see us asserting our national rights as the people of our independent nation. Watch for announcements soon on how you can help raise the visibility of a Free Hawaii.
