CURIOUS ABOUT HOW HAWAI`I SUPPOSEDLY BECAME A US STATE ?

The United States acquired Hawai`i through force.

Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawai`i's last Queen, was deposed on Jan. 17, 1893, by a group of American businessmen supported by the United States Navy and Marine Corps and diplomatic representatives.

Sovereignty of Hawai`i was allegedly transferred to the U.S. on Aug. 12, 1898 during ceremonies at Iolani Palace in Honolulu, on the island of O`ahu.

Hawai`i allegedly became a U.S. territory in 1900.

On Nov. 23, 1993, The United States apologized for illegally overthrowing the Kingdom of Hawai`i, and recognized the inherent sovereignty and right of self-determination of native islanders.

Needless to say, a lot of shady events took place between Jan. 17,1893 and Aug. 21, 1959.

Hawaiian sovereignty is a hot issue in the islands to this day and likely will be for as long as the United States flag flies over Hawai`i.

ARIZONA PRISON HOUSES HAWAIIAN INMATES ONLY

Inmates Shipped To New Private Facility

Corrections Corporation of America opened its newest prison in Arizona in Eloy on Tuesday. The $95 million facility is exclusively for Hawaiian inmates.

"Because Hawai`i has bed space for a limited number of offenders on the island and the cost of land in Hawai`i to build a facility is outrageous," said warden Daren Swenson.

The Saguaro Correctional Facility will hold almost 1900 medium security inmates from Hawai`i. The private prison will be geared to Hawaiian culture.

"I don't see it as making them comfortable. The key word is rehabilitation," said Andre Perez, a Native Hawaiian cultural advisor for CCA.

"We want to change the way they think," Perez said.

Along with education and counseling, maintaining Hawaiian holidays and ceremonies is also expected to help those returning to society.

The first inmates are expected by the end of the week, and the facility should be at full capacity by the end of the year.

ALOHA MAI KAKOU!
WELCOME IF YOU'RE VISITING FREEHAWAII.INFO FOR THE FIRST TIME!

Free Hawai`i
means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent nation status, as it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.

In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.

DID YOU KNOW
-

98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow!

Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai`i is in Hawaiian hands.

Over 60% today is in non-Hawaiian hands!

A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai`i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians!

Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai`i.

Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai`i today.

Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators compared to any ethnic group in the US.

Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile compared to any ethnic group in the US.

Descendants of the Hawaiian Nation want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.

RESTRAINING ORDER FILED TO PROTECT HAWAIIAN RELIGIOUS SITE

West Hawai`i Today - Tuesday, June 26, 2007

The Ahuena Heiau preservation group, Kulana Huli Honua, has filed suit against the new owners of the King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel and the state.

Robert Kim, attorney for the group, filed a civil action late Friday requesting a temporary restraining order to keep the hotel's new owners from evicting the group until a hearing concerning a preliminary injunction can be held to clarify the situation regarding Mikahala Roy's and Kulana Huli Honua's stewardship of the heiau (Hawaiian place of worship.)

Mikahala Roy is one of the authors of the Ho`ala Statement: Call for Congressional Hearings on the Akaka Bill in Hawai`i Now!

"We are taking this action to prevent an injustice by marginalizing the authentic leadership of the heiau," said Kim, referring to Mikahala Roy, the heiau's kahu, or priest.

"We are taking this position because they haven't articulated it but they are seeking to terminate the relationship, we do not know whether they are picking or choosing which portions of the agreement to agree with...."

...Although the hotel is keeping Ahuena Heiau Inc. to maintain the heiau, Kim claimed the situation will have adverse effects on the heiau and the community.

"What this creates is a cultural war between the Hawaiian community and the business developers who come into our town and take this kind of action," said Kim.

"It's going to hurt everybody, it's going to create bad feelings on both sides."

