SEPTEMBER FREE HAWAII NEWS - IS CHIEF OF WAR A BREAKTHROUGH FOR HAWAIIANS?

Will Chief Of War Get Others To See Hawaii As An Independent Country? Plus How The UN Was Fooled Into Thinking Hawaii Is The 50th US State, Then Progress On Homes For Lahaina, Also How A Visitor Industry Would Be Very Different In A Hawaiian Kingdom And Kumu Hinaʻs Mana`o Explains Why Chief Of War Was Filmed In `Olelo Hawai`i.

The September 2025 “Free Hawaii News” debuting tonight, Friday, September 5th airs at 7 PM on `Olelo Television Channel 53 on O`ahu, on all neighbor islands and also at FreeHawaiiNews.com

“Jason Momoaʻs Chief Of War series airing on Apple TV is definitely a game changer. Itʻs already getting viewers everywhere to understand what kanaka maoli or Hawaiians went through during a time of vast change and upheaval. It showcases to the world that thereʻs an independent country called the Hawaiian Kingdom. We talk with Hawaiian educator and cultural specialist Kalehua Krug on the most important aspects of Chief Of War,” states Free Hawaii News co-host Leon Siu.

Also on the September Free Hawaii News co-host Leon Siu explains in his United Nations Update how the UN was fooled into thinking Hawaii is the fiftieth US state. “We have been educating UN members of Hawaiiʻs real history and how the claim that Hawaii became the fiftieth US state in 1959 was a sleight of hand. Itʻs been a real eye-opener for many and theyʻre now asking us how they can help correct this wrong,” reports Leon.

In her Kumu Hinaʻs Mana`o segment Free Hawaii News co-host Hinaleimoana Wong explains why Chief Of War was filmed in `Olelo Hawaii, then we go to Maui for an update on progress in rehousing Lahainaʻs residents & also how a tourist industry would be very different in a Hawaiian Kingdom.

Free Hawaii News presents Hawaiian or kanaka maoli perspectives on a broad range of issues and topics affecting the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific and the world.

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - AUGUST 2025

Chief of War and Hawaii History Month

Jason Momoaʻs series, Chief of War, is not only fascinating, exciting and entertaining, it has brought Hawaiian culture and history to the world’s attention as never before. The world is seeing Hawaii with new eyes — Kanaka eyes — giving new angles, new understanding, and perhaps new respect. People are beginning to learn about who we are and the profound social, cultural, historical and political dynamics that brought us to this place in time. The series will not only cause the world to view Hawaii in a different light, it will likely help to open minds to the prospect of a free Hawaii.

September is Hawaiian History Month. This designation was created several years ago by Hawaiian patriots as an extension of the annual celebration of Queen Liliuokalani’s birthday (September 2, 1838). It involves holding related informational and educational events to invite the public to delve deeper into Hawaii’s history, past, present and future.

The State of Hawaii officially added Hawaiian History Month to other significant Hawaiian Kingdom holidays now being observed by the State: Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day), Lā Kuʻokoʻa (Hawaii Independence Day), and of course the venerable, King Kamehameha Day.

This represents a significant shift from the formerly widely accepted but false narrative (that Hawaii is a State of the United States) to the growing realization that Hawaii is still a sovereign nation after all. With decades of scholarly work, persistent calls for justice, aloha ʻāina kuʻe actions, legal filings, diplomatic interventions and more, there has been a noticeable change in the attitude and demeanor of the Lāhui as Hawaii’s people awaken and prepare for the imminent return of their sovereign, independent nation.

Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole who was the lead sponsor of the recent bill stated, “By designating September as Hawaiian History month, the state affirms our collective responsibility to tell the full story of Hawaiʻi — rooted in Native Hawaiian leadership, resilience and cultural excellence.”

It was the telling of the “full story” that will inevitably lead to the realization that the current US State of Hawaii is an elaborate hoax, an impostor pretending to be the government for the Hawaiian Islands.

And it is the telling of our “full story”, whether through Hawaiian History Month or Chief of War or internet posts or through cultural roots or life experiences… that reminds us of who we are, where we came from, and the awesome story, place and kuleana for the future we inherited from our ancestors.

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - AUGUST 2025

No Celebration for Statehood

In 1959 President Dwight Eisenhower signed an official proclamation purportedly making Hawaiʻi the 50th state of the United States. There was dancing in the streets, parties, news coverage, speeches and fireworks at Iolani Palace.

But today, 66 years later, other than state and county workers having the day off, and a few perfunctory ‘sales’ by stores, there is no wide-spread celebration or even minimal acknowledgement of what should be the State’s most important holiday!

