THE NEXT TIME SOMEONE ASKS, "WHY IS INDEPENDENCE BETTER FOR HAWAI'I THAN FEDERAL RECOGNITION," HERE'S WHAT TO TELL THEM -

Federal recognition (Akaka bill) is yesterday's solution.

It's thesis is again going hat in hand to the US federal government for help and turning Hawaiians inward and against each other in their own land.

For more than 100 years, this has not worked.

Instead, we can seize the opportunity to create a dynamic new nation through which we can maintain our culture and values, have more control over our future and be a leader among the pacific nations.

Let This Be Our Legacy To Our Future Generations.

WHAT DO HAWAIIANS WANT ?

HERE IS WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THEMSELVES, THEIR COUNTRYMEN AND THE UNITED STATES -

"The most common sense thing is for total independence.

We were a progressive modern nation of our time and recognized as a friendly, neutral nation within the Family of Nations, the predecessor of the League of Nations and the United Nations.

We had a democratic form of government, a constitutional monarchy with a bicameral legislative assembly. The works and legacies of our monarchs are legendary and noteworthy.

Today under the American system, we are concerned about our lands, culture, people and lifestyle which has been under attack for over a hundred years.

This gets us angry and more Hawaiians are desiring total independence as a result.

The Kingdom of Hawai'i is not only Native Hawaiians but subjects of non-Hawaiian blood who were legitimate subjects of the Kingdom.

This racial argument is an American thing and not a Hawaiian thing. So our concerns are well within our scope to protect all our subjects of the Kingdom.

We do expect reparations and restitution from the US for the injurious damages to our nation, land and people.

The US government is well aware of this and is trying to offer a piecemeal to settle this. Other options are still on the table and we are beginning to take a stand on which option is the right thing to do.

If the tables were turned around; which would you do?

I'm sure it wouldn't be a hard decision.

Remember, Hawaiians never hated Americans; but only those that did harm to us and the US government for its complicity and deceit.

We were never afraid that another country would take us over; we had over twenty-four treaties with various countries but the US is the only country that broke their treaties with us. "

That should tell you something.

DID YOU KNOW THE EFFECTS OF OVER A CENTURY OF U.S. OCCUPATION ON NATIVE HAWAIIANS ?

The Hawaiian people have suffered since the first Western contact in 1778.

Western diseases, to which Hawaiians had no immunity, decimated their numbers.

At the time of western contact, some 800,000 people inhabited the Hawaiian Islands.

By 1805 that number had been halved.

By 1853 there were only 71,000 Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian people in the islands.

Within 100 years of western contact, the Hawaiian population had been reduced by nearly 90 percent.

According to the 2000 census, the numbers of people who claim some native Hawaiian ancestry have increased to over 400,000.

But only 239,000 live in Hawaii and they are the poorest, most locked-up population in the state.

Although they only make up about 20 percent of the state's population, in June 2001 they made up 39 percent of the state's prison population, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

And they make up 37 percent of the state's homeless population, according to a 2003 survey.

AN ALASKAN NATIVE WARNS THE NATIVES PEOPLES OF CANADA ABOUT FEDERAL RECOGNITION -

IS THIS THE FUTURE FOR HAWAI'I ?

"There was an aboriginal settlement in Alaska and it was done without consensus.

There's not even 500 signatures on that Alaska native claim settlement act - and what it did was strip us of our land and strip us of our customary and traditional rights to fishing and hunting.

It actually put us into a state of taxation. This is not protection of your land.

I do not want to see the first nation people of Canada walk into the same traps that we walked into in Alaska.

There has got to be a different process going on because you have title, and Canada, like the United States, never perfected title to your lands.

This is something the first nations people have to understand - that if they do not have a perfected title, they cannot have an aboriginal claim on you."

FEDERAL RECOGNITION STALLS ONCE AGAIN !

