There were many laws governing ancient Hawai`i, but none more significant than Kanawai Mamala Hoe, or Law Of The Splintered Paddle, decreed by Kamehameha I. So when peacemaker and activist Laulani Teale recently had a banner commemorating Kanawai Mamala Hoe confiscated by local authorities at a De-Occupy Honolulu encampment, she naturally wanted it back. When attempts to meet with the mayor resulted in her arrest, she only became more determined.