The last real celebration was in 2009, when Linda Lingle was Governor. She could not avoid it because it was the “50th anniversary of statehood”. But even then, the state-appointed commission to coordinate the jubilee celebration, fearing counter-demonstrations by angry Hawaiians to any large-scale celebrations, downplayed the event reducing it to a closed-door joint session of the legislature, a few TV and radio public-service announcements; a few speeches and proclamations; and an invitation-only conference at the convention center to “envision the next 50 years”.

Meanwhile, advocates for Hawaiʻi’s independence conducted numerous, highly public events exposing the “Fake State of Hawaii”, hijacking the State’s sorry events and generating news coverage about the State’s strange 50th Anniversary non-celebration in over 130 mentions in papers wire services and broadcasts around the world (including the New York Times, USA Today, Reuters, AP, and so forth).

The 2009 50th Anniversary Celebration was such a debacle that the State never mounted another official celebration.
Why were state leaders reluctant to make a big deal about celebrating statehood? Is the State suffering from “buyer’s remorse”? Or is it perhaps that the truth about the illegitimacy of Hawaiʻi’s statehood has come home to roost? And they know their days are numbered?

A basic principle of law, ex injura jus non oritur, means unjust acts cannot create lawful ones. This applies to Hawaiʻi. Since the initial seizure of the Hawaiian Islands in 1893 was unlawful, each successive government in the Hawaiian Islands, the “Republic of Hawaiʻi,” the “Territory of Hawaiʻi” and the present-day U.S. “State of Hawaiʻi,” were and still are, categorically unlawful.

This explains the reluctance to celebrate Statehood. The truth is people, both locally and in the international community, are realizing that Hawaii wasn’t adopted into the U.S. family; Hawaii was kidnapped!

No wonder the State is nervous.

AUGUST FREE HAWAII NEWS - HOW DID THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM HANDLE ITS IMMIGRATION PROBLEMS?

Whatʻs It Like To Bring Stolen Ancestral Bones Back To Hawaii? Also, Is Hawaii & Its People Ready For The US To Deoccupy Hawaii? Then, Why Hawaii Is Part Of Oceania & Not America. Who Really Owns The Land In Hawaii? And Kumu Hinaʻs Mana`o Says If You Thought You Knew What Hānai Means, Think Again.

The August 2025 “Free Hawaii News” debuting tonight Friday, August 1st airs at 7 PM on `Olelo Television Channel 53 on O`ahu, on all neighbor islands and also at http://FreeHawaiiNews.com

“The Hawaiian Kingdom had its own problems with immigration but handled them very differently than the US under the Trump administration is doing today. We interview Hawaiian historian Adam Keawe Manalo-Camp for our August Free Hawaii News and what he told us is both eye-opening and amazing. Adam shares with us some little known facts about immigrants to Hawaii in the late 1800ʻs and we think our viewers will be quite surprised at what he discovered,” states Free Hawaii News co-host Hinaleimoana Wong.

“We also talk with Mana Kaleilani Caceres, who recently travelled to Belfast, Northern Ireland with others to repatriate iwi kupuna or Hawaiian ancestral bones, taken by a grave robber almost 200 years ago, back home. Mana shares with us the emotional and lasting impact of this experience.”

Also on the August Free Hawaii News co-host Leon Siu interviews long time sovereignty activist Pōkā Laenui about whether Hawaii and its people are ready for a coming deoccupation of the Hawaiian Islands by the US. “We ask Pōkā what plans are already in place to effect a smooth transition from foreign US rule to self-rule and how it all will work,” reports Leon.

We also feature a segment on who really owns the land in Hawaii and why Hawaii is part of Oceania and not North America.

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - JULY 2025

Hawaiiʻs First National Holiday

On February 11, 1843 a British naval officer, Captain Lord George Paulet, arrived in Honolulu to investigate a land dispute complaint by Richard Charlton, the British Consul to Hawaii.

When negotiations with King Kamehameha III did not go his way, Paulet seized control of the Hawaiian Kingdom for the British Crown. Paulet did not know that three envoys from Hawaii — Timoteo Ha’alilio, William Richards and Sir George Simpson — were already in England negotiating with the United Kingdom to formally recognize the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign country. Upon learning of Paulet’s brazen seizure of Hawaii, the delegation filed a diplomatic protest with British authorities.

On July 26, 1843 British Admiral Richard Thomas, arrived in Honolulu to put an end to Paulet’s illegal occupation. On July 31 at a site now called, Thomas Square (in honor of the admiral) the British flag was lowered and the flag of Hawaii was raised acknowledging Hawai‘i’s sovereignty and restoring King Kamehameha III as the rightful ruler.