The Honolulu Advertiser - Saturday, October 22, 2005
By Gordon Y.K. Pang

With the clock ticking toward the end of this year's congressional session, supporters and opponents of the Akaka bill can agree on one thing:

Neither side has a good idea of when, or if, the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act, also known as the Akaka bill in honor of lead author U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka, will get a vote on the floor of the Senate before this year's session ends.

Efforts by Akaka and fellow Hawai'i Sen. Daniel K. Inouye to get the bill moving in recent months have been stymied - first by conservative Republican senators and then a suddenly hectic fall congressional agenda that included disaster relief efforts, skyrocketing gasoline prices and two Supreme Court nominations....

TURNING ADVERSITY INTO TRIUMPH ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

While we have showcased individuals over time who inspire us in many different ways, we bring you someone this week who is very special indeed by virtue of turning adversity into triumph - Hawai`i's own Superman.

Kanalu Young, PhD is in a class by himself. A quadriplegic, he has achieved the near impossible. A very real and moving person, he continues to overcome and accomplish more every day than most of us do in a lifetime.

If you think Superman doesn't really exist, think again. Superman's definitely real, he's Native Hawaiian, and we've got him for you this week on Voices Of Truth - One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future -

MONDAY, October 24th - On Na Leo Television, channel 54, on both sides of Hawai'i island at 7:00 PM
"Anthropology-An Hawaiian Journey - A Visit With Steven Boggs."

Retired University of Hawai`i anthropology professor Steven Boggs, a long time resident, as well as a strong supporter of Independence for Hawai`i reveals what led him to that view.

He talks about his early years, visiting schools in Nanankuli and what 6 year old students taught him about being Kanaka Maoli and living under a foreign occupation.

Professor Boggs relates the dispossession of the Kanaka Maoli [Native Hawaiian] he has witnessed, what causes it, and most importantly, what we all can do about it.

Don't miss this inspirational message from an educator who not only has witnessed the past, but has a message of hope for the future.

"Hawaiian Superman - A Visit With Dr. Kanalu Young, PhD."

Rarely do we come across an individual as remarkable as Kanalu Young, a quadriplegic and Professor of Hawaiian history at the University of Hawai`i on O`ahu.

If that isn't impressive enough, he's also Director of the Masters Program at Kamakakuokalani, the Center For Hawaiian Studies on campus.

Even though he's currently bed ridden at home under doctor's orders, Kanalu accomplishes more in one day than most. Setting up his bedroom as his office, the world now comes to Kanalu - literally.

He meets on almost a daily basis with dignitaries and educators from all over the world as well as conducting his work for the university - all from his bed.

Of course we went calling on Kanalu, in his office/bedroom, and found an amazing individual indeed who lets absolutely nothing stop him

So if you're looking for a big dose of high inspiration and want to meet a world-class expert at showing us all how to become unstoppable as well as putting our own challenges in perspective, sit down with your entire family and meet Hawai`i's Superman.

DID THE U.S. REALLY OVERTHROW THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM ?

Honolulu Advertiser - October 20, 2005

Bob Gould wrote in his Oct. 14 letter: "The U.S. did not overthrow the monarchy."

Perhaps he missed the first sentence of United States Public Law 103-150, 103d Congress Joint Resolution 19, Nov. 23, 1993:

"To acknowledge the 100th anniversary of the Jan. 17, 1893, overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai`i, and to offer an apology to Native Hawaiians on behalf of the United States for the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawai`i."

Gould and others can read the entire law at www.hawaii-nation.org/publawall.html

WHY DO NATIVE HAWAIIANS & DESCENDANTS OF THE KINGDOM WANT THEIR NATION AND LAND BACK?-

Because today Native Hawaiians are at a critical juncture to survive as a people.

Because for foreign business interests it's a matter of profit and loss. For Native Hawaiians it's a matter of life and death.

Because we seek to protect our natural resources.

Because while Native Hawaiian families are struggling to survive, their water is being shipped to the other side of the island so that housing and resorts can be built by rich foreigners.

