Many of you have asked us which candidates we recommend for Office Of Hawaiian Affairs trustees in tomorrowʻs primary election.
Our answer is based on two premises -
First, while we recognize the Office Of Hawaiian Affairs is a part of the fake state, and therefore a part of the prolonged illegal US occupation of Hawai`i, we feel strongly that as long as OHA does exist, it should serve all its beneficiaries well.
For far too long this has not been the case. Rather than serving beneficiaries, private under the table dealings, personal enrichment and fortifying the illegal occupation has characterized activities at OHA.
Furthermore we are not convinced that voting in the upcoming OHA election is at odds with or contradicts support for a Free Hawai`i. This vote is about ending corruption at OHA so those kanaka beneficiaries and their `ohana who need help the most can receive it.
Our second premise is that only two things should dictate who to vote for -
One is making sure the forensic audit occurs.
The second is the removal and replacement of OHAʻs CEO, Kamana`opono Crabbe.
Unless these two things happen, there will be no reform of OHA.
Both of these actions have been stymied and blocked for too long by several of OHAʻs “old guard” trustees.
Your vote in this election is critical to shift the balance and majority vote of trustees so these two things can occur.
Unfortunately perfect candidates, like perfect human beings, do not exist.
And many who are running are not electable.
Therefore some of those we recommend for election are not without drawbacks, but do have a good chance of winning.
Most importantly, those we recommend support the forensic audit as well as the removal and replacement of OHAʻs CEO and if elected will shift the majority vote in order to make this happen.
Despite drawbacks, these are the ones who are electable and will make sure the forensic audit happens and vote to replace OHAʻs CEO.
Based on the above, we recommend the following -

Keali`i Makekau
O`ahu Seat (1) - Samuel Wilder King II
Maui Seat - Does not appear on tomorrowʻs primary ballot. (Since there are only two candidates, both will automatically advance to the general election in November.)
We are fully aware that you may currently have reservations about some of the above recommended candidates.
Simply put - if any of the above candidates are problematic but you are committed to reforming OHA, hold your nose & vote.
These are the ones who will create a new majority so that the “old guard” trustees will no longer be able to hold the other trustees and OHAʻs beneficiaries hostage and drive their private agendas.

FORMER OHA TRUSTEE & PRIMARY OPPONENTS ENDORSE KELI`I AKINA
Malama Solomon, Kealii Makekau and Paul Mossman Call for New Leadership
Retired State Senator and former Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustee Malama Solomon has joined the ranks of native Hawaiian and community leaders endorsing Keli`i Akina, Ph.D., for OHA Trustee-at-Large in the November 8th general election.
Akina is running against long-term incumbent Haunani Apoliona.
These endorsements come as Dr. Akina continues to voice opposition to the wasteful spending by veteran OHA trustees on federal recognition, which has diverted millions of dollars from housing, jobs, education, and health-care for Hawaiians.
Solomon, who sat on the first OHA board of trustees, stated, “I’m supporting Keli`i Akina for Trustee-at-Large… because, OHA, we definitely need a change in our leadership!” A video of Solomon’s full comments, made at a public gathering near her residence on the Big Island, may be viewed at http://www.keliiakina.com/position_hawaiian_issues

1. Transparency of OHA business, via policy and bylaws changes
2. Accountability of ethical and legal standards — employee evaluation/review
3. Independent financial audit of all holdings and resources
4. Term limits for the trustees’ offices
5. Development of Kaka`ako makai property and securing the water rights to that area
What is your one big idea? -
After seeing firsthand over the years economic opportunities like the development Kaka`ako makai property, a medical marijuana dispensary and the failed $30 million plus [spent] on Akaka Bill/nation building efforts go nowhere and purposely remained sidelined, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Native Hawaii assets is still my idea.
Why are you running for trustee? -
Simply put, change! For years now senior incumbents have run OHA and funded the process of what a Hawaiian tribe should look like and about what they feel is the future for all the Hawaiian people. $30 million lost!
Enough already, follow the mandate fund housing, medical, educational, environmental programs.
Gov. David Ige has said residential development should not be allowed on the Kaka`ako makai lands that were turned over to OHA by the state. How do you believe those lands should be used or developed? -
The ceded land settlement was an undervalued and mishandled from the start.
Fortunately commercial zoning is already in place and with experienced management and remediation work, the potential for a small commercial city offering employment opportunities for businesses both local and mainland can be realized. A master plan is needed.

