Third World Conditions In Store For Hawaiians If Akaka Bill Passes
The Hill - January 30, 2007
Senate Indian Affairs Committee Chairman Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.), Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-Hawaii) and former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) spoke Thursday about problems facing American Indians at a breakfast co-sponsored by the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and The Hill.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Dorgan said. “We have Third World conditions in a number of Indian reservations in areas of housing, health and education. We need to address these issues.”

Mahalo one and all yet another week for your enthusiastic feedback on our latest Voices Of Truth segments.
Everyone likes our visit with Manu Meyer – we told you she’s awesome!
And so many of you also commented on our interview with Rebecca Tsosie and Maui Solomon regarding the disastrous experiences with federal recognition involving their own native peoples.
But did you ever wonder about the path traveled by some only to find themselves on the front lines fighting for a Free Hawai`i ?
How it has affected them as individuals, their families, and what price have they paid?
This week we debut a brand new Voices Of Truth segment with Hui Pu spokesperson Andre Perez.
Andre’s not the type to take much of anything lying down when it comes to protecting his own people and the Hawaiian Nation.
He’s very up front regarding the ups and downs in his own life that ultimately led to his involvement with Hui Pu.
As a matter of fact, we’re excited to bring you an excerpt of our interview with Andre right here, on Free Hawai`i TV – part of the Free Hawai`i Broadcasting Network.
What more can we say?
Don’t miss our full interview with Andre - tune in this week as he reveals his own fascinating personal journey of occupation on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.
NEW PROGRAMMING CHANGE NOTES - Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future is now seen on Maui on Akaku, Channel 53 on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 PM and Wednesday mornings at 6:30 AM and also across Hawai`i Island on Channel 53 on Na Leo at the regularly scheduled days and times.
MONDAY, January 29th At 7:00 PM & FRIDAY, February 2nd At 5:30 PM – Hawai`i Island – Na Leo, Channel 53
“Aloha Is Our Intelligence – A Visit With Manu Aluli Meyer”
“If knowledge is power, then understanding is liberation.”
Manu Myer is not your average educator - or human being for that matter.
Growing up as someone who was much better in the school yard than with school books, Manu quickly developed what few of her teacher’s saw – an incredible intellect and capacity for motivating others.
Today, Manu is in a class all by herself – as comfortable with Hawaiian epistemology and quantum physics as she is with her own ukulele.
Having just returned from a year in Aotearoa (New Zealand) packed with incredible adventures and experiences, she reveals not only what she learned, but why the people and `aina of that placed have so deeply affected her.
Be sure and sit your entire `ohana (family) down and hear Manu as she reveals what quantum physics and indigenous culture have in common, as well as her vision of a Free Hawai`i few of us have ever imagined. We promise this is one Hawai`i Maoli wahine you’ll remember for a long time to come.
TUESDAY, January 30th At 6:30 PM & WEDNESDAY, January 31st At 6:30 AM – Maui – Akaku, Channel 53
THURSDAY, February 1st At 8:30 PM & FRIDAY, February 2nd At 8:30 AM – Kaua`i – Ho`ike, Channel 52
SATURDAY, February 3rd At 8:00 PM – O`ahu - ‘Olelo, Channel 53
“A Journey Of Occupation – A Visit With Andre Perez”
What would it be like to be in the US military for eight years, then find yourself living on the streets?
That’s what happened to Andre Perez who went from one extreme to another.
And from the streets, he found his way into the Kaho`olawe occupation, which, by his own accounts, was a life-changing experience.
It had to be because Andre’s never at a loss for words when it comes to defending his people that led him to the next chapter of his life.
Currently the spokesperson for Hui Pu, as well as a Halau Lokahi teacher, Andre recently found himself in the middle of yet another occupation – the dramatic taking of `Iolani Palace last year by Hui Pu to publicly oppose the Akaka bill.
As we look to the future of Hawai`i, we’re sure you’ll agree with us that Andre and others like him will play a prominent role in it.
Don’t miss our visit with Andre who’s part of the new generation of warriors who are as fearless as they are articulate. You’ll see why he’s a role model for the `opio (young) of today as well as a leader for tomorrow.

