KAHULUI HARBOR CRISIS PITS PASSENGER SHIPS AGAINST HAWAIIAN CULTURE

Sign Waving Protest On Maui This Saturday 10 AM

Increases in cruise ship stays at Pier 1 and the addition of the Superferry to Pier 2 has precipitated a crisis in Maui's only deep water harbor.

With almost 80% of all food and goods coming in through Kahului Harbor, the Department of Transportation has responded by proposing a new Pier 5 for the cruise ships and Superferry on the inner west side of the harbor.

Save Kahului Harbor and Surfrider Foundation are sponsoring an informational sign waving this Saturday, February 2nd from 10 AM to 1 PM on Ka`ahumanu near the canoe hale to protest.

Paddlers and Surfers say the proposal will wipe out the Kahului Harbor surf break and the canoe race course.

The draft Environmental Impact Statment, while admitting this, claims no significant impact on Hawaiian cultural practices.

Save Kahului Harbor, which has been lobbying for procedural changes that give freight priority over passenger ships advocates removing passenger ships entirely to solve the freight crisis.

"Removing passenger ships from Kahului Harbor gives us the breathing room to plan an outward expansion of the harbor and to obtain federal funds," states
Save Kahului Harbor spokesperson, Karen Chun.

"We believe building inward is short-sighted and will create unsafe conditions in our already tight turning basin as well as damaging culture and recreation that has existed here for a thousand years."

Sign waving Saturday will be followed by a potluck and strategy meeting.

According to Chun, "Our use of Kahului Bay is on the line. Who do we kick out of Kahului Harbor? Us or the cruise ships?

"If you favor Hawaiian culture over cruise ships, then we hope you'll show up and make your voice heard."

SUPERFERRY VOYAGES CANCELED YET AGAIN

Honolulu Advertiser - January 28, 2008

Severe high seas have forced the cancelation of all Superferry voyages again today and tomorrow's voyages are considered "marginal," a notice on the Superferry's Web site said.

Passengers booked on these voyages will be contacted directly by Hawai`i Superferry to make alternative arrangements, the notice said.

SUPERFERRY SCAM PLANNED THREE YEARS AGO

Investigation Shows Decision To Allow Superferry To Ignore EIS Decided In December 2004

THE THEFT OF THE CENTURY ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

Imagine someone stealing your car then negotiating with others about selling it to them.

That’s what occurred this last week as the Office of Hawaiian Affairs announced a ceded lands settlement with the so-called “state of Hawai`i.”

Stolen land remains stolen no matter how long the thief retains it or how many times they claim to own it.

Their attempts to “sell” land to the state that was stolen from Hawai`i Nationals during the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom is a slap in the face to all who support a Free Hawai`i.

Here’s what one activist reported when Hawai`i patriots attempted to attend those negotiations –

“OHA changed rooms a couple of times to evade us that wanted to sit in.…they refused to let anyone in and locked the door. While we waited to try to get in, someone came out and stated that they concluded their meeting and everyone exited out of a back door as to not confront us.”

So much for OHA fulfilling their mission of working for the betterment of native Hawaiians.

Can anything be done to stop this?

Watch our Free Hawai`i video commentary this coming Wednesday on Free Hawai`i TV for instructions on how you can help prevent the finalization of this deal.

There are actions you can take to stop this sell-out dead in its tracks. We’ll tell you what they are and how you can do it.

By the way, if you support our issues on the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network, please email this to a friend and see below how you can help us continue our work.

And for prime examples of people creating a better future for Hawai`i, here’s this weeks show on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“Every Feather A Prayer – A Visit With Uncle Helemano”

One day at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center where he worked, Uncle Helemano noticed an old kahili, the feathered standards of old Hawai`i, in need of repair.

He decided he would take it upon himself to learn the skills in order to repair it.

And that’s how Uncle became one of Hawai`i’s best-known contemporary kahili makers.

Naturally when we sat down with him to talk story, he told us some amazing things including who the very first kahili really were.

He also told us kahili marked parameters in the old days when ali`i were present, since ancient Hawai`i had no flags.

We saw right away there’s a lot more to it, since for Uncle creating kahili is not just about passing the culture down through the generations, “it’s also about a positive message to our people.”

Don’t miss our fascinating visit with Uncle Helemano as he actually shares with us his process of making kahili and also shows us some of his astonishing and unique one-of-a-kind pieces. You’ll see for yourself he puts positive thoughts and prayer into each and every feather.

OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS ONLY PROTECTS ITS OWN INTERESTS

Honolulu Star Bulletin - January 24, 2008

After spending nearly seven years and more than $3 million of
beneficiary/taxpayer money to get people to support the Akaka Bill, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has begun to accept the inevitable, the bill's demise.

Their "very conflicted" declaration that it be "THE" native Hawaiian
governing entity confirms suspicions of their intentions of a Sen. Dan Inouye-backed agenda - the reaffirmation and confirmation of the illegal statehood of Hawai`i, the Organic Act - the territorial acquisition of Hawai`i, the alleged annexation of Hawai`i, the Republic of Hawai`i, the provisional government and the alleged overthrow of the government/kingdom of Hawai`i by using Congress' definition of "kanaka" as indigenous Native Americans and its plenary powers to rule and eliminate our independence claims forever!

OHA acts of "global-like" settlements, cronyism and funding of special
projects, taking place as we speak, continue to fester the divisiveness within our community and we are told to "stop grumbling."

OHA's kuleana is to take care of its trust responsibilities and listen to
all its constituents.

We have asked for reconciliation as guaranteed by
President Clinton's 1993 Apology Bill. That needs to be defined.

Meaningful reconciliation would help to create more pono solutions toward
self-determination and self-governance for the kanaka Hawai`i and address the historical injustices rather than just the Akaka Bill, which only perpetuates our dependence on governmental handouts, entitlements and dictation.

SUPERFERRY COSTS HAWAI`I $350,00 MORE

The state Department of Transportation said 10 weeks of daily tugboat service — at a cost of $350,000 — is needed at Kahului Harbor to support Hawai`i Superferry operations.

The tug service is necessary to keep a state-owned barge snug against the end of Pier 2C during ocean surges and to provide safe loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles, according to a request filed Friday to exempt the contract from state procurement rules.

Without the assistance, the state could be liable for damage claims by the Superferry of $18,000 a day if it cannot meet its obligation to provide barges with mooring systems to enable ferry operations, the request said.

IT'S SUPERFERRY SINK OR SWIM TIME ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

It was very rough sailing for the Superferry this last week.

Yesterday FreeHawaii.Info revealed Superferry attorneys declared an “emergency situation” in a letter to the Public and Utilities Commission.

They readily conceded the Superferrys ability to continue running is in serious doubt with so few passengers.

Last Monday FreeHawaii.Info addressed the fact the US military plans to use the ship to transport heavy military equipment to the neighbor islands, including Stryker vehicles confirming what many knew all along - the Superferry is a US military transport system as much as anything else.

All this while keeping Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares in the dark.

And on Friday we told you large winter swells have once again not only shut the Superferry down completely at least through tomorrow, but seriously damaged the docking barge in Kahului harbor.

Two things are quickly becoming apparent – the extent to which Hawai`i residents are boycotting the ship and the fact that John Garibaldi will soon be going to Linda Lingle seeking a financial bailout to keep the Superferry afloat.

This last Wednesday on Free Hawai`i TV we predicted the Superferrys need of a cash infusion of millions soon from the Lingle administration and what you can do right now to help prevent that.

The Superferry has been both a public relations and financial disaster – a big mahalo to all who continue to boycott the ship.

Our Voices Of Truth Superferry shows continue to be two of our most popular.

Stay tuned to the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network for Superferry breaking news and what you can do to help stop a Superferry super bailout that is sure to come.

People who are willing to take a stand to protect Hawai`i and its people is what it’s all about on both Free Hawai`i TV and our show this week on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

MONDAY, January 21st At 7:00 PM & FRIDAY, January 25th At 5:30 PM Hawai`i Island – Na Leo, Channel 53
TUESDAY, January 22nd At 6:30 PM & WEDNESDAY, January 23rd At 6:30 AM Maui – Akaku, Channel 53
THURSDAY, January 24th At 8:30 PM & FRIDAY, January 25th At 8:30 AM Kaua`i – Ho`ike, Channel 52

“Fish Out Of Water – A Visit With Andre Perez”

Very few of us will ever find ourselves entering prison – especially if we’ve committed no crime.

Yet that’s exactly what Andre Perez did upon discovering the state of Hawai`i was shipping significant numbers of native Hawaiian inmates out of Hawai`i to prisons on the US continent in remote places like Arizona and Mississippi.

Andre correctly surmised they were not only longing to be back home, but connected to their culture – some for the first time.

What to do? Hop on a plane and bring their culture to them, starting with observing the Makahiki.

So there they ended up, standing in a prison yard outside in twenty degrees weather, dressed only in malo and kikepa greeting the sun as it rose in the early morning sky to herald the beginning of Makahiki.

