MOTHER NATURE SAYS "NO" TO SUPERFERRY

Waves from 20 to 30 feet slammed against the breakwater at Maui's port, causing some lines that secure the Superferry barge to come loose.

Lines securing NCL's Pride of America cruise ship snapped, causing the vessel to cut short its Maui port call and seek safety in the open ocean.

The Coast Guard will be "keeping a close eye" on state and Superferry actions to move and realign the barge, said Lt. John Titchen. The Coast Guard has the authority to decide whether ferry operations at Kahului Harbor can be conducted safely.

Surfers said they were concerned about a security zone that will keep them out of the water because of the Superferry.

The Coast Guard has established security zones that will be in effect an hour before the Superferry arrives at 10:15 a.m. until 10 minutes after its departure at 11:15 a.m. during regular commercial service.

"We're just here to surf. We don't care about no Superferry," said Victor Victorino, a 47-year-old Paia resident.