Because it is our national inheritance - never given away by either native treaty or by native vote.

An Independent Hawaiian Nation Benefits Us All -
Both Native Hawaiian And Non-Native.

DOES AMERICA HAVE A MONOPOLY ON LOVE OF COUNTRY ?

The Maui News - Friday, July 08, 2005

...The United States of America has admitted in Public Law 1993, 103-150 that it violated its own Constitution, its treaties, international law and, by implication, all of the Christian teachings by perpetrating an outrageous armed theft of the Kingdom of Hawai`i and the forced American citizenship of Hawaiian national citizens.

America recognized in 1894, and again in 1993, that the Kingdom of Hawai`i has a right to exist.

The Hawaiian Nation has a right and obligation to enact and dictate land laws which prevent the selling of its lands to foreign speculators at prices which deny native nationals from living on their own home islands at an affordable price.

The Hawaiian nation has a right and obligation to protect and defend the quality of life, land, water, ocean and air.

The Hawaiian nation has a right and obligation to its citizens to provide the best in education, health care and housing.

The Akaka Bill, as well as many other individuals, would divide us ethnically, which is not the issue.

Patriotism and a love for nation is what this fight is about.

FINALLY! - OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS SUED FOR MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS IN SUPPORT OF AKAKA BILL

The Honolulu Advertiser - Friday, October 14, 2005
By Gordon Y.K. Pang

A lawsuit filed by five Hawaiians claims that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) is illegally spending dollars reserved for the benefit of those with 50 percent Hawaiian blood or more.

All nine OHA trustees as well as two former trustees are named in the suit, which states that they "expended trust funds without regard to the blood quantum contained in the definition of native Hawaiians" as spelled out in the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920.

The lawsuit was filed yesterday in U.S. District Court....

The trustees, the lawsuit said, have spent trust funds in lobbying Congress for passage of the Akaka bill, which seeks to create a government entity that would represent all with Hawaiian blood regardless of their quantum.

Additionally, the trustees have "expended trust funds for all-expense-paid vacations and political junkets for themselves and their staff in the guise of lobbying for passage of the Akaka bill," the lawsuit said.

OHA trustees have previously stated that they have spent at least $1 million lobbying for the Akaka bill....

Asked what percentage of OHA's funding he believes is being spent illegally, [attorney Walter] Schoettle replied: "That's what we're going to find out. They don't exactly keep very good track. It's all mixed up."

Schoettle said his clients are beneficiaries of OHA and each is at least 50 percent Hawaiian.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF THIS HAPPENED TO YOU ?

Let's pretend I visit your house.

You offer me food and rest. I decide to stay.

Then, I order you and your family around, use your things and rearrange the rooms.

I take down your photos and religious symbols, replace them with my own and make you speak my language.

One day, I dig up your garden and replace it with crops that I can sell. You and your family must now buy all of your food from me.

Later, I invite my father and his buddies over. They bring guns. We take your keys.

I forge a deed and declare my father to be the owner of your house.

I bring more people. Some work for me. Some pay me to stay in your house.

I seize your savings and spend it on my friends. You and your family now sleep on the porch.

Finally you protest. Being reasonable, I let you stay in a corner of the house and give you a small allowance, but only if you behave.

I tell you, "Sorry, I was wrong for taking the house."

But when you demand your house back, I tell you to be realistic. "You are part of this family now, whether you like it or not," I say. "Besides, this is for your own good.

For all that I have done for you, why aren't you grateful?"

Now Do You See Why Hawaiians Want Their Independence Back And Nothing Less?

AKAKA BILL IS DECEITFUL
A Letter To The Honolulu Star-Bulletin

Wedesday October 12, 2005

Many Hawaiians will learn too late that they got duped through the Akaka Bill.

They must be ignorant with the US policy and the problems the Native Americans constantly face.

