WHAT DO HAWAI`I NATIONALS WANT ?
What They Say About Themselves, Their Country & The US -
"The most common sense thing is for total independence.
We were a progressive modern nation of our time and recognized as a friendly, neutral nation within the Family of Nations, the predecessor of the League of Nations and the United Nations.
We had a democratic form of government, a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislative assembly.
The works and legacies of our monarchs are legendary and noteworthy.
Today under the American system, we are concerned about our lands, culture, people and lifestyle which has been under attack for over a hundred years.
The Kingdom of Hawai`i is not only Native Hawaiians but subjects of non-Hawaiian blood who were legitimate subjects of the Kingdom.
This racial argument is an American thing and not a Hawaiian thing.
So our concerns are well within our scope to protect all subjects of the Kingdom.
We do expect reparations and restitution from the US for the injurious damages to our nation, land and people.
The US government is well aware of this and is attempting a piecemeal settlement.
If the tables were turned around; which would you do? I'm sure it wouldn't be a hard decision.
Remember, Hawaiians never hated Americans; but only those that did harm to us and the US government for its complicity and deceit.
We were never afraid that another country would take us over; we had over twenty-four treaties with various countries but the US is the only country that broke their treaties with us."

INDEPENDENCE DAY IS COMING ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
There’s plenty of outrage and disgust at the Akaka bill, a blatant US attempt to seal the theft of the Hawaiian Nation and turn native Hawaiians into American Indians, an idea Hawai`i’s people testified overwhelmingly against nine years ago.
Since then, no hearings have been held in Hawai`i – the people’s voice has not been heard.
Many have asked what they can do to express their opposition, since the bill is being considered once again in the US congress.
Starting this Wednesday you’ll have your chance. You’ll not only be able to express your own opposition, we’ll tell you how you can help others declare their independence too.
Watch Free Hawai`i TV this coming Wednesday for details - we’ll tell you how you can say no to the Akaka bill and yes to a Free Hawai`i.
We feature this week just that - people seeking to determine their own future on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future.
MONDAY, June 29th At 6:30 PM – Maui – Akaku, Channel 53
SATURDAY, July 4th At 8:00 PM – O`ahu, `Olelo, Channel 53
“Can Of Worms – A Visit With Chris Kauwe”
Long-time Kaua`i resident Chris Kauwe is never one to leave something alone that needs resolving, whether it’s fish-pond preservation or stopping the Superferry. A cultural activist, practitioner and accomplished media producer, Chris thinks nothing of opening a can of worms and diving straight in. You’ll see what we mean - and become hooked on his message yourself. Watch It Here.
MONDAY, June 29th At 7:00 PM & FRIDAY, July 3rd At 5:30 PM – Hawai`i Island – Na Leo, Channel 53

His country never went away no matter what the history books say. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone more loyal to Hawai`i and its people than Pomai Kinney. A long-time activist Pomai movingly speaks of what his grandmother taught him about the coming changes, his own awakening, and years of resistance against the illegal US occupation. He reminds us all the Hawaiian Kingdom is very much alive right now. Watch It Here.
THURSDAY, July 2nd At 8:30 PM & FRIDAY, July 3rd At 8:30 AM - Kaua`i – Ho`ike, Channel 52
“24-Hour Volunteer – A Visit With U`ilani Kapu”
It's one thing to see a need and fill it. But U`ilani Kapu isn't your average volunteer. She dedicates all her time to the people of Maui. MAUI PRAISES NEW SOVEREIGNTY FILM
Maui Weekly - June 24, 2009
We all know the story of the annexation of Hawai`i and the arguments for and against sovereignty. We've heard and read about it ad infinitum.
However, Catherine Bauknight's film, Hawai`i, A Voice for Sovereignty, which had its world premiere at the Maui Film Festival this past Sunday, brings new insight.
Bauknight, who is also a world-renowned photographer, has produced a documentary that looks at the story with a fresh view and brings bright-eyed enthusiasm to the telling that makes the entire issue completely comprehensible and compelling....
Her telling of the imprisonment of Queen Lili`uokalani and of the attempt by the plantation owners to exterminate the Hawaiians is
heartbreaking. The photograph of the murderers imported by the plantation owners to hunt down the Hawaiians is chilling....
The consequence of the illegal annexation, according to Bauknight's film, is the subjugation and attempted eradication of the Hawaiian culture. A culture defined by the ahupua`a system, which was destroyed when Queen Lili`uokalani was overthrown.
Since that time, the film says, Hawai`i has been an occupied colony....