HAWAI`I UNDER US MILITARY OCCUPATION

By Zoe Kenny -
23 June 2007

“Not many people realise that Hawaiians feel that our country is under an occupation”, Terrilee Kekoolani, an organiser with the DMZ Hawai`i activist coalition, told a public meeting of 20 people on June 19.

She was in Australia to take part in protests against the US-Australian Talisman Sabre war games in Queensland.

Kekoolani explained that in 1893 the US organised a coup against the Hawaiian government of Queen Liliuokalani. This paved the way for a full-scale US military occupation in 1898.

Today, there 44,000 active duty US personnel in Hawai`i, who along with their 65,000 dependents and 100,000 retired military personnel, make up 17% of the islands’ population.

Kekoolani said that native Hawaiians, 20% of the population, have become a "maginalised minority withinour own land."

ARTISTIC VOYAGE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

We hoped our viewers would like our new show with Sam Ka`ai, but we hardly expected the kind of overwhelming response we’ve received.

Well, you’re welcome - and there’s more to come.

This week we continue with another brand new show in our fourth season of Voice Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

At the 15th annual Celebration of the Arts in Kapalua, Maui, celebrating the people, arts and culture of Hawai`i, one of the participants we interviewed was none other than Joanne Kahanamoku Sterling.

At first glance, Joanne may not impress you as your average person – over achiever, highly accomplished, and most recently designated “Living Treasure” by the Bishop Museum.

And yet Joanne is quite like the rest of us – she just goes for what she wants.

In fact, she’s the perfect role model for us all.

She’s one more Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiian) who has distinguished herself in ways that you can too.

See for yourself this week right here on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

MONDAY, June 25th At 7:00 PM & FRIDAY, June 29th At 5:30 PMHawai`i Island – Na Leo, Channel 53

“Coming Full Circle – A Visit With Sam Ka`ai”

A Kanaka Maoli practitioner extraordinaire, Sam Ka`ai is a Pacific voyager and cultural ambassador, who’s devotion to keeping alive the ancient ways of old Hawai`i is truly beyond compare.

From the perpetuation of lua, the ancient Hawaiian fighting art, to ceremonial protocol, Sam is also a creator of world-class stone and wood weaponry, as well as amazing adornments of shell and natural fibers.

Above all, Sam Ka`ai is a master orator, sharing timeless Polynesian legends, myth and mana`o (thoughts) through vivid imagery and dramatic, spellbinding story telling.

Sam is one of those rare individuals who, when in his presence, time seems to stand still and the ancestors come forth and speak.

It’s then you realize his knowledge is of the ages.

If you’ve not witnessed Sam in person, don’t miss this one-of-a-kind interview as he shares with us stories of his early childhood on Maui, the changing social dynamics that molded him into the amazing person he is today and most of all why the ways of old Hawai`i are the very keys for the future for all of us today.

SATURDAY, June 30th At 8:00 PM O`ahu - ‘Olelo, Channel 53
“Artistic Voyage – A Visit With Joanne Kahanamoku Sterling”

Joanne Kahanamoku has been an integral part of the Hawaiian Renaissance from the start.

Born and raised during her childhood years in Tahiti, she traveled to join her renowned Kanaka Maoli `ohana (family) in Hawai`i as a young person.

Always independent and impetuous, Joanne has pushed the envelope in every phase of her life distinguishing herself in challenging physical activities, including surfing and swimming.

She joined the Hokule`a project during the design phase and later became one of the first wahine (woman) to crew in the early voyages.

Currently she focuses her energy and talent in Lei Hulu, the traditional feather arts, adapting them into contemporary expressions of her own creativity.

Don’t miss our visit with this remarkable wahine Kanaka Hawai`i Maoli. Recently recognized by her peers and the Bishop Museum as a Living Treasure, Joanne inspires us to see what we can all become if we just follow our passion and vision.

CLAIMS OF AKAKA BILL SUPPORT DECEPTIVE

Office Of Hawaiian Affairs Ignores Polls Of Overwhelming Opposition To Federal Recognition

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) continues its deceptive claims of overwhelming popular support for the Akaka Bill in its latest ad in the 6/17 Honolulu Advertiser.