Like Bush, the Pro-Akaka snollygosters have been deceiving them. The biggest affront is that the Hawai`i nationals are being snubbed and who have a rightful vested interest in this issue.

Descendants of the Hawaiian Kingdom have been gregiously injured through the US unlawful actions. Of the bona fide Hawai`i Nationals, 84.4% were kanaka maoli [Native Hawaiian] and 15.6 % were of foreign origin as of the 1890 census.

These descendants are still Hawai`i Nationals and only they decide their fate which their ancestors already decided in the 1897 Ku'e [protest] Petitions.

The US has purposely ignored the descendants of the 15.6% Hawai`i Nationals in creating a tribe not of their making and eliminating a portion of the Hawaiian Kingdom Nationals.

If the Bill passes, it will also disenfranchise most of the part-Hawaiians that are less than 50%. Through the Bill, they will be giving the US clear title of all the land in Hawai`i for a pittance and be subject to the state and federal government powers.

Those that aren't included, should file a suit against the US that the US is forming a government to steal a nation without considering the rest of the Hawai`i nationals of non-Hawaiian blood.

FEDERAL RECOGNITION AT ANY PRICE ?

Honolulu Advertiser Editorial Actually Confuses Impact Of Akaka Bill

Editor,

Your Oct 8th issue states in an opinion: That recently proposed "amendments ensure against the bill's use to settle Hawaiian claims against the government."

The opposite is true. The amendment forces the bills use, specifically the negotiations provisions, for the settlement of Hawaiians claims.

Under the terms of the amendment Hawaiian are left at the negotiating table claims in hand, with no access to the courts to pursue their claims.

The proposed amendment posted on Akaka's web site prohibts Indian Non- Intercourse Act claims and claims protected by the sovereign immunity of the United States and the State of Hawaii among others.

The bill "reclaims" the sovereign immunity of the United States in claims where sovereign immunity has been waived previously.

The amendment contains this new languange and plenty more of the same: "Nothing in this act is intended to create or allow to be maintained in any court, any potential breach of trust actions, land claims, resource protection or resource management claims, or similar types of claims brought by or on behalf of Native Hawaiians, or the Native Hawaiian governing entity for equitable, monitary, or Administrative Procedure Act based relief against the United States or the State of Hawai`i..."

And: "...any claims that may have already accrued and might be brought against the United States, including any claims of the types specifically referred to (elswhere in the bill) be rendered non justicable ...."

Doesn't anybody actually read the bill before they start telling people what it means?

On top of that, she plans to film a documentary on the project as the buses travel.

HAWAIIANS DEMAND OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS TO RESCIND AKAKA BILL SUPPORT

OHA Supports The Bill OnlyTo Protect Their Own Paychecks

The Honolulu Advertiser - Thursday, October 6, 2005
By James Gonser

A group of Native Hawaiians opposed to the Akaka Bill today asked the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to rescind their support for the bill or it would stage a non-violent protest by occupying the Board of Trustee's office for 24 hours.

Ikaika Hussey, a member of Hui Pu, read a four-page statement to the OHA board at its regular meeting today saying amendments recently proposed for to the bill make its passage "more dangerous than beneficial to our Hawaiian community."

Thirteen Hui Pu members dressed in black stood behind Hussey as he testified....

Board chairwoman Haunani Apoliona said the amendments are only proposed and not finalized.

She said the board continues to support the bill and could not take a vote on changing its stand even if members wanted to because it was not on the agenda for the meeting.

If the group does stay in the building at 711 Kapi'olani Boulevard, it will be up to the OHA administrator to make a decision on evicting them or not, Apoliona said.

WHO ARE THEY TRYING TO FOOL ?

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs claims if the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act of 2005, (Akaka Bill) isn’t passed, alleged subsequent loss of federal funding could have a dramatic effect upon not only Native Hawaiians, but also Hawaii's economy.

Let's take a look at actual federal appropriations in fiscal 2002 to cover all 250,000 people who call themselves Native Hawaiian -

Education - $30.5 million / 250,000 Hawaiians = $122.00 per Hawaiian. How much education can you buy this year with $122.00?

