KE AUPUNI UPDATE - OCTOBER 2025

What are we doing at the UN?

I've been traveling for the past seven weeks. First, I attended the 54th Pacific Islands Forum in Honiara, Solomon Islands; then the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland; then the opening of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, then the Native Hawaiian Convention in Tulalip, Washington State. Then I headed back to the Pacific to attend the Polynesian Leaders Group in Nuku’alofa, the Kingdom of Tonga. And now I’m headed back to the UN in New York City.

Because so much of my work is at the United Nations, people often assume that we are trying to join the UN. Just to make it clear. We are NOT advocating for and HAVE NEVER advocated for Hawaii to join the UN. That is something that will have to be decided by the independent Hawaiian nation once it is reinstated and reactivated.

ALSO... to be clear... although I am personally involved with helping other peoples and nations with decolonization, the Hawaiian Kingdom's situation is very different from them, and our path does not lie with the UN’s decolonization process. So, we are not trying to join the UN, and we are not trying to utilize the UN's Decolonization process.

WHAT WE ARE DOING is working to overcome two gross errors made by the UN General Assembly that made Hawaii captive to the US. FIRST, in 1946 when the UN bought into the hoax that Hawaii was a Territory of the US and eligible for decolonization. SECOND in 1959 when the UN bought into the hoax that Hawaii had been decolonized and became a US “State”.

That means, since 1946, the UN has been complicit in the suppression of the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign State; the destruction of Hawaiian nationality; the forced imposition of US citizenship; the displacement and impoverishment of the Hawaiian people; the pillaging of lands and resources; the infliction of foreign economic, social and cultural systems; and turning a peaceful, neutral country into a menacing military stronghold, placing the people of Hawaii in danger of annihilation by enemies of the US.

Although this was probably not the UN’s intent as it is totally contrary to the primary tenets of the UN Charter, nevertheless, by failing to do its due diligence regarding the improper plebiscite and consequent incorporation of Hawaii as state of the US in 1959, the UN became complicit in the US’ illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Islands.

The UN’s acceptance of the United States’ claim that Hawaii became a State of the US, constitutes an internationally recognized settlement of the political status of the Hawaiian Islands. This “political settlement” repeatedly blocks (as we have experienced) all legal challenges of obvious illegal acts by the US, such as the illegal overthrow of 1893, the illegal annexation of 1898 and the illegal incorporation of Hawaii as “The 50th State” in 1959.

So, what we’ve been doing at the UN is working to remove that “political settlement” roadblock by getting the General Assembly to the point of admitting that, ‘Oops, we made a mistake’, and rescinding its validations of the US hoax.

The Hawaiian Kingdom is calling upon the United Nations, its Member States, and the rest of the international community to stop enabling the United States’ illegal occupation of the Hawaiian Islands by disavowing recognition of the US “State of Hawaii” as a legitimate entity and to recognize the continuity of the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign, independent, peaceful, neutral country. Thus, Hawaii can return to normalizing and resuming its relationships to the nations of the world.
