"HAWAI`I - A VOICE FOR SOVEREIGNTY" 
AIRS IN US NATIONALLY ON PBS























Maui Sun - February 22, 2015

A documentary film entitled Hawaiʻi A Voice for Sovereignty will be broadcast nationally on PBS stations affiliated with the First Nations Experience Network.

The film aired in eight states on Sunday night with a rebroadcast planned for March 22, 2015.  The latest broadcast schedule does not include Hawaiʻi. 

The award winning documentary focuses on the Native Hawaiian struggle to reconnect to the land and to obtain sovereign rights after the illegal takeover of by US businessmen and military on Jan. 17, 1893.

On November 23, 1993, President William Jefferson Clinton signed United States Public Law 103-150, also known as the “Apology Resolution,” acknowledging the 100th anniversary of the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi and offering an apology to Native Hawaiians on behalf of the United States.

In the film, photojournalist and producer Catherine Bauknight explores the Native Hawaiian culture and the social, economic and ecological issues that have developed since the overthrow.

“I have witnessed firsthand what happens when a small, sustainable society is separated from their land, fresh water and ocean resources and then converted for profit by western powers,” said Bauknight in a press release statement.

“Today, with over 8 million tourists a year crowding their small and ecologically-fragile islands, the Hawaiians are disconnected from their own land and suffer some of the highest rates per capita of poverty, homelessness, health issues related to diet and incarceration in the state. My goal is to continue to share the story to assist the Hawaiian’s ongoing struggle for sovereign rights and their efforts as stewards of the land to protect what’s left from further destruction.”

The documentary was initially released in 2012, and has since been shown internationally at various festivals, screenings, and events.

It was recently honored with the “Best Global Documentary Film Creating Change” during the Pacific Talent Film Festival in Los Angeles, California.  Here in the islands, it earned the Audience Award for Best Hawaiʻi Film at the Maui Film Festival.  Other accolades include the Mana Wairoa Award from the Maori Film Festival, and the Best Global Documentary Film Creating Change from the Pacific Talent Film Festival.

The soundtrack for the film features some of Maui’s talented musical artists including:Richard Hoʻopiʻi, George Kahumoku, Willie K, Keʻeaumoku Kapu, Charles Kaʻupu, Kealiʻi Blaisdell, and Wilmont Kahaialiʻi.

WHY ITʻS TIME TO END THE ILLEGAL US OCCUPATION OF HAWAI`I















Native Hawaiians constitute roughly 22 per cent of the state population, but they represent 54 per cent of the prison population.

They also have the lowest per capita income, the highest poverty rate and the shortest lifespan of any ethnic group in Hawai`i.

Hawai`i public school students receive very poor education by any standard of measurement. They consistently rank among the lowest of any state in test scores.

Most of the bright students who manage to learn something in spite of the handicapped school system leave Hawai`i for foreign colleges and careers.

Tens of thousands of residents have no medical insurance at all.

In some cases, the lives of the working poor are worse than the unemployed.

OHA CLAIMS "HANDS-OFF" IN HAWAIIAN CON CON

Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustees, standing alongside some of their critics, announced Thursday they will help facilitate and fund steps to "build a Hawaiian nation" once the Native Hawaiian Roll is complete but stay neutral in the effort.

The Native Hawaiian Roll Commission has gathered 170,000 names for an official registry of Hawaiians so they can come together to form a governing entity. It is in the process of confirming their ancestry.

Some Hawaiians have refused to sign up, saying it would relegate Hawaiians to the status of a Native American tribe and preclude the option of independence.

Trustees emphasized that the outcome is not preordained and that the model of government will be left up to those who participate. As part of its effort to bring people together, OHA called for the Native Hawaiian Roll to be reopened to give folks another chance to sign up.

The deadline was in January.

"This is different from past OHA efforts," said trustee Haunani Apoliona, chair-woman of an ad hoc governance committee. "We will remain neutral and ensure that the people can provide meaningful input on the process and that the outcomes reflect the will of the Native Hawaiian people."

"Simply put, our commitment is to provide support by letting Native Hawaiians determine the desired outcome," she said.

OHA trustees were joined at a news conference by a range of Hawaiian leaders, including some who have been critical of the agency or the commission. Among those attending were Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele, a pioneer in the sovereignty movement who leads Puuhonua o Waimanalo, and Molokai activist Walter Ritte.

"The words are good, the door is open, so I'm hoping," Ritte said afterward. "I want to see the action.I'm hoping OHA is going to be able to bridge the gap and connect with their community. What I really like about what happened today is OHA now is willing to accept and celebrate the diversity within the community instead of trying to say who's right and who's wrong."

The commission, a separate entity funded by the state, plans to release a draft registry this month to allow changes and challenges before the certified list is published. The draft will include the name, year of birth and city of residence. The list incorporated previous registries of Native Hawaiians, with a provision to opt out.

Once the roll is published, the commission is supposed to dissolve in June, leaving it up to those on the registry to decide on their path toward self-government.

According to a statement from OHA, the next steps could involve an independent election of delegates to convene a Governance Aha, or gathering, where delegates could propose the form and principles for a governing entity.

When the commission disbands, OHA will accept custody of the roll and use it as a basis for verifying eligibility to vote or run in delegate elections or vote in any referendum on the form of the governing entity.

"OHA will not undermine the future Governing Entity's inherent right to determine its membership criteria," the agency said.

Former U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, who led the battle for federal recognition in Congress, attended the event. Also there was kumu hula Hina Wong-Kalu, who has not signed the roll, but came to support OHA's inclusive approach.

"I'm all for positive working rapport with all Hawaiians," she said. "But my primary question is, If I or any other Hawaiian does not sign with the roll commission, what is the implication for the inclusion of our views in moving forward?"

Kamanaopono Crabbe, OHA's ka pouhana, or chief executive officer, said the amount of funding OHA will provide has not been determined. The agency will team up with entities such as the alii trusts, royal societies and other Native Hawaiian institutions.

HAWAI`I FAKE STATE PLAYS GAME WITH HAWAIIAN NAMES

A Hawai`i woman says local officials are trying to get her to change her lengthy last name because it exceeds the number of characters allowed on state-issued identification cards.

Janice “Lokelani” Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele was able to convince the governor's office to issue a special ID that could fit her entire surname, but when it expired earlier this year, she was right back where she started.

The problem, Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele says, is that her driver's license was printed with just an abbreviated version of her family name — her first and middle name were completely left off.

As a result, getting stopped by police becomes an even bigger hassle than it normally is.

The two-card solution worked well until she received her new ID in the mail, and, just like her driver's license, it too was missing large chunks of her name.

Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele phoned the county to see what could be done, but was instead advised to change her last name to make it easier on herself and everyone else.

"And I went, ‘How disrespectful of the Hawaiian people,'" Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele recalled.

Another reason Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele refuses to revert back to her maiden name is that she considers "Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele" a living link to her late husband.

In an email she sent a tool supplier a few years back, Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele explains that her last name was also her husband's whole name -

"You see, to some people in the world, your name is everything. If I say my name to an elder Hawaiian (kupuna), they know everything about my husband's family going back many generations... just from the name. 

"When the name is sliced up, changed or altered it distorts the intention and meaning that the name represents. 

"Unfortunately, many people have been shamed into hiding their real names because they don't fit in with the dominant culture's lack of respect for the name."

Hawaiians have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.

By 1805 that number had been halved.

By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.

Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

And they make up 37 percent of the state's homeless population, according to a 2003 survey.