You’ll be as riveted as us as Andre describes his experiences inside prison, and what it was like working with the inmates, including a surprise he could have never imagined – coming face to face with a convict who committed a crime against his own family – and who turned out to be his cousin.

IS THIS THE END FOR THE SUPERFERRY?

The Hawai`i Superferry is in an "emergency situation" with so few passengers that its ability to continue running between O`ahu and Maui is imperiled, according to a letter written last month by attorneys for the Superferry.

The Superferry vessel Alakai, which can seat 866 passengers, is averaging only 150 passengers per day, far below its planned ridership of 410, according to the Dec. 21 letter from Superferry attorneys Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel.

The letter was sent to the state Public Utilities Commission requesting an extension of the Superferry's $39 one-way promotional fares through June 5.

Attorney Audrey Ng wrote that Hawai`i Superferry "must increase its business immediately" to address weak bookings, interisland airline competition and continuing litigation and protests; to pay for fixed expenses as well as to compensate for repeated delays; and to start a second Maui trip.

"Even with the current promotional fares through March 12, 2008, HSF is experiencing bookings at numbers much lower than expected," wrote Ng.

"It is critical for the company to counter the negative public perception or misgivings about the ferry service by getting people on-board to try the product."

SUPERFERRY CANCELS SECOND MAUI DAILY SERVICE

High Surf Stops Trips To Maui Altogether For Second Day

For the second day in a row, Hawai`i Superferry on Thursday canceled its O`ahu-Maui round trip because of high surf in Kahului Harbor.

The surge conditions have damaged a barge used to load and unload vehicles from the Alakai.

The Hawaii Superferry will also postpone the start of a second voyage between O`ahu and Maui in response to concerns by Maui County officials.

Last week, Maui Mayor Tavares had said she was "disappointed" that the Superferry had not consulted county officials and members of the community before adding the second route.

DID YOU KNOW THE EFFECTS OF OVER A CENTURY OF U.S. OCCUPATION ON NATIVE HAWAIIANS ?

The Hawaiian people have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.

By 1805 that number had been halved.

By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.

Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

And they make up 37 percent of the state's homeless population, according to a 2003 survey.

SURPRISE! - SUPERFERRY TO CARRY NATIONAL GUARD GEAR TO MAUI

Officials Ignore Local Community Input

Honolulu Star-Bulletin - January 7, 2008

Twenty-four pieces of Hawai`i Army National Guard heavy engineering equipment are shipping to Maui to remove debris left behind from thunderstorms and flash floods last month....

...It is the first time the military has used the ferry to transport heavy machinery, and Superferry officials say it underscores the value of the vessel.

"All along, we've planned that this ship can be a real asset to civil defense at a time of disaster," said Terry O'Halloran, Superferry's director of business and development.

The Superferry's cooperation with the military comes days after Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares expressed disappointment that the Superferry was adding a second daily trip to Maui without consulting community members.

"It continues to be a contentious matter for many in our community," Tavares said in a statement.

REMEMBERING ONE OF HAWAI`I'S GREATEST PATRIOTS ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

Today we remember one of Hawai`i’s greatest patriots – Joseph Kaho`oluhi Nawahi who along with his wife, Emma owned and operated the Hawaiian language independence newspaper, Ke Aloha `Aina.

Born January 13, 1842 in Puna, Joseph Nawahi attended Hilo boarding school, Lahainaluna seminary and Royal school.

A self-taught practicing attorney, he served in the Hawai`i Kingdom legislature, the Queen’s cabinet and championed her efforts to replace the Bayonet Constitution forced on King Kalakaua in 1887.

After the illegal provisional government declared themselves in power in 1893, Joseph Nawahi founded a native resistance group, Hui Aloha `Aina to protest Hawai`i’s illegal annexation in 1898 and to restore the Queen to power.

Their newspaper, Ke Aloha `Aina, challenged the unlawful government and later the illegal republic of Hawai`i.

For these activities, Joseph Nawahi was jailed twice - in 1894 and 1895.

Sadly, Joseph Nawahi contracted tuberculosis upon his release and died at the age of 54 in September of 1896.

Joseph Nawahi will be honored today from noon to 4 PM during Sovereign Sunday observances at `Iolani Palace grounds in Honolulu.

The public is invited to attend this free event.

Joseph and Emma Nawahi were two of Hawai`i’s greatest patriots.

We at the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network remain in awe of their magnificent accomplishments and dedicate our Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future shows this week to their memory.

