EFFECTS OF OVER A CENTURY OF U.S. OCCUPATION ON NATIVE HAWAIIANS
The Hawaiian people have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.
Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.
At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.
By 1805 that number had been halved.
By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.
Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.
According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.
But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.
Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
And they make up 37 percent of the state's homeless population, according to a 2003 survey.

Pacific Business News reports citing an “uncertain economic climate,” Hawai`i Superferry said Tuesday it is postponing planned service of a second ship to the Big Island.
Superferry President and CEO Tom Fargo said the one-year delay will defer more than $10 million in startup costs and allow the company to “maintain our sound financial position.”

In the months since the Office of Hawaiian Affairs took control of Waimea Valley, the agency's management of the historic area has come under scrutiny and sparked debate about whether it was a positive step....
Opponents say OHA is losing money and making poor management decisions, and believe the agency is trying to turn Waimea Valley into a popular visitor attraction like the Polynesian Cultural Center at the expense of cultural and natural resources.
...Jaime Raduenzel, who quit her post as program manager in mid-August, said in an e-mail to OHA Trustee Rowena Akana that management of the valley has been incompetent and that managers have been more concerned with "how to best entertain the tourists by having some smiling Hawaiians on display."

But patience was rewarded yesterday when the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands awarded 205 families home lots in its East Kapolei project.
Vivian Perreira, 73, had been waiting for 51 years.
Today, she has four grown sons and several grandchildren. She plans to offer her home lot to her youngest son.

I, Lili`uokalani of Hawai`i, by the will of God named heir apparent on the tenth day of April, A.D. 1877, and by the grace of God Queen of the Hawaiian Islands on the seventeenth day of January, A.D. 1893, do hereby protest against the ratification of a certain treaty, which, so I am informed, has been signed at Washington by Messrs. Hatch, Thurston, and Kinney, purporting to cede those Islands to the territory and dominion of the United States. I declare such a treaty to be an act of wrong toward the native and part-native people of Hawai`i, an invasion of the rights of the ruling chiefs, in violation of international rights both toward my people and toward friendly nations with whom they have made treaties, the perpetuation of the fraud whereby the constitutional government was overthrown, and, finally, an act of gross injustice to me....

SUPERFERRY TO BE STOPPED AT LAST?
The Hawai`i Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal seeking to invalidate a state law that allowed Hawai`i Superferry to begin operation last year without an environmental impact statement.
The court said it was transferring the case from the lower Intermediate Court of Appeals and would schedule oral arguments because it involves a matter "of imperative or fundamental public importance." A date for arguments was not announced.
The Sierra Club, Maui Tomorrow and the Kahului Harbor Coalition requested the transfer as part of their appeal of a Maui Circuit Court ruling in November that upheld the new law known as Act 2.
The last time the three groups were allowed to present oral arguments before the Supreme Court, they won an uncommonly swift judgment that brought a halt to Hawai`i Superferry service.

HAWAIIAN PATRIOTS IN ACTION ON VOICES OF TRUTH – ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I’S FUTURE
Yesterday on FreeHawaii.Info we posted video footage of Kanaka Maoli patriot Andre Perez confronting an arrest warrant resulting from an attempt to prevent desecration of ancestral graves on private property at Naue, Kaua`i.
Andre’s action in Honolulu was taking place at the same moment fellow protestors were in a Kaua`i courtroom.
As the entire world is now witnessing the utter failure of the US financial system, that of placing profits before people, the moral bankruptcy of the illegal occupation of Hawai`i is also exposed by brave patriots such as these who continue to stand up for the Hawaiian Kingdom and it’s citizens, both past, present and future.
Tomorrow FreeHawaii.Info is proud to present part two of Andre’s action.

Fake State Government Tries To Keep Truth Of Land Ownership Hidden
Hawai`i state attorney general Mark Bennett should be careful in pursuing that route of the resolution (the Apology Bill) being symbolic. It may turn around and bite him on the arse!
If a resolution is symbolic or a non-binding wish-list, then the Newlands Resolution (internal US law used to illegally occupy Hawai`i) is also non-binding and symbolic.
The Ku`e Petitions on the other hand, would be considered a plebiscite or referendum of the Hawaiian Subjects which holds more strength and power than a foreign resolution.
I send my personal resolution of best wishes and eviction notice for the US to de-occupy our country, the friendly, neutral, sovereign nation of the Kingdom of Hawai`i.

LIHU`E, KAUA`I - Dozens of Hawaiians and their supporters testified yesterday in tears and with shouts and voices crackling with emotion before the Kaua`i Ni`ihau Burial Council....
"The state has made a mistake, a big, major mistake," said Jim Medeiros, a Big Island resident. "Once you start building on the graveyards, it will become a (precedent) in the state...."
Joseph Brescia, who bought the land in 2000 from actor Sylvester Stallone, has received permits from the county and state to build the home and has already poured the fittings for the home and a concrete cap for the five burials underneath the home....
"The building should not be there, period," said council member Barbara Say yesterday. "I didn't know they were going to be cemented. ... What is wrong with this man?"

AN OPEN LETTER TO OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS CHAIR HAUNANI APOLIONA
Challenger Colin Kippen Asks "Why Did You Just Sit There?"
Earlier this year, the Hawaii State Supreme Court ruled in OHA’s favor by placing a freeze on the selling or transfer of ceded lands until there is a settlement between the state government and
Hawaiians.
Today the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear an appeal of this ruling, again placing our rights to our `aina in jeopardy.
OHA Chair Haunani Apoliona was fully aware of the possibility of this appeal, which was brought forth by Attorney General Mark Bennett on behalf of Governor Linda Lingle and the State of Hawai`i....
Apoliona sat mute on this issue even though at the time she was engaged in secret talks with the Governor and Attorney General to give millions to the Governor's Department of Hawaiian Homelands, to waive future native Hawaiian rights as requested by the Attorney General in their failed ceded lands deal with OHA, and to lobby to kill a bill calling for an audit of her spending by the State legislature.
Apoliona has also spent tens of millions of dollars to produce and run slick Kau Inoa commercials and to hire high priced lobbyists to do her bidding where it suits her political agenda.
Why wasn't protecting this ruling a priority for her? Why didn't she attempt to educate the public about the importance of enforcing this moratorium on selling ceded lands so that a full and fair reconciliation could have been reached with Native Hawaiians before those lands were forever lost?
Why has she not rallied the people to protect the Apology Resolution passed by the Congress, upon which the favorable State Supreme Court ruling was based?
Hawaiians should not be in this position now. This was a huge lost opportunity. This is another example of a lack of diplomacy, leadership, and statesmanship by Apoliona to the detriment of all Hawaiians.

US SUPREME COURT CLAIMS AUTHORITY TO RULE ON HAWAIIAN KINGDOM LANDS
The US Supreme Court decided Wednesday to hear a case that will determine if the state of Hawai`i can sell or exchange land owned by the Hawaiian Kingdom or have to wait until the claims of Native Hawaiians are resolved through the Akaka bill.
Of course foreign nations have no real jurisdiction on sovereign Hawaiian Kingdom lands.
The Hawai`i state Supreme Court recently decided the state has no right to dispose of these "ceded lands" until it recognizes the Hawaiian Kingdom.
If left standing, that ruling would ultimately collapse the house of cards known as the "state of Hawai`i" and bring an end to the illegal US occupation.
