UN Peacemaker Awards One Of Most Significant International Recognitions

Hawaiian Kingdom Foreign Minister and 2017 Nobel Peace Prize nominee His Excellency Leon Kaulahao Siu has been chosen to receive the Decree of Consecration Diploma and Gold Medal “UN Peacemaker Sergio Vieira de Mello” award.

These awards from the International Parliament for Safety and Peace (IPSP) are of the largest and most significant awards offered by an international body.

Previous recipients of awards from the IPSP include Mikhail Gorbachev and Nelson Mandela.

"I am deeply honored to receive these awards from the International Parliament for Safety and Peace. It helps to underscore the valuable role that the Hawaiian Kingdom has played and can continue to play in international matters,” states H. E. Leon Kaulahao Siu.

“With this award, the Hawaiian Kingdom is moving forward with Aloha. It is what we do best.”

The presentation of this award is to coincide with the annual International Day Of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The awards, sanctioned by the Brazilian government, are an initiative of the Palermo, Italy based International Parliament for Safety and Peace.

The Hawaiian Kingdomʻs relationship with Brazil goes back to the time of a royal visit in 1824 by Liholiho, Kamehameha II to Rio de Janeiro to celebrate a then newly independent Brazil.

The Gold Medal “UN Peacemaker Sergio Vieira de Mello” award was established in 2004 to honor Sergio Vieira de Mello, the Brazilian ambassador to the United Nations and Special UN Representative of the Secretary General in Iraq, tragically killed in August 2003.