ILLEGAL OVERTHROW OF HAWAI`I TO BE OBSERVED

"Sovereign Sunday" Events At `Iolani Palace This Weekend

HONOLULU - "Sovereign Sunday" will be observed
from noon to 4 PM on `Iolani Palace grounds to commemorate the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

The day is also the birthday of Joseph Kaho`oluhi Nawahi, Hawaiian patriot who along with his wife Emma `Aima Nawahi, owned and operated the Hawaiian language independence newspaper, Ke Aloha `Aina in the years before the illegal overthrow by the US.

When haole conspirators backed by US Marines ousted Queen Lili`uokalani from the throne in 1893, Nawahi and his wife organized 7,500 men and 11,000 women to form the patriotic group Hui Aloha `Aina in order to oppose the takeover.

Although Nawahi died shortly after in 1896 due to tuberculoses he contracted while a political prisoner, Hui Aloha `Aina, along with a sister organization Hui Kalai`aina went on to collect over 38,000 signatures protesting annextion of Hawai`i to the United States.

These petitions documented the widespread opposition to annexation in 1897 and today remain a key factor in Hawai`i's claims to sovereignty.

All are welcome to attend this historic event, which is free and open to the public.

DO OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS TRUSTEES DESERVE RAISES?

Honolulu Advertiser - January 6, 2007

An advisory panel is recommending that members of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs board of trustees receive significant raises this year....

Under the draft plan, trustees would see their annual salary go to $50,000, up about 22 percent from the current $41,000, as early as next month. The chairman's salary would go to $57,000, up about 21 percent, from the current $47,000.

THE PEOPLE OF KAUA`I CRY FOR HELP ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

We want to bring you an update on one of our recent guests on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

Ka`iulani Edens-Huff, who was featured on our recent Radio Free Kaua`i segment, was taken off the air at KKCR radio and her weekly show, Songs Of Sovereignty, cancelled.

Moreover others staffers calling for her reinstatement were also removed from the station.

KKCR, which broadcasts from Kaua`i but can also be heard on parts of O`ahu, is not a commercial radio station but community owned and run.

It was the vision of the late John Butch Kekahu III, founder of the Koani Foundation.

Butch knew the importance of media without restrictions.

What has now become very clear is KKCR management’s real purpose in all of this - to silence Ka`iulani’s weekly message of a Free Hawai`i.

But instead of us telling you the rest of the story, here are the people of Kaua`i themselves.

Take a look –

We at the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network call for Ka`iulani’s immediate reinstatement. We consider it outrageous her voice would be silenced.

If you agree, here’s how to help regardless of where on earth you live.

Email KKCR station management at kkcr@kkcr.org or call them toll free at (866) 275-1112.

Demand the immediate reinstatement of all who have been silenced and let them know you support a Free Hawai`i.

The voice of the people is indeed the basis for strong community whether it’s on local radio or the world over right here on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“Out Of The Box – A Visit With Hinaleimoana Wong”

Since she was last on Voices Of Truth Hina Wong has been, well, busy.

An educator at two charter schools in Hawai`i, Hina delivers the kind of education students crave – and can get virtually nowhere else.

“You don’t have to go far from home to be successful,” is the message she gives her students at Halau Lokahi charter school on O`ahu and another one on the island of Kaua`i.

Teaching Hawaiian cultural values, she helps her students answer the question, who are we as Hawaiians?

Yet don’t for a minute think it’s only native Hawaiians, as students of all ethnicities attend because, as Hina reminds us, her schools mirror the multicultural population of the independent Hawaiian nation before it was illegally overthrown.

The impact her curriculum has had on her students is both profound and lasting. For the first time they see they don’t have to assimilate to be successful.

HAWAI`I SUPERFERRY PUTS KAUA`I ROUTE ON HOLD

HONOLULU (AP) — The operator of Hawai`i's new interisland ferry, which got the green light to resume trips despite environmental protests, said Friday it is further delaying service on one route.

It won't immediately resume service between Honolulu and Kaua`i but will instead start a second voyage between Honolulu and Maui starting Jan. 16, said Hawai`i Superferry president and CEO John Garibaldi.

The company is imposing the delay "in order to allow more time in which to work with the community on Kaua`i to ensure a safe and successful resumption of service," Garibaldi said.

"As we have always stated, our business model is dependent on running two trips per day, and right now we've got to meet those needs," he said.

The Honolulu-Kaua`i run of the Superferry was halted soon after it began in August because of demonstrations.

Ferry opponents complain the 350-foot catamaran, which carries more than 800 passengers and 200 vehicles, will disturb whales and harm the islands' fragile ecosystem.

The Maui run was quickly shut down because of legal problems, including traffic restrictions, but resumed in December after the Legislature met to resolve the issue.
