VOICES OF HAWAI`I & PACIFIC HEARD AT UNITED NATIONS

NEW YORK - Representatives of the Pacific Region including Hawai`i presented their views of the priorities for Indigenous Peoples in the Pacific Region, in a side event yesterday.

The panel discussion provided an opportunity for the voice of the peoples of the Pacific Islands to be heard.

Peter Emberson, of the Pacific Concerns Resource Centre based in Fiji stressed the importance of self-determination for the peoples in the region.

He reminded the audience of the commitments originally made for decolonization of the region, and the failure of the United Nations to live up to its original commitments.
