KE AUPUNI UPDATE - APRIL 2026
Think Like A Hawaiian, Not American
It took us a long time to figure out that Hawaii is not part of the United States of America and that we, who descended from subjects of the Hawaiian Kingdom, are not Americans, but Hawaiians (that is, those who choose to identify as such). But knowing that as fact and living that as a reality are two different things. Old ways are hard to die, especially if we had been raised with them as common practices.
One of those old ways is, getting caught up in the political controversies and shenanigans going on in the US and trying to do something about it. Getting all worked up and taking sides in volatile issues like US immigration policies, border control, ICE roundups and deportations, voter qualification, liberal vs conservative, right wing vs left wing, traps us into thinking and acting as if we are Americans.
Also, many suffer from Stockholm Syndrome, a mental/emotional condition that develops when a kidnapped person comes to sympathize and identify with his/her kidnapper’s thinking or cause.
The occupation of Hawaii has been so prolonged, pronounced and profound that it’s taking a lot longer for many to grasp the reality that we are not Americans. That we are Hawaiians; and we need to shift our thinking and actions to reflect that.
One way to wean ourselves of the bad habit of thinking like an American is to take those same controversies and ask yourself, how would these issues apply to an independent Hawaii? How would we deal with them? For instance:
Border security. The Hawaiian Kingdom adopted and enforced strict laws to keep undesirable persons from entering or setting down roots in Hawaii. It worked, but as it turned out, the danger came from within when a few subjects and resident aliens who got greedy and treasonous. They not only overthrew the government and seized control, they opened the floodgates to American militarization and massive immigration to completely overwhelm the local population. So, the reinstated Hawaiian Kingdom needs to be extra vigilant about immigration.
Arresting illegal aliens – When the Hawaiian Kingdom is reinstated, there will definitely be policies adopted to remove those who do not belong here; that is, those who refuse to register as aliens or to abide by the laws of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Who gets to vote? – Though there will initially be a preponderance of alien residents in Hawaii, only Hawaiian nationals, those who identify themselves as subjects of the Hawaiian Kingdom will be allowed to vote. This is the same standard used in all democratic countries, except the US which currently seems to be confused about the matter of voting.
The “No Kings” demonstrations. “No Kings” is a distinctly American aversion due to the dictatorial actions by King George III that triggered the American Revolution 250 years ago. But Hawaii’s experience with Kings is the complete opposite. Every one of our Kings and Queens did their best to carry out their sacred duty to protect, uplift and Aloha the people of Hawaii.
Ironically, it is the so-called freedom-loving American’s illegal occupation of our nation that has impoverished, enslaved and abused our people and our lands. So let’s not think that an American style republic is an ideal form of government.
To be an independent country, we have to stop being Americans. We have to think and act like Hawaiians.
