Kamehameha `Ekahi

June 11 is one of our great national holidays when we honor Kamehameha the Great, the founder of our country. He was truly an extraordinary man; from a child hidden since birth, to an antagonist-bully, to warrior, chief, conqueror, unifier, statesman, law-giver, peace-maker, diplomat, trade negotiator, the undisputed king (moʻi) of the Hawaiian Islands.

Kamehameha V, on December 22, 1871, proclaimed June 11 as King Kamehameha I Day, a perpetual holiday in the Kingdom to honor his grandfather, Kamehameha I. The first observance of the holiday took place the following year. Celebrations of King Kamehameha Day featured parades with elaborate floats and marchers from many Hawaiian and ethnic organizations; concerts, carnivals and fairs, foot races, horse races and other competitions. It was such a profound holiday that it continued unabated even through the “Territory of Hawaii” to the present as a holiday of the “State of Hawaii”.

His dying words, “E ʻoni wale no ʻoukou i kuʻu pono ʻaʻole pau.” — “Endless is the good that I have given you.” can also mean, "I have given you my best, but the work is not done." It is our perpetual kuleana as lāhui — our calling (and responsibility) as a nation — to continue to build upon and improve upon what he started.

Sign these petitions…

Rename McKinley High School and remove the McKinley statue! They told us we were adopted but then we found out we had been kidnapped! To honor the abductor as if he’s a hero is creepy and bizarre. Sign this online petition NOW! Tell everyone you know to sign it too! - TinyURL.com/AlohaOeMckinley

Let Hawaii Have an Olympic Team! Surfing has been added to the Olympic Games, but Hawaii is not being allowed to participate as a nation. That means Hawaii’s surfers will be forced to surf for the USA instead of for Hawaii, like they normally do. We are working to change that. Sign the Hawaii in the Olympics petition NOW! Tell everyone you know to sign it too! - Change.org/p/the-international-olympic-committee-let-hawaii-have-an-olympic-team
