In 1897 and 1898, 99% of all Native Hawaiians, as well as non-natives throughout all the islands, signed a petition to U.S. Congress asking that the U.S. not annex Hawai`i.
This petition was rediscovered in the U.S. Archives only within the past 10 years, and today's Hawaiians are proud to find the signatures of their ancestors on this document.