WELCOME IF YOU'RE VISITING FREEHAWAII.INFO FOR THE FIRST TIME!
Free Hawai`i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent nation status, as it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.
In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.
DID YOU KNOW -
98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow!
Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai`i is in Hawaiian hands.
Over 60% today is in non-Hawaiian hands!
A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai`i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians!
Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai`i.
Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai`i today.
Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators compared to any ethnic group in the US.
Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile compared to any ethnic group in the US.
Descendants of the Hawaiian Nation want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.
Hawai`i Was A Free Nation - But Never Free For The Taking!

Attorney Rebecca Tsosie, a member of the Yaqui tribe from southern Arizona and recent guest on Voices Of Truth - One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future, issued a memo recently after speaking at the Native Hawaiian Bar Association Conference on "The Rights Of Native Hawaiians To Self-Determination."
Here, in part, is what she had to say -
"Self-determination means that the indigenous people have the autonomy to declare their own identity and their political status.
"If another Nation maintains the right to define who is a Native Hawaiian and the right to form a government for them, is that 'self-determination?'
"This bill grants the Hawaiian people the right to have the U.S. define them and then recognize the government it has defined.
"This bill preserves 'existing entitlements' as they are provided for under the operative appropriations law (no guarantees) but says that Hawaiians are not entitled to anything more than they currently have unless the U.S. and the state of Hawai`i agree to that.
"Most importantly, the bill extinguishes any legal claims for land or resources and leaves any future rights to land and resources purely to 'negotiation' with no legal recourse to file a claim for lack of good faith negotiation.
"There will be some nominal support from a very small and new Office within Interior that has the legal mandate to 'help' Native Hawaiians if it can convince all the agencies and the state that they deserve help."

Dept. Of Interior Can Do Anything It Wants!
April 3, 2006 By Jodi Rave of the Missoulian
PORTLAND, Ore. - Harrison Tsosie of the Navajo Nation doesn't like Washington bureaucrats telling the tribe how to manage 15 million acres of tribal land held in trust by the federal government.
And now a new federal law and proposed Interior Department policies are changing all the rules governing 56 million acres of trust lands around the country.
"The big concern of the Navajos is this notion the federal government holds land in trust," said Tsosie, Navajo Nation deputy attorney general.
"It provides an opportunity for the federal government to have pervasive control over all activities within the Navajo Nation."
Tsosie arrived in Portland with about 200 other tribal representatives from the western half of the United States on Wednesday to attend an all-day comment session with Interior Department staff members.
The task at hand - Try to understand the complex, sweeping list of proposed regulatory changes about to dramatically alter the landscape of trust fund management....

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs claims if the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act, (Akaka Bill) isn’t passed, alleged subsequent loss of federal funding could have a dramatic effect upon not only Native Hawaiians, but also Hawai`i's economy.
Let's take a look at actual annual federal appropriations over the last few years to cover all 250,000 people who call themselves Native Hawaiian -
Education - $30.5 million / 250,000 Hawaiians = $122.00 per Hawaiian.
How much education can you buy this year with $122.00? If teachers are making say $30,000 a year you could hire 1,016 teachers. That means there would only have to be 246 Hawaiians per classroom.
Affordable Housing - $9.6 million/250,000 Hawaiians = $38.40 per Hawaiian.
How much of your yearly rental costs does $38.40 cover?
Health Care - $7 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $28.00 per Hawaiian.
How much dental and medical insurance can you buy with $28.00? Maybe get only half your teeth cleaned this year and hope you don’t get sick?
Strengthening Community Colleges - $3.25 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $13.00 per Hawaiian.
How many units of academic instruction does $13.00 cover at a community college these days?
Vocational Education - $2.9 million/250,000 Hawaiians = $11.60 per Hawaiian.
What can you learn how to do for $11.60?
Community Development - $2 million/250,000 Hawaiians = $8.00 per Hawaiian.
How much Community infrastructure does $8.00 buy?
Strengthening Community Colleges (Agriculture) - $1.5 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $6.00 per Hawaiian.
What does $6.00 buy in the way of agricultural education at community college these days?
Housing Loan Guarantees - $1 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $4.00 per Hawaiian.
How much of your annual mortgage does $4.00 cover?
Culture & Arts - $740,000/250,000 Hawaiians = $2.96 per Hawaiian.
For $2.96, about all the culture you can afford is a plastic kukui nut lei.
Looks Like About $233.96 Per Hawaiian ...Less Administrative Costs, Of Course.