WHY ARE THEY AFRAID OF HOLDING AKAKA BILL HEARINGS IN HAWAI`I?
It is unfortunate that several indigenous peoples continue to be misled by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (a quasi-state entity that has been compared to the BIA) and other American establishments (i.e. CNHA and NHOs) who feel they can promote and seek federal recognition on behalf of the kānaka maoli.
Yes, there are some Native Hawaiians who desire federal recognition. For the most part, these Native Hawaiians have some form of self-interest (i.e. OHA trustee or employee, NHO president, Executive Director of non-profit receiving funds designated for native and part-Hawaiians) that will be expanded through federal recognition, while the majority of kānaka maoli continue to live in poverty, suffer from poor health, and lack educational opportunities.
Contrary to the establishments' messages that kānaka maoli support and favor federal recognition; thousands of kānaka maoli do not support nor desire federal recognition.
Instead, these kānaka maoli desire a "fair, free, and impartial process" to determine our future without being forced to consent to federal recognition that would automatically remove independence as an option.
Furthermore, it is undemocratic that requested hearings by kānaka maoli on the Akaka Bill (H.B. 2314, S.B. 1011) have not been acknowledged and arranged.
Kānaka maoli have never been allowed to present testimony on these measures. In 2000, two days of hearings were held on O`ahu Island, all other hearings were canceled.
As a kānaka maoli, I humbly request that you support democratic hearings for the kānaka maoli to voice their concerns about the Akaka Bill and a democratic process that is "fair, free, and impartial" that will allow kānaka maoli to determine their future, rather than giving the Akaka Bill your blanket support.

YOU CAN HELP STOP THE AKAKA BILL
Make Your Voice Heard Today
Help stop the Akaka bill today by submitting testimony to the US congress.
Testimony must be submitted by this Thursday, June 25, 2009, 11am (HST.)
Cut and paste the example below. Email to the House Natural Resources Committee to teresa.bravo@mail.house.gov and also fax to (202) 225-1931.
Please Note - If emailing your testimony, it must be in a Word or PDF format attached to your email.
Here's The Sample Testimony To Use -
June 20, 2009
The Honorable Nick J. Rahall II, Chairman
The Honorable Doc Hastings, Ranking Member
House Committee on Natural Resources
U.S. House of Representatives
1324 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
RE - OPPOSITION TO H.R. 2314 - Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2009
Dear Honorable Rahall, Honorable Hastings, and Members of the House Committee on Natural Resources,
I thank you for allowing me to submit this testimony in OPPOSITION to H.R. 2314, which seeks to express the policy of the United States regarding the United States relationship with Native Hawaiians and to provide a process of the recognition by the United States of the Native Hawaiian governing entity.
I OPPOSE H.R. 2314: Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2009 because -
Lack of hearings held in Hawai`i that would allow the Hawaiian people to present testimony on the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act.
In 2000, only two (2) days of hearings were held on O`ahu Island. All other hearings were cancelled.
The current and past bills addressing the United States relationship with Native Hawaiians to provide a process of the recognition by the United States of the Native Hawaiian governing entity were subsequently redrafted and amendments were added with no input or testimony from the Hawaiian people.
Therefore no hearings have ever been held in Hawai`i on the current legislation before the 2009 Congress.
The Hawaiian people seek the right to a fair and democratic process that includes hearings on H.R. 2314 throughout the islands that comprise the state of Hawai`i.
For 9 years, Hawaiians have requested that the island wide hearings be rescheduled so that the hundreds of Hawaiians who want to testify can be included and their concerns heard.
H.R. 2314 disenfranchises the Hawaiian people by ensuring that persons residing on the US continent, many of whom have no contact or relationship with Hawaiian culture or Hawai`i, will control the electoral process.
By including a huge American continental population, the drafters of H.R. 2314 have guaranteed that Hawaiians of Molokai, Maui, Kaua`i, Hawai`i Island and Lana`i will be outvoted at their own Constitutional Convention.
Most importantly, the Hawai`i based native Hawaiians such as Hawaiian Homesteaders who are the sole beneficiaries of the Ceded Lands and Hawaiian Homelands trusts will be outvoted by a margin of 10 to 1.
The effort being pursued in the US Congress violates the most fundamental principles of democracy and human rights.
In the 9 years during which time the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act has evolved, the Hawai`i Federal Delegation made several concessions to previous federal and state administrations, the goal of which is to maintain the political status of the Hawaiian peoples as wards of the United States and state of Hawai`i, and to ensure that the vast land and fiscal resources of the Hawaiian people are utilized for US federal and state priorities.
The Administration of President Barrack Obama came to office promising open government dedicated to truth and justice for all peoples. I call upon the Obama Administration, and Democrats in the US Congress to live with the integrity of their own words.
I call for the Congressional Committee to hold hearings on the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act in Hawai`i to provide the Hawaiian peoples their right to participate in the process and to seek amendments to the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act.
Therefore, I strongly urge you to OPPOSE H.R. 2314 until Congressional hearings are scheduled and held in Hawai`i on all islands, and in all States on the US continent where a significant population of Hawaiians reside, in order to provide the Hawaiian peoples their right to a democratic fair, free, and impartial process of self-determination and to empower them with the ability to determine the culturally appropriate mechanism for their own self-governance.