OHA admits that a much broader survey, with over 20,000 participants found overwhelming opposition to the Akaka bill (67%) but accuses that survey of being biased.

OHA conveniently fails to mention the negative results of the 2003 survey which it commissioned and paid for, and in which it helped design the questions.

And here's the results of a Honolulu Star-Bulletin Poll in 2005 -

"The US Senate Committee On Indian Affairs has approved the Akaka bill for a vote by the full Senate. Would you like to see the Akaka bill become law?"

Yes - 24.9%

NO - 74.3%

HAWAI`I LAND BUREAU UNDER INVESTIGATION - AGAIN

Hawaiians Victim Of Agency Supposed To Protect Them

Associated Press June 21, 2007

HONOLULU — Lawmakers opened an investigation into Hawai`i's troubled land bureau amid accusations that it fails to protect property records, shows favoritism and is poorly run.

"We want an effective and functioning Bureau of Conveyances, and that's not what we have now," Sen. Jill Tokuda, D-Kane`ohe-Kailua, chairwoman of the investigative committee said on Wednesday.

"There have been long-standing problems. This is not a new situation.

The probe into the bureau stems from evidence from this spring's Senate hearings that led to the ouster of former Department of Land and Natural Resources chairman Peter Young.

DLNR oversees the Bureau of Conveyances, and senators said its mismanagement reflected poorly on Young.

Two other investigations into the bureau are already ongoing - the attorney general is looking at potential breaches of computer security, and the state Ethics Commission is evaluating the propriety of gifts given to bureau employees.

Allegations surrounding the Bureau of Conveyances also include claims that a private title company was allowed to have a computer operating at the bureau and that documents may have been tampered with.

HAWAIIANS NOT GETTING THEIR FAIR SHARE?

"Indigenous View Will Eventually Dominate," Say One Hawaiian

Honolulu Advertiser June 19, 2007

To believe that indigenous peoples will someday all become westernized is another form of Western imperialism.

Anywhere Western colonization occurs, indigenous peoples lose control of their natural resources. Once they lose control it is easy for predatory colonizers to promote their hegemony.

Hawaiians, like most indigenous people, have a sophisticated cosmogony based upon the fact that all living organisms are relative and no living organism is superior to the other.

On the other hand, contemporary Western cosmogony is based on Christian ideology — one superior white God, fused with capitalism, sustained by the exploitation of the natural resources of the Earth and the universe.

Sooner or later we must get back to the reality of life and begin to co-exist with the other species on Earth and the universe.

Until that time comes, it will be an uphill battle for survival for all Hawaiians and all indigenous people.

The United States and Western colonization will eventually become just another chapter in Hawaiian mythology.

FOURTH SEASON DEBUTS OF VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

Mahalo to all for your mana`o `olu`olu (kind thoughts) and feedback this last week on the launch of VoicesOfTruthTV.com, our brand new website where you may watch Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`I’s Future 24/7.

We’re glad you like it – we’ll be adding more shows all the time.

This week, we launch our fourth season of Voice Of Truth and we’re doing it with some brand new shows celebrating the people, arts and culture of Hawai`i.

Voices Of Truth attended the 15th annual Celebration of the Arts in Kapalua, Maui in April, and show co-host Kai`opua Fyfe interviewed some amazing individuals indeed.

We’ll be bringing them to you over the coming weeks, but we wanted to start off with a bang in debuting our visit with Sam Ka`ai.

If you’ve been lucky enough to experience Sam in person, you already know what we’re talking about. If you haven’t, you’re in for a real treat.

It’s not an overstatement at all to say Sam is Hawai`i.

Through his unique skills, Sam’s takes his listener to any time and place in history in Hawai`i and Polynesia – and you feel like you’re right there.

