HERE'S WHAT'S IN STORE FOR HAWAI`I'S CHILDREN IF U.S. FEDERAL RECOGNITION IS IMPOSED UPON NATIVE HAWAIIANS

Conditions for children called a "crime" - From Native Times.com

A recent survey from American Indian housing directors shows that Native children are less likely to get enough sleep and finish their homework and are more likely to suffer from communicable illnesses and live in overcrowded and substandard housing conditions. The NAIHC blames a dearth of federal funding.

“It’s a crime that the government spends more money for health care for prisoners than it does for Native Americans,” said NAIHC Executive Dierctor Gary Gordon, citing figures that show current federal spending at $3,803 a year per inmate as compared to $1,914 for each individual tribal member.

The survey showed increased cases of communicable diseases such as colds, flu, and skin outbreaks, with 77 percent of respondents making a direct correlation between those conditions and overcrowded housing.

The questionnaire handed out to tribal housing directors also showed that black mold was causing such severe problems that some children are wearing respirators to bed at night.

“We fear for the next generation,” said NAIHC Chairman Chester Carl. “The children do not have a bed to call their own on many reservations.”Bureau of Indian Affairs head Dave Anderson said the survey rings true.

"The observations by this group are very accurate," Anderson told The Associated Press. "As Indian people, we have been almost like a Third World developing nation. It's unfortunate that America's first people probably experience the bottom rung of every social dysfunction there is.”"Very few places in our nation have children hurting as much as on our Indian reservations,” Carl said.

“It is up to the federal government to uphold the trust responsibility-an obligation it has made to tribes through treaties and laws-and make good on promises ratified centuries ago. We, as Native people, will also continue to work together to make a better life for our children."

FEDERAL RECOGNITION PALES NEXT TO INDEPENDENCE !

The Maui News -Sunday, May 22, 2005

Can you imagine everyone seeking independence, everyone setting themselves free from slavery from this corrupted system that runs our lives here in Hawai`i?

There would be no state or county. That means there would be an independent state or nation again.

We, the people, would be able to control our destiny.

Land wouldn't be sold to bigwigs. House prices would come down so our people would be able to live here.

How can we sell ourselves out again by accepting federal recognition and go along with that nation-within-a-nation thing? This would be no good for us or our children.

There is a way to freedom....

ALOHA MAI! - WELCOME
IF YOU'RE VISITNG FreeHawaii.Info FOR THE FIRST TIME!

Free Hawai'i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent, sovereign nation status, like it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.

In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.

Did you know -

98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow!

Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai'i is in Hawaiian hands. Over 60% is in non-Hawaiian hands. A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai'i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians! Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai'i.

Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai'i today.

Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators of any ethnic group in the US. Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile of any ethnic group in the US.

Descendants of the Hawaiian Nation want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.

In other words, they want the same things that most others already take for granted!

NATIVE HAWAIIANS SPEAK AT UNITED NATIONS

Pacific Region Influence Grows At Fourth Permanent Forum On Indigenous Issues

UN Headquarters, NY - Native Hawaiians and Pacific Region representatives join other Indigenous Peoples from throughout the world at the United Nations for the fourth annual Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

The Koani Foundation, a Kaua`i based unity organization, is participating with other Native Hawaiian Non-Governmental Organizations in articulating and addressing human rights, environmental, economic and social issues at the international forum.

“We are treated like outcasts in our own homeland,” remarked Koani Foundation board member Kai`opua Fyfe. ”However, our Nation survives today despite more than a century of belligerent occupation, forced assimilation, and cultural oppression”.

The Permanent Forum has designated the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, and universal primary education for Indigenous Peoples as the focus for this year’s gathering.

The Koani Foundation is presenting recommendations on human rights and universal education for Pacific Region Indigenous Peoples.

“We Hawaiian Nationals are proclaiming our identities; reclaiming our heritage, our land, resources and rights,” Fyfe stated. “We will never accept second class citizenship in our Hawai`i homeland.”

In addition to Polynesian Triangle members Hawai’i, Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Rapa Nui (Easter Island), other Pacific Region participants include representatives from Australia, Fiji, Papua, Melanesia and Micronesia

The forum, which runs for two weeks through May 27th, was established in 2000 at the recommendation of the UN Commission on Human Rights.

HOW HEALTHY ARE HAWAIIANS TODAY?

Hawaiians suffer the worst health profile in Hawai'i.

Between 1980 and 1990, while rates of death from heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes decreased for non-Hawaiians, they increased, sometimes dramatically, for Hawaiians.

Below 1 year of age, the Hawaiian death rate is more than double the overall state average.

Between 1 and 4 years of age, it is triple the state figure, and so on into adulthood.

Just under 20 percent of the population, we suffer 75 percent of the deaths for persons less than 18 years of age.

HAWAI'I NATIONALS SHOULD STAND AGAINST FEDERAL RECOGNITION

The Honolulu Advertiser - Sunday, May 8th

I hope the Hawai'i nationals will stand against the Akaka bill.

Why give the United States the whole pie so it can dish out the crumbs to us?

Under the international laws of occupation, theUnited States is obligated to ensure the welfareand rights of Hawaiian subjects, regardless of ethnicity.

It's a nation that's being violated, not one ethnic group, albeit the Hawaiian kingdom is of kanaka maoli [Native Hawaiian] origin, culture and society.

Common sense dictates this to be a national issue, not a predisposed archaic tribal group.

The choice is to remain Hawai'i nationals or to be Hawaiian Americans; so step out of the delusional U.S.A. box and recognize who we really are.

The United States has already recognized us as a nation and needs us to recognize them as our lord and master.

HERE'S THE EFFECT OF OVER A CENTURY OF US OCCUPATION IN HAWAI'I ON NATIVE HAWAIIANS -

The Hawaiian people, have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands. By 1805 that number had been halved. By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawaii and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.

Although they only make up about 20 percent of the
state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population and 37 percent of the state's homeless population.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO FREEHAWAII.INFO ?

Free Hawai'i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent, sovereign nation status, like it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.

In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.

DID YOU KNOW ? -

"Don't condemn our lands, condemn the wrongs that have been done to us!"
