KEY DATE IN HAWAI`I HISTORY OBSERVED

Ka La Ho`iho`i Ea Is Hawaiian Independence Day

Two events are planned for Sunday to commemorate the day in 1843 when the Hawaiian nation re-established its independence following five months of British military occupation.

Ka La Ho'iho'i Ea - Sovereignty Restoration Day - was a national holiday in the days of the monarchy. The occasion has gained renewed significance in recent years for Native Hawaiians and others who seek national independence from the United States.

As has been the custom for more than a decade, a gathering of independence groups and their supporters will lower the American flag and raise
Hawaiian Kingdom banners at Thomas Square.

It was at the site in 1843 that Adm. Richard Thomas, British Pacific fleet commander, ordered the lowering of the British flag after condemning and
withdrawing the military occupation headed by another British sailor, Lord George Paulet.

Kekuni Blaisdell, among the chief organizers for the Thomas Square event, said it is important for Native Hawaiians to ponder the events of 1843. Blaisdell and others want the United States to "withdraw from the illegal occupation" of Hawai'i.

They oppose the Akaka bill, now stalled in Congress, which provides a process for Native Hawaiians to be federally recognized.

"Britain recognized its wrong - the illegal occupation of our homeland," Blaisdell said. The United States in 1993 issued an apology for its role in the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, but unlike the British, has not withdrawn from Hawai'i, he said.

AKAKA SWINDLE !

Someone once said: "If you get them to ask the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers."

The confusion over the Hawaiian sovereignty issue is the result of an elaborate, protracted campaign by the United States and the State of Hawai`i to conceal and obfuscate their illegal occupation of Hawai`i, and to try to give it a legitimate face.

To accomplish their ends, they manipulate the debate by posing wrong questions.

The occupying powers have deliberately and slyly shifted the question away from 'What redress is called for concerning the theft of a nation?' to that of 'How can we preserve race-based welfare programs?'

Even though these are two completely different questions, the Akaka Bill pretends to address the former by answering the latter.

This is a classic swindle.

The Akaka bill is an elaborate scheme using the native-Hawaiian/indigenous-people/Indian-tribe/nation-within-a-nation/self-determination
screen to swindle the Hawaiian public, the U.S. Congress the American people and the rest of the world into thinking something significant is being accomplished.


When actually, it is just another attempt in the 112-year effort to legitimize and secure the illegal occupation of Hawai`i.

If the Akaka Bill is the answer, what was the question?

FEDERAL RECOGNITION CREATES PHONY NATION

...We would be forced to live with endless repetitions of a fake Hawaiian culture pushed in our faces if the Akaka bill becomes the law of the land: the phony, nauseatingly stupid, missionary hula; the castrati-falsetto hymn praising colonialist princes and princesses; senseless rewrites in Christian versions of Hawaiian myths as fairytales.

It's a kind of modern-day racist minstrel show with Hawai`i's numerous ethnic minorities costumed as Native Hawaiians and putting on demeaning skits...

A lie repeated often enough ends up becoming a kind of hyper-reality.

Existing law long ignored versus the lie made into new law by politicians serving the same special interests that have for too long held Hawai`i's economy in a monopoly death grip...

Like one of those charity schemes wherein they pretend to raise money for a good cause but give only a couple of pennies on the dollar to them, the Akaka bill is one of the most outrageous political con games ever - with newly minted fake Native Hawaiians serving as dumb shills to leverage increased government funds for yet more deadhead bureaucrats...

NATIVE HAWAIIANS SPEAK OUT AGAINST FEDERAL RECOGNITION

Group Is Pleased Akaka Bill Is Stalled Once Again

A newly-formed Native Hawaiian group called Hui Pu is pleased the so-called Akaka Bill is stalled in Congress again.

Hui Pu members gathered at `Iolani Palace Wednesday to voice opposition to the Akaka Bill.

`Iolani Palace is a symbol of the Hawaiian monarchy.

"The Akaka Bill will attempt to empower the Department of the Interior to act as our sovereign and we all know that is completely bogus," stated Andre Perez, Hui Pu corodinator.

"The Akaka bill fails to address our sovereign heritage as an independent and free people."

Members of Hui Pu criticized the Akaka bill for not giving Native Hawaiians 100 percent autonomy in governing a sovereign Hawaiian nation.

"Unfortunately, the Akaka Bill does not go far enough," said Hui Pu member Moanikeala Akaka.

"The problem with the bill is we can not trust America to begin with - they are not trust worthy," said Bumpy Kanahele, a long time Hawaiian sovereignty activist who is lending support to Hui Pu.

Hui Pu has gathered over 1,000 signatures from people against the Akaka bill. It wants to dispel the notion that most Hawaiians support the bill.

"I know the majority don't," said Kanahele.

WASHINGTON - The Akaka Bill will not get its expected vote in the Senate this week, and its prospects are uncertain as Republican opposition to the native Hawaiian recognition measure
continued to grow....

The Senate adjourns for its August recess on July 29 and will not return until after Labor Day.