Sam’s the kind of person who has roomfuls of listeners on the edge of their seats as he tells stories and events of Hawai`i that occurred hundreds and even thousands of years ago.

And since anyone who has heard Sam always wants more, that’s exactly where we start this week on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

MONDAY, June 18th At 7:00 PM & FRIDAY, June 22nd At 5:30 PMHawai`i Island – Na Leo, Channel 53
“A Journey Of Occupation – A Visit With Andre Perez”

What would it be like to be in the US military for eight years, then find yourself living on the streets?

That’s what happened to Andre Perez who went from one extreme to another.

And from the streets, he found his way into the Kaho`olawe occupation, which, by his own accounts, was a life-changing experience.

It had to be because Andre’s never at a loss for words when it comes to defending his people that led him to the next chapter of his life.

Currently the spokesperson for Hui Pu, as well as a Halau Lokahi teacher, Andre recently found himself in the middle of yet another occupation – the dramatic taking of `Iolani Palace by Hui Pu to publicly oppose the Akaka bill.

As we look to the future of Hawai`i, we’re sure you’ll agree with us that Andre and others like him will play a prominent role in it.

Don’t miss our visit with Andre who’s part of the new generation of warriors who are as fearless as they are articulate. You’ll see why he’s a role model for the `opio (youth)of today as well as a leader for tomorrow.

STANDING UP FOR FOR HAWAIIAN RIGHTS

"The People On The Sidewalk" Protest Actions Of Grassroots Institute In Honolulu

Here Is What They Had To Say -

"Aloha Tenants of the Interstate Building.

This morning, members of the Hawaiian community are gathering outside your workplaces for a single purpose - to shine a light on an organization housed here that is working to undermine and erode Native Hawaiian rights...

...The Grassroot Institute, both corporately and via its members and affiliates, is part of a reactionary movement to expropriate the collective inheritance of the indigneous peoples of Hawai`i.

In so doing, they have misused the grand language of the U.S. civil rights movement to facilitate their goals, while continuing the deplorable tradition of the jingoists, the yellow journalists, and the annexationists of the 19th century.

...It’s our sincere hope that our presence here today does not hinder your daily business. Our intent is to educate the general public, and to defend our heritage.

Thank you for your patience."

TOMORROW'S THE DAY! - JOIN SUPPORTERS OF A FREE HAWAI`I MARCHING IN PROTEST OVER STOLEN LANDS & SOVEREIGNTY

US To Try Hawaiian Nationals For Trespass On Their Own Lands

A show of support is being called for as three Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) Nationals are brought to trial because of attempted Hawaiian culture practice.

Henry Noa, Nelson Armitage and Russell Kahookele will stand trial in Maui District Court 8 AM tomorrow, Friday June 15th on charges by the so-called "state" of Hawai`i on criminal trespass and violation of closed waters on and around the island of Kaho`olawe.

In 1993, the entire island of Kaho`olawe was returned through a trust to the Hawaiian people.

Supporters are asked to gather to protest this gross injustice at Wells Street Park in Wailuku, Maui at 7 AM.

The US federal government has continually recognized in their own laws and legal documents the Kingdom of Hawai`i as the legitimate sovereignty of the Hawaiian islands for over 114 years, and whose political authority was illegally suspended in 1895 in an act of war by the US against the Hawaiian Nation.

HAWAIIANS NOT GETTING THEIR FAIR SHARE

Honolulu Adertiser - By Jerry Burris - June 8, 2007

...The poverty rate for Hawaiians is higher than the overall state average. But the "staggering" figure is that, among the people considered to be in poverty in the Islands, fully 27 percent of them are Native Hawaiians.

...nearly a third of all people who earn less than $10,000 are Native Hawaiians versus about 19 percent for non-Native Hawaiians. It works the other way as well: A smaller percentage of those in the high-income group are Native Hawaiians as compared with non-Hawaiians.

...The only category in which Hawaiians out-earn the rest of the state is in public assistance.

