Hawaiian Kingdom mo`i or leaders were wise people. Queen Lili`uokalani, whose birthday we celebrate this weekend was no exception.
As we look around the world today at the upheaval in the Middle East bringing death and destruction, we only need think back at the wise actions Hawai`iʻs Lili`u took to spare her beloved Hawaiian Kingdom that same outcome.
At great personal cost to herself as the illegal US takeover of Hawai`i occurred, she very wisely took steps that not only avoided bloodshed, but protected the legality and sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom until its government could be legally restored.
Sadly, even though that did not occur in her lifetime, it is nonetheless happening today, as we honor Hawai`iʻs queen for her brave and patriotic acts for her `aina and people.
Hawai`iʻs is experiencing many changes today, not the least of which is the restoration of our government, and Ikaika Hussey is one of those chronicling the changes he sees.