Senator Inouye said he is worried the Senate is likely to be spending its time debating John Roberts' Supreme Court nomination, military spending and appropriations bills, and other controversial issues when it resumes in September.

"I can see myself being pushed into the background," Inouye said.

Ikaika Hussey, a spokesman for the Hawaiian sovereignty coalition Hui Pu, which also opposes the measure, said he also hopes that a delay would result in more study of the bill.

Hui Pu members believe the Akaka Bill does not reflect the views of many native Hawaiians.

"The most important thing is that we use the time that the delay is creating to really push the Senate to hold hearings in Hawaii on the bill," Hussey said.

"It's a minimum requirement as a democracy."

WHO WINS IN A FREE AND INDEPENDENT HAWAI'I ? - EVERYONE !

One of the biggest lies perpetuated today is that when Hawai`i achieves nationhood once again it will be at the expense of everyone else.

But no one will be kicked out; their businesses seized or their homes and property confiscated.

Instead, everyone, Hawaiians and all others, will be citizens of the sovereign and independent Nation of Hawai`i. The Hawaiian Nation included people of many ethnic backgrounds that were loyal citizens before the illegal overthrow and it will be so again.

The truth is a sovereign Hawaiian nation will need the contributions and talents of all of its citizens to remain viable in the world. Hawaiians would be no better than the very supremacists that overthrew and occupied them were they to divide people by race.

Hawaiians have always been inclusive, not exclusive.

How would this be accomplished politically given a civil war resulted the last time a state tried to leave the US?

Unlike the southern US states, the Kingdom of Hawai`i and its citizens never agreed to become part of the United States in the first place. Therefore a move for Hawai`i to secede from the US would be both unnecessary and inappropriate.

Much like removing the top coat of paint to reveal the one underneath, the US Congress, after consultation between Hawaiians and the US at the level of state to state, could simply enact a US federal law that dissolves the entity known as the "state government" in Hawai`i.

What would be left in its place is what has existed all along anyway without interruption – the Nation of Hawai`i.

Only at that point, would it be appropriate for the citizens of Hawai`i to decide their future as it relates to a relationship with the United States.

Those possibilities would include –

Full Independence - Joining once again the family of nations in the world.

Free Association – Much like Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Integration with the US – Becoming a state again or a tribe of the US under federal recognition.

Did you know that when Ronald Reagan was president, one of the most conservative US presidents in recent times, his administration actually granted the Marshall Islands independence in 1986, which then lead to a free association relationship with the US?

Precedent for Hawaiian independence exists right now within US law as outlined above.

There are no laws that exist today within the US to prevent the US federal government from dissolving a state government. It is only fear and ignorance that holds the status quo in place.

WHEREAS, there has been submitted to the Congress of the United States of America a Bill S.147, further referred to as the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act (NHGRA), also known as the Akaka Bill, for imminent consideration, therefore, let it be known that:

We, the undersigned, he poe makaainana (native Hawaiian citizens) and poe noho oiwi Hawaii (residents) who are mamo (descendants) of the members of the Hawaiian Patriotic League of the Hawaiian Islands 1897-1898, and others today, who are in sympathy with the said League members and their mamo (descendants), categorically and adamantly reject and condemn S.147, NHGRA, a.k.a. the Akaka Bill in any shape or form, as it purports to legislate the political status of our people who have never yielded our sovereignty over our National lands to the United States.

HERE'S THE EFFECT OF OVER A CENTURY OF US OCCUPATION IN HAWAI'I ON NATIVE HAWAIIANS

The Hawaiian people, have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands. By 1805 that number had been halved.

By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawai`i and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population and 37 percent of the state's homeless population.

Independence is the only right to correct the wrongs.

HAWAIIANS PROTEST FEDERAL RECOGNITION!

Here's The Statement Read Before The Office Of Hawaiian Affairs Trustees July 7th By The Hui Pu.

The State Office of Hawaiian Affairs has spent millions of dollars over the last few years to promote the passage of federal recognition legislation in the US Congress.


Lobbyists were hired, offices were established in Washington DC, and extensive efforts were undertaken to persuade the Kanaka Maoli people of the attractiveness of this legislation.

These actions have been undertaken in contradiction to the successful protests of our kupuna in 1897 against the annexation of Hawai`i by the United States, and is a renegade action taken against future generations.

We come here today, as those who have not forgotten nor will ever surrender our indelible relationship to this 'aina and nation, to remember the words of our Queen Lili'uokalani. She wrote that "to ignore the voice of the people is to ignore the voice of God."

The unilateral, renegade actions undertaken by the State Office of Hawaiian Affairs have prevented the diverse voices of opposition, confusion, or support from being heard.

We demand that the silencing of our people be ended. The voices of our lahui must be heard.

We have two principal demands.

1) We demand balanced representation of diverse views. This Office, using state employees, on state time, and with state resources has solicited signatures for newspaper advertisements promoting the passage of the federal Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2005 (NHGRA.)

We demand that a balanced statement opposing the NHGRA be published in the Hawai`i daily newspapers. The community is not united in support for the NHGRA; this State Office should, therefore, be balanced in its representations.