Now, there are lots of reasons for these discrepancies, including the fact that Hawaiians tend to be younger (less wealth accumulation), come from larger families, are somewhat less-well-educated and have fewer people in high-income fields.

...Is that the answer? Who knows? But what seems to be obvious is that the answer to Hawaiian poverty and lack of financial success is not going to come from pretending it does not exist.

“An Hawaiian Philosopher – A Visit With Kaleikoa Kaeo”

Rarely have we come across anyone as brilliant as Kaleikoa Kaeo.

An instructor at Maui Community College with a master’s degree in Hawaiian studies and political science, Kaleikoa is literally a modern day Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiian) visionary.

An articulate philosopher for a Free Hawai`i, Kaleikoa speaks movingly of the importance of our relationship to the `aina (land,) why our cultural qualities must come from the inside out and what he sees for Hawai`i’s future.

We feel sure you’ll agree with us Kaleikoa is a prime example of the brilliance of our younger and up and coming Kanakas.

So sit your entire `ohana (family) down and experience this highly inspirational role model and hear why he says we need to be watchful in everything we do so that we never fall into the trap of becoming no better than those who currently oppress us.

“Even They Can See It – A Visit With Maui Solomon & Rebecca Tsosie”

Maui Solomon, a Maori from Aotearoa (New Zealand,) and Rebecca Tsosie, a member of the Yaqui tribe from southern Arizona, come from two different worlds geographically apart.

Yet, they have much in common.

Successful attorneys, both Maui and Rebecca focus their legal practice in helping to protect their own native people.

And both have seen the devastating effects of federal recognition in their own lands.

“Don’t let it happen here,” is the message they brought to us loud and clear.

By describing what did happen to their people after federal recognition, we have an opportunity to see both the “before and after” picture. And it’s one they tell us it’s a mistake we don’t ever want to make.

You’ll be as hooked as we were as they describe the very same slick arguments and false promises their own politicians put forth to sell federal recognition as those we’ve heard in Hawai`i. And you'll be equally as disgusted when you hear the results. Compelling as they are convincing, their message is one all of us need to hear.

Voices Of Truth interviews those creating a better future for Hawai`i to discover what made them go from armchair observers to active participants in the hopes of inspiring viewers to do the same.

HAWAIIAN ASKS "WHY NO HEARINGS IN HAWAI`I ON AKAKA BILL?"

Letter To Editor In OHA Newspaper Takes Office Of Hawaiian Affairs To Task

"Regarding the Akaka Bill, I am still very confused about a couple of points.

It’s ironic that both Senator Akaka and OHA have never conducted hearings among anaka maoli (native Hawaiians) to get input as to which form of “self-government” they would prefer to have.

How contradictory is it to the whole concept of “self-determination” that both Akaka and OHA would be moving full speed ahead with S. 310 without ever getting feedback first from the people they both purport to serve?

What could OHA possibly have to lose by conducting hearings on all the islands to get input from its constituents about what form of self-governance they would want?

(OHA Trustee Chairperson) Haunani Apoliona invoked the name of Lili`u herself in justifying federal recognition, even speculating that the Akaka Bill would fulfill the “queen’s dream” if it became a reality.

Well, since we’re speculating, isn’t it more reasonable to think the queen would view the Akaka Bill as another form of servitude and acquiescence to an admitted usurper?

Haunani, do you really believe that Lili`u would want kanaka maoli to continue to serve the same invading forces that have dispossessed them of their precious `aina (land?)

A`ole! (NO!")

SUPPORTERS OF A FREE HAWAI`I TO MARCH IN PROTEST OVER STOLEN LANDS & SOVEREIGNTY

US To Try Hawaiian Nationals For Trespass On Their Own Lands

A show of support is being called for as three Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) Nationals are brought to trial because of attempted Hawaiian culture practice.

