"Ancient Ways For Modern Times - A Visit With Hanale Hopfe"

A lifelong resident of Wai`anae on the west side of O`ahu, Hanale Hopfe knows the area and its history well. He also knows the people well, including Wai`anaeʻs houseless population, so he got the idea for people who are on the land to help take care of the land. When we met Hanale we quickly saw how perfectly suited these age-old approaches are for the present. Join us in our fascinating visit with Hanale Hopfe as he shows us why Hawai`iʻs ancient ways of land management are far superior to todayʻs - Watch It Here

A PARKING LOT IS WHERE IT WAS SHOT ON VOICES OF TRUTH – ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I’S FUTURE

That’s right, we took our cameras to a parking lot in Kaka`ako, an area near downtown Honolulu, to meet Hawaiian entertainer and historian Palani Vaughan.

We were intrigued when Palani told us significant things had happened there.

Of course our first thought was “in a parking lot?” until Palani explained what had occurred there happened during the reign of Kamehameha III well over a century ago.

Well, that got our attention and fast. So off we went, and when we heard the story that Palani told we weren’t disappointed, and that’s putting it mildly.

We don’t think you will be either, so be sure and catch his fascinating tale in our brand new episode all this week on Hawai`i’s award winning
Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i’s Future.

HAWAIIAN PATRIOT JON OSORIO WINS 2010 CLOPTON AWARD

Hawaiian patriot Jonathan Kamakawiwo`ole Osorio is the winner of the 2010 Clopton award.

A professor in Manoa’s Hawai`inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, Jon has devoted his life to becoming an expert on Hawai`i politics and history, music and identity, and indigenous civil rights and social justice.

His community service is imbued with the gracious spirit of `ohana that values children, elders and kupuna and allies and friends.

“Jon is one of very few professors I know who regards community service with the same passion and commitment that he gives to academic teaching and research,” says a colleague.

“His writing, teaching, speeches, advocacies on behalf of his own people and church, as well as his music of loss, love and hope have touched the minds and hearts of thousands of people across the region we call Oceania.”

“Professor Osorio is praised for his inspirational work and contributions as an insightful, caring and intellectual leader,” says Manoa Chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw.

“In every indigenous community, there are those who are called to the role of moving their communities through hardship to transformation, and he has responded to the call in such a gracious manner.

He has truly made a deep impact in the lives of so many people, as well as on numerous communities across the region.”

HAWAIIAN EDUCATOR WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

Doctorate Dissertation Recounts First Encounters Between
Nawaiians & Missionaries

Brandeisnow - April, 2010

For the third time in the past decade, a Brandeis doctoral dissertation has been judged the best in the nation by The Society of American Historians.

Noelani Arista, an Irving and Rose Crown Fellow who will be awarded her PhD at the university’s commencement in May, has won the 50th annual Allan Nevins Prize for her interdisciplinary thesis, "Histories of Unequal Measure: Euro-American Encounters with Hawaiian Governance and Law, 1793-1827," which she defended in December.

Arista joins an illustrious cast of past winners, including such luminaries as William Freehling and Mary Beth Norton. She also joins two other Brandeis Crown Fellow winners: Jeff Wiltse, PhD'02, won in 2003, and Jessica Lepler, PhD'07, in 2008.

“I feel very honored to win this distinguished prize, especially because my goal was to be able to write a dissertation about Hawai`i and early encounters between Hawai`i and the US in a way that brought Hawaiian history to the attention of the main stream of American history,” Arista said. “That a dissertation that emphasizes Native (Hawaiian) history was awarded this prize I believe is significant.”

Arista, who currently teaches in the History Department at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa, says it was her academic background in Hawaiian culture and language that made her feel at home at Brandeis. “I felt that Brandeis with its own cultural and historical traditions would be a good fit for me in this stage of my development, and I have found it to be a culturally diverse and rich place of seeking after knowledge, a Hawaiian cultural value known as `Imi Loa," Arista said.

Arista was interested in illuminating this unequal history because she felt that American approaches to the study of Hawaiian history have always been written in English language sources and methodological assumptions. It was her goal to draw upon both English and Hawaiian sources to tell a different story about the transformation of Hawaiian government during this period.

“I argue that Hawaiians have their own conceptualization and reality when it comes to history and the interpretation of events, and also make the point that not only linguistic, but cultural literacy is central to telling this history well,” Arista said.

GETTING FLACK FOR LACK OF FACTS ON VOICES OF TRUTH – ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I’S FUTURE

The new Princess Ka`iulani movie is opening in theatres to mixed reviews.

Hawai`i’s overthrow is told but with historic accuracy taking a back seat with a completely made up love story within the film.

This coming Wednesday on Free Hawai`i TV, we’ll tell you the five most important facts the movie leaves out. Don’t miss our report on what should have been in this movie – but is not.

Meanwhile, visit BarbarianPrincessMovie.com for the real story of Princess Ka`iulani and her part in attempts to save the Hawaiian Kingdom.

HAWAI`I - A CALL FOR SOVEREIGNTY SCREENED IN PASADENA, CA

Los Angeles Examiner - April 6, 2010

No matter how you look at it, the United States took control of a foreign country's government by force.

A group of American businessmen who had established operations there were instrumental in seeking the overthrow of Queen Liliu`okalani and her monarchy.

The Queen appealed to President Cleveland in a letter of protest at the time, and did not resist her house arrest for fear that violence would ensue and her people would pay the ultimate price.

A troop of armed US Marines put ashore and effected the transition of power.

President Cleveland after investigating the situation agreed that the US created an act of war against a peaceful country that had been allied with the US up to that point. He agreed to help restore the Kingdom of Hawai`i.

It has been nearly 120 years since the Queen was removed. What has happened since then is history: Hawai`i was declared a territory of the United States, and then annexed as the 50th State in the Union in 1959.

Hmm, whatever happened to the Kingdom of Hawai`i?

If the US admitted to creating a major faux pas in 1893, yet has not fulfilled its promise to restore the Kingdom of Hawai`i, where does it leave the State of Hawai`i...or is it?...a state?