Moreover, the public website that this State Office is utilizing to manufacture consent for the NHGRA is one-sided, offering only the option of supporting the bill, but not its rejection.

This is reminiscent of the 1959 statehood vote, which offered our people two options of integration under U.S. rule, and nothing else.

Our people deserve the option of opposing the bill.

2) We demand that the people's voices be heard.

The Congressional Delegation has not complied with requests to hold hearings in Hawai`i on the NHGRA, in spite of the fact that the bill has changed significantly since hearings half a decade ago.

Likewise, the leadership of the Hawai`i State Legislature has also refused to provide a forum for public concerns to be aired. We the people have not had a clear presentation from the congressional offices on this bill, on our soil, nor have we had an opportunity to express our opinions.

As trust beneficiaries of this State Office, we call on the Trustees to immediately convene hearings, to be held throughout Hawai`i Nei, for the voices of our people to be heard at this critical time.

Moreover, the Trustees should notify the US Congress that no vote should be taken on this measure until such time as the people have had a chance to address the legislation at public hearings.

...The United States of America has admitted in Public Law 1993, 103-150 that it violated its own Constitution, its treaties, international law and, by implication, all of the Christian teachings by perpetrating an outrageous armed theft of the Kingdom of Hawai`i and the forced American citizenship of Hawaiian national citizens.

America recognized in 1894, and again in 1993, that the Kingdom of Hawai`i has a right to exist.

The Hawaiian Nation has a right and obligation to enact and dictate land laws which prevent the selling of its lands to foreign speculators at prices which deny native nationals from living on their own home islands at an affordable price.

The Hawaiian nation has a right and obligation to protect and defend the quality of life, land, water, ocean and air.

The Hawaiian nation has a right and obligation to its citizens to provide the best in education, health care and housing.

The Akaka Bill, as well as many other individuals, would divide us ethnically, which is not the issue. Patriotism and a love for nation
is what this fight is about.

In the words of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, and from the pen of Hawai'i's last ruling monarch, Queen Li-li'uokalani in 1893, while imprisoned in 'Iolani Palace by American soldiers and businessmen (taken from the book "Hawai'i's Story," Mutual Publishing, 1990), let us ponder America's freedom and independence, in contrast to Hawai'i's unsuccessful quest for a similar goal: freedom from unlawful rule.

Excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776:

"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. ...

"But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."

WILL THE AKAKA BILL BE A GOOD DEAL FOR ALL?

In all the discussions about the Akaka bill, why is it that no one has mentioned the most important consideration of all: Is it going to be a good deal financially for all the people concerned, the non-Hawaiian and Native Hawaiian citizens of the state of Hawai'i?

Consider this. Suppose the state of Hawai'i were for sale. Would it be worth more before or after approximately half of the state was taken without compensation and millions of dollars in revenues from rents and taxes were lost forever?

A quick way to arrive at the answer is to pretend that you are a potential buyer.

The Native Hawaiians are confronted with a similar dilemma: how good a deal are they getting?

What kind of value do they put on thousands of acres of fragmented parcels - marginal lands with no infrastructure, no improvements, scant revenues, little income - and a very distant development horizon?

The only way to find out how much their land is worth is to advertise it for sale and see what akamai [smart] buyers are willing to pay.

Suppose the Akaka bill turns out to be an absolute disaster for reasons that no one can anticipate, like disagreements between the state of Hawai'i and the new Hawaiian nation, the possibility that the Supreme Court of the United States rules the bill unconstitutional, or that non-Hawaiians, Native Hawaiians or both become disillusioned with the outcome and demand to return to Square One.

What will happen then? Hard to figure.

The bill is silent on this point.

Native Hawaiian Rights Are About To Be Lost Forever

S147 – The Native Hawaiian Reorganization Act of 2005, otherwise known as the “Akaka bill,” will be voted on by the US Congress some time this month.


It will force federal recognition on Hawaiians against their will.

The Akaka bill is bad for Hawai`i and bad for the U.S.

The Akaka bill threatens to dispossess Hawaiians of their land and natural resources - just as many Native Americans have been dispossessed of theirs.

Dear Senator,

I write to express strong opposition to S.147, also known as the Native Hawaiian Reorganization Act of 2005. It falsely purports to award political self-determination to Native Hawaiians through US federal recognition.

S.147 names the US Department of Interior as the administrative agency to oversee, authorize and implement a political / economic settlement between Native Hawaiians and the United States of America.

US District Court Judge Royce Lamberth has repeatedly found the Department of Interior in contempt for it’s unconscionable refusal and inability to account for untold millions of acres and billions of Native American dollars.

You must recognize that Department of Interior involvement in any political and economic settlement for Native Hawaiians is outrageous.

Additionally, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, an Hawai`i State agency, is illegally spending Native Hawaiian trust funds to lobby for the passage of S.147.

Neither the Office of Hawaiian Affairs nor Governor Lingle, nor Senators Akaka or Inouye, or any other S.147 proponent, speaks for me on this bill!

I stand unified with my Hawaiian brothers and sisters, staunchly opposed to S.147.
