BRITISH DID WHAT THE US HASN'T - RETURN HAWAI`I
Friday is La Ho`iho`i Ea - Sovereignty Restoration day in Hawai`i.
It was a wrong made right after five months - the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom when forced under British rule in 1843.
In the early 1840s, during the reign of King Kamehameha III, English consul Richard Charlton made outrageous land claims against the Hawaiian people to provoke a British takeover.
At his request, a British war cruiser arrived on Feb. 10, 1843, under the command of Lord George Paulet, who demanded special lands and rights from the king for British subjects.
In order to avoid bloodshed, Kamehameha III ceded his kingdom to Paulet under protest and appealed to Queen Victoria for redress.
British fleet commander Adm. Richard Thomas, enforcing his country's policy that the laws and customs of native governments be treated with courtesy and respect, sailed from Mexico to Hawai`i to remedy the trouble.
On July 31, 1843, Thomas ordered the Hawaiian flag raised and the kingdom restored at a ceremony at Kulaokahu`a - which today is known as Thomas Square named after him.
Kamehameha III proclaimed a 10-day holiday, and throughout his reign, July 31 was celebrated as La Ho'iho'i Ea or Sovereignty Restoration Day.
He also proclaimed the now famous motto, "Ua mau ke ea o ka `aina i ka pono," which means, "The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness."

The Koani Foundation awarded its seventh annual Hawaiian Kingdom Patriot Awards honoring two Hawaiian Kingdom patriots yesterday at Lā Ho`iho`i Ea at Thomas Square in Honolulu.
The award presentation took place as part of a daylong observance of La Ho`iho`i Ea, Hawaiian Sovereignty Restoration Day.
Lynette Cruz and the late Edith M. “Didi” Kwai are the 2019 honorees.
Hui Aloha `Aina O Ka Lei Maile Ali`i founder Lynette Cruz was honored in recognition of a lifetime of contributions to the cause of a Free Hawai'i and helping to promote Hawaiian Sovereignty and Independence. Lynette Cruz is being given the Living Patriot Award.
The late Edith M. Didi Kwai was honored posthumously as the playwright of “Ka Lei Maile Ali`i - The Queenʻs Women,” an historical and dramatic re-enactment depicting an event that took place on Sept. 16, 1897, when well over 300 Hawaiians gathered at the Salvation Army Hall in Hilo to protest the proposed annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom to the US.
“Lynetteʻs tireless dedication and profound love of our Queen, our Lahui, it's `aina and people continue to inspire many who follow in her endeavors,” states Koani Foundation director Al Ku`ahi Wong.
“Didiʻs brilliant creation of “Ka Lei Maile Ali`i - The Queenʻs Women” has moved and inspired countless others who have experienced the play to become “Aloha `Aina” - Hawaiian Kingdom patriots themselves.”
“We owe both Lynette and Didi our profound mahalo for their passion and lifetime dedication and both are examples of what it means to live oneʻs life as a Hawaiian Kingdom patriot,” added Wong.

The Koani Foundation awarded its sixth annual Hawaiian Kingdom Patriot Awards honoring two Hawaiian Kingdom patriots yesterday, Sunday, July 29th at Thomas Square in Honolulu.
The award presentation took place as part of a daylong observance of La Ho`iho`i Ea, Hawaiian Sovereignty Restoration Day.
Liko Martin and the late Dawn Wasson are the 2018 honorees.
Famed composer and singer Liko-o-Kalani Martin was honored in recognition of his years of composing and performing songs highlighting Hawaiian Kingdom patriotism, the Kingdomʻs history as well as itʻs continued existence. Liko Martin is being given the Living Patriot Award.
The late Dawn Kahalaomapuana Tautafa Kaaihue Keaweamahi Wasson was honored posthumously for her advocacy of protecting Hawai`iʻs people and lands.
“Likoʻs music and life continue to inspire countless others and reminds us all that the Hawaiian Kingdom is still very much alive today,” states Koani Foundation director Leon Siu.
“Aunty Dawnʻs passion and absolute love for her people as well as her tireless dedication to making Hawai`i a better place for all was amazing,” added Siu.
Both Liko Martin and Aunty Dawn Wasson are inspirational examples of what it means to live oneʻs life as a Hawaiian Kingdom patriot.

KAMEHAMEHA III - KAUIKEAOULI TO STAND TALL AT THOMAS SQUARE IN HONOLULU

Amid the dust and grime of a California foundry sits the likeness of King Kamehameha III, Kauikeaouli.
An unlikely place to find Hawai`i’s longest reigning monarch, but there, he is of king-sized proportion.
As part of the City’s plans to improve Thomas Square, Hawai`i’s oldest park, an artist was commissioned to sculpt a statue of Kamehameha III to commemorate the monarch’s historical connection to the area.
“It started with a call and we received over 80 applicants from all over the country,” Tory Laitila, the Registrar of Honolulu Mayor’s Office of Culture and Arts said.
Thomas Jay Warren, a sculptor from Oregon, was chosen to craft the $250,000 bronze statue.
“The total span of the project is going to 11 months, from the time I started enlarging, from the decision that was created by the commission, 11 months from that enlargement to 12 feet, to finishing the casting, to delivering and installing it in Honolulu,” Warren said.
Island News recently got a glimpse of the statue when Laitila traveled to Berkeley to check on the progress of the project.
Kauikeaouli will stand at 12-feet tall but laid in nearly two dozen newly cast pieces across the foundry that day. The characters - K III - can be seen etched onto his collar alongside a kalo. The monarch’s hair - short, wavy, and slightly side-swept.
A sole flag pole donning only the hae Hawai`i, or Hawaiian flag, will accompany Kauikeaouli upon a pedestal near the center of Thomas Square when the statue is installed.
The statue will be shipped to Honolulu in July ahead of La Ho`iho`i Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day.
“Restoration Day this year is the 175th anniversary of the event so there’ll be a very large commemoration event at the park,” Laitila said. “There are many people looking forward to actual restoration day this year as well as the dedication of the sculpture.”
La Ho`iho`i Ea began in 1843 under Kamehameha III after rogue agents of the British Crown seized control of the government by order of British Lord George Paulette.
During this time, all Hawaiian flags were lowered and burned. Months later, Queen Victoria sent Admiral Richard Thomas to Hawai`i to remove Paulette and reinstate the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Following the reinstatement of the Kingdom, a flag ceremony was held in Thomas Square where the Union Jack was lowered and the Hawaiian flag raised. This ceremony is where Kamehameha III spoke the popular proclamation, “Ua mau ke ea o ka ‘aina i ka pono,” loosely translated as “the sovereignty of Hawai`i is restored by righteousness.”
The park’s surrounding streets also acknowledge the Kingdom’s history with Britain. Beretania Street, on the mauka-side of the park, means Britain in the Hawaiian language and Victoria Street, on the Diamond Head side, pays tribute to Queen Victoria.
And though he’s been sculpting for over three decades, Warren is still moved by the opportunity to create memorials featuring persons of cultural significance. Those feelings resonated in the words he spoke of Kauikeaouli.
“He managed to get the Kingdom of Hawai`i back from the British without firing a single shot and that to me is an amazing piece of diplomacy,” Warren said. “I research my subjects and the history, I read about him and we could use more people in public service like he was for his people.”