Henry Noa, Nelson Armitage and Russell Kahookele will stand trial in Maui District Court 8 AM on Friday, June 15th on charges by the so-called "state" of Hawai`i on criminal trespass and violation of closed waters on and around the island of Kaho`olawe.

U.S. - DEOCCUPY HAWAI`I NOW

The hoax and myth promulgated by the US for over 113 years has been now fully exposed by the mainstream media through the publication of Stephen Kinzer's book, "Overthrow - America's Century Of Regime Change From Hawai`i To Iraq."

Covert and overt actions by the U.S. in Hawai`i have also been uncovered and deemed to be in violation of both U.S. domestic and international laws.

Even the silly Akaka bill, the legislation that would have turned ethnic Hawaiians into "indians," was seen for what it was - more charade and land grabs, and was soundly defeated.

Isn't it time to end the charade and realize the facts ?

The Occupation Of Hawai`i Is A Social Wrong That Should Not Be Managed - It Should Be Ended.

HOW THE U.S. STOLE HAWAI`I

By
Monica Moorehead - Worker's World - May 26, 2007 8:01 AM

The Hawai`i Solidarity Committee and the International Action Center sponsored a May 21 forum featuring Kai`opua Fyfe and `Ehu Kekahu Cardwell representing the Hawaiian Independence Movement at the Solidarity Center in New York City.

Speakers explained how the U.S. government illegally annexed Hawai`i back in 1898.

Five years earlier, in 1893, the U.S. overthrew the reigning monarch of Hawai`i, Queen Lili`uokalani, on behalf of big business interests like Dole that wanted to super-exploit Hawai`i's resources, especially sugar cane.

This colonial domination laid the basis for the U.S. making Hawai`i the 50th state in 1959.

The film, "We Are Who We Are: From Resistance to Affirmation," presented archival photos and footage of the legal and historic background to the annexation of Hawai'` and how the current independence movement, led by Indigenous people, is carrying out a struggle for self-determination.

“History Beneath Our Feet – A Visit With Dr. Baron Ching”

Hawaiian history hooks Baron Ching, a doctor of internal medicine by training.

With not a drop of Hawaiian blood in him, Baron is nevertheless both a direct descendant of a Hawaiian Kingdom national and an expert in the history of Hawai`i’s illegal overthrow.

We met up with Baron at Thomas Square in Honolulu during the annual Ka La Ho`iho`i Ea, or Sovereignty Restoration Day ceremonies.

He not only recounts events that occurred with the British leading up to Hawai`i’s sovereignty being temporarily taken, but he also reveals the fascinating things that happened at the very place we were standing!

Movingly, he tells of his Chinese great grandfather, one of many non-Hawaiians who came to `Iolani Palace at the time of the US overthrow, arriving with his weapons, ready to defend the Queen.

Don’t miss our visit with Baron, one of those rare individuals who make history come alive. And we promise you’ll be as captivated as we were when Baron describes the day he found his great grandfather’s signature on the Ku`e Petitions.

Voices Of Truth interviews those creating a better future for Hawai`i to discover what made them go from armchair observers to active participants in the hopes of inspiring viewers to do the same.

Those not in Hawai`i wishing to view the series may do so by visiting http://www.olelo.org and then clicking “NAT- Channel 53.” A screen should then display allowing you to see the show via live streaming.

Please refer to the ‘Olelo television programming notes above for segment times and titles.

INTERNATIONALY REKNOWN LEGAL SCHOLAR COMMENTS ON HAWAI`I

Professor Anthony Boyle Of University Of Illinois Says Hawai`i Was Stolen -

"Technically, legally,
Hawai`i is not a case of "secession" from the United States.

Rather, the
US never had valid title to the Kingdom of Hawai`i to begin with.

The US
illegally destroyed the Kingdom of Hawai`i, stole all of its land, and illegally incorporated its people against their wishes.

So this is like
the Soviet Union's illegal annexation and occupation of Lithuania....

...The USSR left Lithuania. Someday America shall leave
Hawai`i."