AKAKA BILL = FALSE PROMISES & RACISM
Maui News - June 16, 2009
When will the misinformation ("Akaka Bill a vital step," Today's Editorial, June 13) stop about how great the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2009 is?
The writer, as do many proponents, contends - "It is only possible to create an equitable, honorable and peaceful future for Hawaiians and those who support them" through the passage of S. 1011. The written facts prove otherwise.
Between the legalese, fancy play and placement of inspiring words in this bill, if passed by the United States Congress it will have manufactured the illusion Hawaiians are giving consent to the terms in this bill.
The "Native Hawaiians" in this bill are subject to the definition in The Hawaiian Homes Act of 1920, Section 201 - any descendant of not less than one-half part of the blood of the races inhabiting the Hawaiian Islands previous to 1778.
Aside from the blood quantum language (genocidal), how come the United States government does not legally recognize the years and accomplishments after 1778? No matter how pleasant to our ears the Akaka Bill is played, it clearly resounds with false promises and racism....

PREVIEW OF LIFE UNDER THE AKAKA BILL
US Supreme Court Says Tribes Have No Religious Rights
Flagstaff, AZ - On Monday, June 8th 2009, the Supreme Court denied the petition by Tribes & Environmental groups to hear a case to protect the holy San Francisco Peaks.
For nearly a decade, the Save the Peaks Coalition, Tribes, Environmental groups, and community members led an effort to stop the Snowbowl ski area’s plan to expand it’s development on the Peaks, and make snow from treated sewage effluent.
The ski resort operates on the Holy Mountain through a lease by the United States Forest Service, which sanctioned the proposed development in 2004.
According to Howard Shanker, attorney for the Navajo Nation, the Havasupai Tribe, the Yavapai-Apache Nation, the White Mountain Apache Tribe, Flagstaff Activist Network, the Center for Biological Diversity and others, and former congressional candidate, “It is unfortunate that the Supreme Court denied our petition for certiorari.
"The Court’s denial serves to perpetuate injustice and the application of bad law regarding the rights of Native Americans to protect sacred and holy sites....
...The Court dismissed Plaintiffs' religious beliefs as calling them mere "damaged spiritual feelings."
Mere Damaged Spiritual Feelings???

THE PROS ARE CONS ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

An obvious act of desperation, the whole point is to confuse and misdirect.
Visit StopAkakaBill.com for the latest news on how you can help stop the attempted theft of the Hawaiian Nation.

AKAKA BILL OPPOSITION GROWS

By Mark Niesse - Associated Press Writer
HONOLULU (AP) — Opposition to a proposed Native Hawaiian government comes from those who fear race-based privileges and Hawaiians who believe it would forfeit their 116-year-old claims to independence....
...Opponents say its approval would perpetuate wrongs rooted in the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy.
"We're continuing in a situation of occupation, which is promoted by the Akaka Bill supporters," said Kawika Liu, a Hawaiian physician who favors independence.
"To be a Hawaiian independent nation is not an option with the Akaka Bill. It replicates a colonial mentality."