If teachers are making say 30,000/year you could hire 1016 teachers. That means there would only have to be 246 Hawaiians per classroom.

Affordable Housing - $9.6 million/250,000 Hawaiians = $38.40 per Hawaiian. How much of your yearly rental costs does $38.40 cover?

Health Care - $7 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $28.00 per Hawaiian. How much dental and medical insurance can you buy with $28.00? Maybe get only half your teeth cleaned this year and hope you don’t get sick?

Strengthening Community Colleges - $3.25 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $13.00 per Hawaiian. How many units of academic instruction does $13.00 cover at a community college these days?

Vocational Education - $2.9 million/250,000 Hawaiians = $11.60 per Hawaiian. What can you learn how to do for $11.60?

Community Development - $2 million/250,000 Hawaiians = $8.00 per Hawaiian. How much Community infrastructure does $8.00 buy?

Strengthening Community Colleges (Agriculture) - $1.5 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $6.00 per Hawaiian. What does $6.00 buy in the way of agricultural education at community college these days?

Housing Loan Guarantees - $1 million /250,000 Hawaiians = $4.00 per Hawaiian. How much of your annual mortgage does $4.00 cover?

Culture & Arts - $740,000/250,000 Hawaiians = $2.96 per Hawaiian. For $2.96, about all the culture you can afford is a plastic kukui nut lei.

Looks Like About $233.96 Per Hawaiian ...
Less Administrative Costs Of Course.

WILL HAWAIIANS RIGHT WRONG THROUGH VOTE ON INDEPENDENCE ?

Honolulu Advertiser - September 29, 2005

In regard to the article "Feds still object to Akaka bill," Sept. 22 -

The U.S. Justice Department knows that in 1898 the Congress of the United States made a grave mistake by attempting to annex Hawai`i by joint resolution 51.

They violated their own laws.

Hawaiians were not allowed to vote for or against annexation. The U.S. Senate tried two times to pass a treaty of annexation of Hawai`i.

Twice it failed.

If they did allow the majority of the citizens of the Kingdom of Hawai`i in 1898 to vote, it would have been an overwhelming "no."

Asians, Native Americans, black slaves and Mexicans were being treated like stray dogs during that era and they were not allowed to be citizens of the United States because of the color of their skin. The Kingdom of Hawai`i was the safest place to be for non-whites.

The only way the U.S. government can right the wrong it inflicted on Hawaiians is to let the Hawaiian people decide if they want independent status or be part of the American system.

If Hawaiians are not allowed to vote for the form of governance they prefer then the whole American democratic process is good for nothing.

ALOHA MAI KAKOU!
WELCOME IF YOU'RE VISITING FREEHAWAII.INFO FOR THE FIRST TIME!

Free Hawai`i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent, sovereign nation status, like it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.

In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.

Did You Know -

98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow!

Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai`i is in Hawaiian hands. Over 60% is in non-Hawaiian hands.

A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai`i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians!

Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai`i.

Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai`i today.

Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators of any ethnic group in the US.

Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile of any ethnic group in the US.

Descendants of the Hawaiian Nation want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.

"LET'S FORGET ABOUT THE AKAKA BILL"

So Says Scholar, Journalist & Filmmaker Tom Coffman, Who Has Written Extensively About The Politics & History Of Hawai`i -

Honolulu Star-Bulletin - Sunday, September 25, 2005

"I empathize with Senators Inouye and Akaka in their well-meant efforts, but with respect I suggest they have become fixated on getting a bill out.

If giving up just claims is the price of the bill, let us forget the bill.

Let us preserve some measure of respect for one another and not become accomplices to another fraud.

Let us come home to Hawai`i and hunker down. Let us rally around the Hawaiians, and denounce their tormenters for what they are, and live to fight another day for some semblance of real justice."