As expected, the Akaka bill, which would legitimize the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation as well as forever seal the theft of native lands, was reintroduced into the US congress this last week.
No hearings have been held on the bill in Hawai`i since 2000 where the only hearing was quickly ended after community outrage over federal recognition was voiced by the majority in attendance.
The reintroduction of the bill is another sign that “they just don’t get it.”
It’s as though the occupiers are saying “We don’t care what you want – here’s what we’re going to impose upon you.”
Poll after poll in Hawai`i has clearly shown the vast majority of Hawai`i’s residents are against this bill.
It’s time for the people’s voice to be heard.
It’s not too early to contact your two senators now and let them know your opposition.
Let them know you support a Free Hawai`i, not an overthrown one.
For those that don’t know what’s at stake, ask them to sit down and see for themselves this week as Rebecca Tsosie and Maui Solomon relate how much federal recognition has been a disaster for their own people in both Arizona and Aotearoa.
It’s all about getting you the information you need to make up your own mind here on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“Even They Can See It – A Visit With Maui Solomon & Rebecca Tsosie”
Maui Solomon, a Maori from Aotearoa (New Zealand,) and Rebecca Tsosie, a member of the Yaqui tribe from southern Arizona, come from two different worlds geographically apart.
Yet, they have much in common.
Successful attorneys, both Maui and Rebecca focus their legal practice in helping to protect their own native people.
And both have seen the devastating effects of federal recognition in their own lands.
“Don’t let it happen here,” is the message they brought to us loud and clear.
By describing what did happen to their people after federal recognition, we have an opportunity to see both the “before and after” picture. And it’s one they tell us it’s a mistake we don’t ever want to make.
You’ll be as hooked as we were as they describe the very same slick arguments and false promises their own politicians put forth to sell federal recognition as those we’ve heard in Hawai`i. And you'll be equally as disgusted when you hear the results. Compelling as they are convincing, their message is one all of us need to hear.

Land Costs Five Times US National Average
The Wall Street Journal - January 11, 2007
WAIANAE, Hawai`i - Rising before dawn, Patrick Wong walks 45 minutes to his drugstore job in Kapolei, a suburban town 20 miles west of Honolulu, where he stocks shelves starting at 7 a.m.
The post pays $8.25 an hour and offers health insurance for Mr. Wong, his wife and partially deaf toddler.
But Mr. Wong, 33 years old, and his family can't afford a place to live.
Five months ago they left his mother's home, where he was paying $600 a month in rent.
Faced with the steepest rents of any state and scant available public housing, they were forced to join Hawai`i's swelling homeless ranks.
Roughly 6,000 people in the state are without permanent shelter, according to Hawai`i's Homeless Programs Division.
That's nearly double the number without homes in 1999.
Increasingly, this population consists of working families with children.
Some, like the Wongs, live in city-run shelters. Others have taken up residence on the beach, turning Hawai`i's picturesque shores into homeless encampments where hundreds of people live in tents pitched on the sand.
One big factor behind Hawai`i's homelessness is the housing boom that swept across the U.S.
Run-ups in home prices displaced families nationwide, but the problem in Hawai`i - where land costs are more than five times the national average - is particularly acute.

Here's What Happened When The Hawaiian Kingdom Was Overthrown
The following day, the resident conspirators numbering 18, mostly Americans, sneaked to a government building a few yards from where the American troops lodged the night before.
There, an American lawyer, who had been a resident of Hawai`i less than a year previous, proclaimed they were now the government of Hawai`i.
Calling themselves the "provisional government" and selecting Sanford Dole president, they were to exist for the explicit purpose and until terms could be arranged with the U.S. for annexation.
Before the full declaration had been read, the U.S. marines marched into the building to protect and support them.
American Minister Plenipotentiary and commander of all U.S. forces in Hawai`i, John L. Stevens, gave them immediate recognition as the government of Hawai`i as had been planned.
He then joined in their demand that the Queen surrender under "threat of war with the U.S."
"Hawai`i Was A Free Nation - But Never Free For The Taking."