NATIVE AMERICAN CHIEF OPPOSES AKAKA BILL
Chief Tecumseh Brown Eagle of The Erie Indian Moundbuilders Tribal Nation today issued his Tribe's opposition to the proposed Akaka Bill now before the US Congress.
"Native Hawaiians are not American Indians!
To label Native Hawaiians as American Indians flies in the face of historical fact, truth, and the rule of law.
It also undermines the inherent right of all to retain their national identity.
If the national identity of Native Hawaiians can be wiped away with the stroke of a pen then all people everywhere may face the same fate....
...To enact the Akaka Bill would continue this abuse of the US Constitution and support the unconscionable illegal overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai`i in 1893....
...I urge everyone to contact their US Senator and oppose this legislation."

HAWAI`I NATIONAL SPEAKS OUT AGAINST THE AKAKA BILL
Dear Congresspersons,
I entreat all Congresspeople to Oppose S.1011/H.R. 2314.
...There has not been any public hearings on all the islands except on O`ahu since the year 2000 and since then there have been many amendments to the bill.
A small elite group of Hawaiian-Americans have input while the rest of the Hawai`i nationals have been shut out of the process.
We rebuke the wording of the bill and contents which white-wash the facts.
One cannot cull a portion of the Hawai`i nationals and relegate them to a tribal indigenous group of the US while ignoring the rest of the Hawai`i nationals not of native Hawaiian blood. We want to review the final bill for approval before it goes up for a vote by U.S. Congress.
The US expressly recognizes Hawai`i's unique circumstances and is trying to fit it within their system. You must first prove that Hawai`i is legitimately part of the US.
Legally and lawfully, the US cannot produce the required treaty of annexation in which to make a claim of ownership nor can they show the consent of the people because of the memorial and Ku`e petitions of 1897 which demonstrates the Hawai`i nationals' disdain for the US dishonorable actions.
You are the thief fencing its stolen goods unto itself to make it look legitimate and the wishes of the Hawai`i nationals.
What is so difficult to comprehend? Free Hawai`i!

HAWAI`I ELDER SPEAKS OUT ON AKAKA BILL
''The Akaka Bill defines Native Hawaiians as indigenous to the United States, and therefore, like American Indians and Alaskan Natives, wards of a domestic dependent nation under the plenary power of the US Congress.
We object strongly to that.
Our people never relinquished our claims to our inherent sovereignty over our national lands.''
Kekuni Blaisdell - Hawaiian Sovereignty Leader and Kupuna/Elder

US CONGRESS BEGINS DELIBERATIONS ON AKAKA BILL THURSDAY

Adding insult to injury, the US congress will begin deliberations on the Akaka bill this Thursday, Kamehameha day.
The House Natural Resources committee will hear the bill.
If passed the Akaka bill would legitimize the illegal US usurpation of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, complete the theft of all Hawaiian lands, and remove any legal recourse for Hawaiian Nationals to right these wrongs.
US President Barack Obama has said he will sign the bill if it reaches his desk.

THOSE WHO LOVE THEIR LAND VS THOSE OUT TO STEAL IT ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE
Hawai`i - A Voice For Sovereignty had its film debut in Washington DC’s brand new Capitol Visitor’s Center Thursday night.
Despite a heavy last minute boycott spearheaded by Hawai`i’s US congressional delegation and the cancellation of funding by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the premier was well attended.
The film’s message drove home a powerful message – the people of Hawai`i are inextricably tied to the land and their love for it.
With the reintroduction of the Akaka bill in the US congress this last week, it’s no wonder the Inouye, Akaka and OHA crowd tried to get the film stopped.
The Akaka bill would not only extinguish the Hawaiian Nation, it would also steal that very land the people of Hawai`i feel so connected to.
Examples abound of people who love their land in action to protect it, and our new Voices Of Truth show, filmed on Maui, features U`ilani Kapu.
It’s no exaggeration at all to call her Maui’s 24-hour volunteer. See for yourself why this week on Voices Of Truth – One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future.
