Introducing Hawaii
His Excellency Leon Kaulahao Siu is the Minister of Foreign Affairs for the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands (Ke Aupuni Hawaii Ko Hawaii Pae Aina), also known as the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Minister Siu has been a frequent representative of the Hawaiian Kingdom as an invited Observer to the Meetings of the Polynesian Leaders Group, since 2018, when the Polynesian states of Hawaii, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and Rapanui (Easter Island) were admitted as Observer Members of the PLG.
Foreign Minister Siu is from the tiny fishing village of Miloliʻi on the island of Hawaiʻi. He has a diverse background in native arts, fine arts and media. He is an accomplished visual artist, musician, vocalist, recording artist, composer, poet, author, producer and director of audio, film and video. He is known for his work in cross-disciplined, cross-cultural, multi-arts projects.
Mr. Siu is the only Hawaiian to have a composition recorded by the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra. He has composed soundtrack music for award-winning documentary films, including the 1977 National Geographic film, The Voyage of the Hōkūleʻa, a Polynesian voyaging canoe that 40 years later, circumnavigated the globe to emphasize the need to care for Planet Earth. Mr. Siu has created numerous recordings in a variety of musical genres. He remains active in producing audio and video recordings and performing in various venues throughout the Hawaiian Islands and occasionally abroad.
Mr. Siu is one of the leaders involved in a spiritual and cultural revival among Hawaiians. As an extension of that, he is also an overseer of global spiritual gatherings that serve to affirm in indigenous peoples around the world the beauty, grace, strength and purposes of the Creator within native traditions and cultures.
Mr. Siu is an astute political analyst, strategist and activist and has received several awards and recognition for his work in affecting public policy. He is engaged in communicating the message of liberation for Hawaii to the United Nations, the European Union and other international bodies, raising awareness of the continuity of the Hawaiian Kingdom throughout the global community.
Mr. Siu is a popular speaker at colleges, seminars, conferences, community gatherings, webinars, podcasts and other platforms on topics ranging from, ancient and modern Hawaiian history and culture, to American pop culture, to the arts, to current events and local and international politics. He has a notable presence in print and a wide range of electronic media in Hawaii and internationally.
Minister Siu is the co-author (along with Prof. Dr. h.c. Mehmet Sükrü Güzel) of the expositional book, Modus Vivendi Situation of West Papua (2018). Mr. Siu also served as editor for the seminal books, Perpetuated in Righteousness by Dr. Daniel K. Kikawa and Hawaii the Fake State; A Nation in Captivity (2008), by the late Aran A. Ardaiz.
Hawaii
The Hawaiian Kingdom is in the process of being restored as a
sovereign, independent country. As it’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Siuʻs
duties are: to raise international visibility for the Hawaiian Kingdom; to facilitate the normalization and resumption of diplomatic relations; and to engage in matters of mutual interests and concerns. Minister Siu is a strategist and proponent for self-determination and for ending all forms of colonialism.
He has led the Hawaiian Kingdom’s engagement in global dialogs on sustainability, sea level rise, demilitarization and the banning of nuclear weapons. He participated in international conferences at Columbia University on the threat to national sovereignty due to sea-level rise and the reunification of the Korean Peninsula. He is also involved in discussions on development, economic, environmental and security issues in the Pacific with various regional organizations such as the Melanesian Spearhead Group, the Pacific Islands Development Forum, the Polynesian Leaders Group and the Pacific Islands Forum.
Minister Siu was nominated for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for his collaborative work in advocacy of independence for West Papua. Also in 2017, he was a recipient of the Decree of Consecration Diploma and Gold Medal UN Peacemaker Sergio Vieira de Mello Award (Brazil). In 2015 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Kamehameha for meritorious work in representing the Hawaiian Kingdom in international affairs.