Here's What Happened When The Hawaiian Kingdom Was Overthrown
On January 16, 1893, United States diplomatic and military personnel conspired with a small group of individuals to overthrow the constitutional government of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
Under the direction of the American Minister, John L. Stevens, US Marines were directed to land at Honolulu Harbor, ostensibly to protect American lives and property.
This action led to the subversion of the constitutional Government of Hawai`i in the interests of annexation to the United States.
On the same day, over 160 American marines landed in peaceful Honolulu armed with Gatling gun, Howitzer cannons, double cartridge belts filled with ammunition, carbines and other instruments of war.
The protest by Hawai`i's Queen that such landing was a breach of treaty and international law was simply ignored.
The troops marched along the streets of Honolulu, rifles facing the Queen's palace.

Mahalo to you all for your words of appreciation about our new segment on the dangers of federal recognition featuring Maui Solomon and Rebecca Tsosie.
As one viewer wrote, “It should be obvious to everyone that the Akaka bill would be a disaster for all of Hawai`i – who in their right mind could be for this very bad idea, anyway?”
Well, most would agree except maybe those scared into it by the Office Of Hawaiian Affairs.
Nevertheless, it’s important that everyone in Hawai`i confront the truth regarding the dangers of federal recognition and what it would do to our people.
And no one really does a better job than Maui and Rebecca because they’ve already seen the aftereffects.
They know what we would be in for.
So if anybody should try to tell you federal recognition would be a good thing for Hawai`i, ask them to sit down and hear from the real experts this week on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

“Songs For Our Soul – A Visit With Liko Martin”
Hawai`i has a lot of singers and songwriters, but none more talented than Liko Martin.
We’ve been trying to get Liko to join us on the show for quite a while and it was definitely worth the wait.
Liko is a musician’s musician – his talents and abilities are up there with the best the world over.
He tells us details of his just finished sessions in a recording studio in Oakland, California with “A list” performers, and even about a Hawaiian opera he’s currently writing!
Perhaps best known for his “Hawai`i Loa Ku Like Kakou, All Hawai`i Stand Together,” Liko has seen and done it all – from Hollywood to Hawai`i, and for the first time reveals what the journey has been like and taught him.
Here’s your opportunity to catch one of Hawai`i’s most unique and treasured talents as he talks about his life, his music, how it comes to him, the role model that inspired it all and how he went from living in a car on the streets of Los Angeles to being one of Hawai`i’s premier musicians today.

"Act of War: The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation"
This hour-long documentary is a provocative look at a historical event of which few Americans are aware.
In mid-January, 1893, armed troops from the U.S.S. Boston landed at Honolulu in support of a treasonous coup d'etat against the constitutional sovereign of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Queen Lili`uokalani.
The event was described by U.S. President Grover Cleveland as "an act of war."
Stylized re-enactments, archival photos and film, political cartoons, historic quotes and presentations by Hawaiian scholars tell Hawaiian history through Hawaiian eyes.
Produced in association with the Center for Hawaiian Studies, University of Hawai`i. Featuring historians and scholars Haunani-Kay Trask, Lilikala Kame`eleihiwa, Kekuni Blaisdell and Jonathan Osorio.
"Act of War - The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Nation" was broadcast first during the centennial year of the overthrow of Queen Lili`uokalani, a landmark year in the Hawaiian movement for sovereignty and independence.
In that same year, the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution admitting the illegal taking of Hawai`i and formally apologizing to the Hawaiian people.

Hawaiians suffer the worst health profile in Hawai`i.
While rates of death from heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes have decreased for non-Hawaiians, they have increased, sometimes dramatically, for Hawaiians.
Below 1 year of age, the Hawaiian death rate is more than double the overall official average.
Between 1 and 4 years of age, it is triple the official figure, and so on into adulthood.
Just under 20 percent of the population, we suffer 75 percent of the deaths for persons less than 18 years of age.