At a speech at Kawaiaha‘o Church later that day, King Kamehameha III declared, Ua mau ke eā o ka ‘āina i ka pono (The sovereignty of the land is perpetuated in righteousness). It became the official motto of the Hawaiian Kingdom and was such a good motto that even the fake Territory and State of Hawaii adopted it for their motto too.

King Kamehameha III declared July 31 to be celebrated as Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, Sovereignty Restoration Day in perpetuity. So, from 1843 to 1893, it was robustly celebrated throughout the Kingdom as a week-long national holiday marked by patriotic speeches and activities; music, crafts, games, food and community events.

But in 1893, Hawai‘i once again came under an illegal occupation, this time by greedy traitors and seditious foreigners backed by a ruthless U.S. minister with a fully armed force of U.S. sailors and marines.

The usurpers banned celebrations of Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, along with other national holidays such as Lā Ku‘oko’a, Hawaiiʻs Independence Day. Unlike the one that began in 1893, the illegal occupation of 1843 lasted, morphing into the fake “Territory of Hawaii”, then todayʻs fake “State of Hawaii”.

In 1985. however, Hawaiian national scholar, patriot and activist Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell and friends revived Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea to assert and celebrate Hawaii’s sovereignty, despite the nearly century-long U.S. occupation. Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea is now celebrated by a huge gathering at Thomas Square in Honolulu, and by numerous gatherings and activities throughout the islands.

This year, even the “State of Hawaii”, joins inrecognizing Lā Ho‘iho‘i Eā and Lā Ku‘oko’a, as Hawaiian Kingdom national holidays. Another sign that a Free Hawaii is getting close…

The July 2025 “Free Hawaii News” debuting this Friday night July, 4th airs at 7 PM on `Olelo Television Channel 53 on O`ahu, on all neighbor islands and also at FreeHawaiiNews.com

“Recently US president Donald Trump announced he intends to fast track deep sea mining to acquire rare earth minerals. Much of that deep sea mining will take place in Pacific Ocean waters. For Pacific island nations dependent on fishing, tourism and renewable energy, the consequences of deep sea mining are of great concern,” states Free Hawaii News co-host Hinaleimoana Wong.

“We also visit a giant umeke or bowl created by Hawaiian artist Meleanna Aluli Meyer. This giant umeke la`au was created as both art and also to confront historical trauma bringing cultural healing. The public is invited to walk inside and hear the names of thousands of Hawaiians who signed the Kū`ē Petitions in 1897 protesting the illegal annexation of the Hawaiian Islands.”

Free Hawaii News co-host Leon Siu reports from the United Nations in Geneva Switzerland. “Iʻm there to participate in sessions of the UN Human Rights Council and also to meet with foreign ambassadors and leaders about the legal status of Hawaii. KE AUPUNI UPDATE - JUNE 2025

Adversarial or Diplomatic

The UN has 4 headquarters. The two main ones are in New York and Geneva, Switzerland. The other two are in Vienna, Austria and Nairobi, Kenya.

The biggest UN facility by far is the one that sprawls over 114 acres in Geneva, Switzerland, which is where I visit several times a year to maintain advocacy for Hawaii’s independence. I also make trips to the iconic New York headquarters three or four times a year. This Ke Aupuni Update is coming to you from Geneva where I am currently winding down from another visit to the UN Human Rights Council at the Palais des Nations.

People in Hawaii often confuse the UN in Geneva, with the international courts at The Hague. They are not the same. The Hague is a city in the Netherlands and is the home to three of the most prominent international courts: the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), and the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The famous Lance Larsen v. the Hawaiian Kingdom case took place in the year 2000 there at the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

Conflating Geneva and the Hague not only reveals confusion over the venue for settling international disputes, it reveals confusion over the approach for settling disputes: legal or political. Or another way of putting it, adversarial or diplomatic.

Because we have been focused so much on the legal wrongs in what happened to us in Hawaii, we tend to see everything in legal terms. The misuse of laws to take our lands, our identity, and abuses to our rights and our freedoms keep us fixated on looking at legal mechanisms and remedies.

Therefore, many think that our going to the UN is like going to a court. It is not. The difference between the legal and diplomatic approach.

In a court of law, legal arguments are presented and judges or other persons in authority make decisions based on how good your legal arguments are. The legal approach creates an adversarial setting, where legal experts battle each other about points of law, with one side eventually beating the other side, winning a judgement in its favor.

But diplomacy is not an argument, it’s a negotiation. It works best by making friends and respecting one another. By seeking how things can be worked out. By bringing goodwill and friendliness into the picture to resolve a problem together. It is more on the line of ho’oponopno, putting things into proper balance.

The legal approach is like making war. The diplomatic approach is making Aloha. That is definitely more our style.

Aloha ʻĀina —