1. This year has seen an outsized influence from people who want big changes in how government is run. What would you do to change how OHA is run?
First a complete, independent fiscal forensic audit of all holdings and resources followed by a review of the Board of Trustees policy handbook and master plan by a committee of the whole. Lastly term limits for each seat implemented.
2. Hawaii has long been dominated by the Democratic Party establishment. Should this change, and if so, how?
Yes. Hawaii’s people need to stay in touch with government and who they vote to represent them. But people need to vote in order to do that.

For public interest the fee should be reduced dramatically, say 80 percent for all peoples.
4. Voters complain their elected officials don’t listen to them. What would you do to improve communication?
Again trustee term limits for starters, then a greater respect and obedience for the sunshine law and how it’s administered. The more transparent you are the more informed are the people who will then be satisfied and up to date with ones actions.
5. What do you see as the most pressing issue facing your district? What will you do about it?
Ending the Native Hawaiian governing entity process and all funded programs related to the nation building effort, which has since 2000 cost $33 million with no result.
6. Is OHA fulfilling its mandate to serve the Hawaiian people?
No! Since 2000 the strategic plan has been centered on the formation of a government entity or tribe similar to Native Americans at a failed cost of $33 million plus. But sadly the majority of the Board of Trustees has let economic opportunities like a medical marijuana dispensary and the development of the Kakaako Makai properties remain sidelined without a master plan either due to incompetence or instructions that the new tribal entity will have the first shot at that and more.
Lastly the long‐term sustainability of Native Hawaiian assets that provide for all of OHA’s efforts, like education, land management, fiscal resilience, economic sustainability and youth awareness must be managed and maintained properly, and as we have seen in the recent years that has not been the case as the trust is almost insolvent.
7. What are your views regarding Hawaiian independence?
Due to admitted acts of insurgency, rebellion and the overthrow of the constitutional monarchy of the Kingdom of Hawaii, the de jure nation is under a continued impairment and is properly considered as an irregular state. It is, therefore, within the “perfect right” of the Hawaiian people to commence and complete sovereignty reinstatement procedures. The reinstatement process has never been brought up, examined or afforded resources via symposiums, academic debate and community dialogue. Until such time as that happens, justice and complete respect to the law and sprit of our ancestors will not be realized.
8. Are you satisfied with the way OHA has negotiated with the state over ceded-land revenues?
Hell no! The ceded land settlement for Kakaako Makai property proved to be an undervalued and mishandled negotiation from the start. Not securing the submerged lands’ water rights and inheriting the landfill contamination has hampered the overall best use and value of the entire site. Fortunately commercial zoning is already in place and with experienced management and remediation work, the potential for a small commercial city offering employment opportunities for businesses both local and mainland can be realized. This would show Kakaako’s fullest potential and yield income for the trust, which funds all of OHA’s programs.
9. Why do you think Hawaiians are disproportionately represented in our prisons and jails? What can be done about it?
For some Hawaiians the Western model of living doesn’t work or relate to the value system needed to thrive in today’s world. Hawaiian charter schools have shown amazing results, thus yielding a percentage of positive results all around. Funding for programs like this and traditional rehab for inmates will help to reduce the dismal numbers and restore a vibrant community and ohana.
10. Do you support the construction of the TMT telescope atop Mauna Kea?
Until such time as the first and obsolete telescopes are decommissioned/dismantled and the overall cost for building and using it are proposed and realized with an environmental impact statement along with cultural practices and access, no.