Why are there so many Native Hawaiians in prison?
What's being done about it?
MauiTime Magazine -
January 4, 2007
Why are Native Hawaiians overrepresented in prison?
It's a simple question, but it doesn't have a simple answer.
Ask the experts and you'll get answers ranging from "oppression" to "poverty" to "lack of motivation."
There are colonization theories and there are cultural theories.
At this point, Native Hawaiians own most of the top misery indices in Hawai`i.
These include high percentage in prison, high infant mortality, high rates of illness, low educational attainment, low income-level, high unemployment and high rates of drug addiction and alcoholism....
...RaeDeen M. Keahiolalo Karasuda, a doctoral candidate working on these questions with the University of Hawai`i, emphasizes that the roots are vast and deep, but says locking Hawaiians up is a colonization mechanism.
She says Hawaiians are a very resilient culture and have been practicing civil disobedience for over a hundred years now.
Her estimate, derived from many prison visits and research work, is that Hawai`i prisons' realistic Native Hawaiian population today is actually closer to 70 percent....

With the US Congress back in session this week, we can expect the Akaka bill, a plan to impose federal recognition on Native Hawaiians, to be brought up again sometime this year.
Even though it’s well documented what would happen should it ever pass and therefore become imposed law in Hawai`i, there are still a handful who believe “it’s the best we can get.”
This week we bring you another brand new segment that shows, once and for all, why it would be anything but.
We introduce two individuals from very different parts of the world - Rebecca Tsosie, an attorney and Yaqui tribe member from Arizona, and Maui Solomon, Maori from Aotearoa, also an attorney.
Both have seen the devastating effects of federal recognition on their peoples.
Both now spend the majority of their time in their own law practices trying to protect their own people from those effects.
Rebecca and Maui came to Hawai`i to warn us all what’s in store should the Akaka bill succeed.
Their message, both disturbing and shocking, should be a wake up call.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to look into the future and see an outcome that we don’t want, so instead we may all work together, with lokahi (unity) for one we do on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.
Programming Change Note - Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future is now seen across Hawai`i Island on Channel 53 on Na Leo.
MONDAY, January 8th At 7:00 PM & FRIDAY, January 12th At 5:30 PM – Hawai`i Island – Na Leo, Channel 53
WEDNESDAY, January 10th At 6:30 PM & THURSDAY, January 11th At 6:45 AM – Maui – Akaku, Channel 53
THURSDAY, January 11th At 8:30 PM & FRIDAY, January 12th At 8:30 AM – Kaua`i – Ho`ike, Channel 52
SATURDAY, January 13th At 8:00 PM – O`ahu - ‘Olelo, Channel 53
Voices Of Truth interviews those creating a better future for Hawai`i to discover what made them go from armchair observers to active participants in the hopes of inspiring viewers to do the same.
Those not in Hawai`i wishing to view the series may do so by visiting http://www.olelo.org and then clicking “NAT- Channel 53.” A screen should then display allowing you to see the show via live streaming.
Please refer to the ‘Olelo television programming notes above for segment times and titles.

USA covert and overt activities led to the invasion of the Hawaiian Kingdom and immediately recognized its complicitors proclamation without the people's knowledge.
Without US military intervention and USA complicity, the USA puppet Provisional Government would not have lasted for more than an hour.
Using that backing, they created the Republic of Hawai`i against the people's wishes.
All legal attempts to annex Hawai`i to the USA failed because the people overwhelmly protested and sent their Ku'e Petitions to Washington D.C.
It was ignored by the pro-annexationists and complicitors.
In covering up the hoax, Congress passed the Newlands Resolution declaring that the majority wished for the annexation of Hawai`i without a lawful treaty.
That's how Hawai`i became unlawfully annexed.

INDEPENDENCE RECOGNIZED AS LEGITIMATE
Savannah Morning News - December 17th, 2006
Thirty years ago Andy saw the future.
"Golf courses,'' he muttered into his beer. "From here all the way down to Makena...."
"True Hawai`i,'' he said. "It's dying."
Returning several times over the years to the island, I watched the old man's nightmare deepen.
Dirt roads were paved, then widened. Sleepy villages sprouted golf courses and Burger Kings.
This last time, shortly after landing at the airport at Kahului, I was stuck in a monstrous traffic jam, for several hours edging past new high-rises, waiting at new stoplights, creeping through Lahaina....
A Hawaiian sovereignty movement, seeking a measure of self-government, even independence, for the natives, is growing.
Head off the beaten track, away from the five-star hotels, and you'll hear Hawaiian spoken.
On front porches, you'll see the state flag hanging upside-down, the movement's symbol of defiance.
Hawai`i, the natives say, was stolen from them. They want it back.
You can't blame them....
