TODAY IS KA LA KU`OKO`A -
HAWAIIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY

In the Kingdom of Hawai'i, November 28 was an official holiday called Ka La Ku`oko`a, or Independence Day. This was the day in 1843 when England and France formally recognized Hawaii's independence.

His Hawaiian Majesty King Kamehameha III deemed it prudent and necessary to dispatch a Hawaiian delegation to the United States and then to Europe with the power to negotiate treaties and to ultimately secure the recognition of Hawaiian Independence by the major powers of the world.

The Hawaiian delegation, while in the United States of America, secured the assurance of U.S. President Tyler on December 19, 1842 of its recognition of Hawaiian independence, and then proceeded to meet Sir George Simpson in Europe and secure formal recognition by Great Britain and France.

As a result of this recognition, the Hawaiian Kingdom entered into treaties with the major nations of the world and had established over ninety legations and consulates in multiple seaports and cities.

November 28 was thereafter established as an official national holiday to celebrate the recognition of Hawai'i's independence.

But in 1893, an illegal intervention into Hawai'i's affairs by the U.S. resulted in a "fake revolution" against the legitimate Hawaiian government, and a puppet oligarchy set itself up with its main purpose being Hawai'i's annexation to the United States.

Hawaiians protested and celebrated Ka La Ku`oko`a anyway, telling the story of the national heroes who had travelled to Europe to secure Hawaii's recognition.

Today we celebrate Nov. 28 as Ka La Ku`oko`a - Hawaiian Independence Day, to remember that Hawai'i was a fully recognized member of the world family of nations, and that's its independence is still intact under prolonged illegal occupation.

A PEEK INTO A FREE HAWAI`I ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTURE

Have you ever wondered what a Free Hawai`i might actually look like?

What would the vision be? And why would it be any better than what we have right now?

Our guests this week share their own insights to these "what and why" questions and their answers may both surprise and amaze you.

They're individuals who have obviously spent quite a while searching for the answers and in the process have become both stronger and wiser because of their journey.

So, if you want some inspiration for your own search, join Bumpy, Sabra, Lynette and Jackie as well as the rest of us this week on Voices Of Truth - One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future -

MONDAY, November 28th - On Na Leo Television, channel 54, on both sides of Hawai'i island at 7:00 PM

Another of our second season segments that has received very positive reviews, we feature one of Hawai`i's long time sovereignty fighters, and founder of both Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo and Nation of Hawai`i.

Because he shares with us an aspect of himself that not everyone sees, and what got him involved in creating a better future for the people of Hawai`i, viewers have remarked about powerful, inspiring aspects of Bumpy they never knew.

We promise you'll want more as Bumpy tells how his years growing up actually helped to mold him as a leader today who is both strong and wise.

Filmed on location at Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo, Bumpy is 100% inspiration in a setting of stunning beauty and also an example of what all Hawai`i could be.

WEDNESDAY, November 30th - On Akaku, Channel 53 at 6:30 PM

"Kupuna Islands - A Visit With Sabra Kauka."

In a very unique and popular second season segment, Kaua'i resident Sabra Kauka takes us along on the 2005 Educators Expedition to the Kupuna [Ancestor] Islands, also known as the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.

A Hawaiian cultural practitioner and educator, Sabra was one of only ten Hawai’i educators selected for this “first-of it’s-kind” opportunity, where the environment of the Kupuna Islands is very beautiful, but also very fragile.

Sabra reports, "It’s our kuleana [responsibility] to protect this environment because it's the nursery for the younger, inhabited Hawaiian Islands. We Kanaka Maoli [Native Hawaiian] are spiritually, genealogically, and culturally linked to these Kupuna.”

Well, naturally, we had to sit down with her and get the whole story in amazing and beautiful pictures and words.

Don't miss this incredible opportunity as she shares highlights and photos on this spiritual and very special voyage.

THURSDAY, December 1st - On Ho`ike, Channel 52 at 8:30 PM
"Journey For The Queen - A Visit With Lynette Cruz."

How important are the words, works and life of Lili`uokalani today ? Is the Queen simply a royal of the past or a leader for us all today?

Long time Living Nation activist and college professor Lynette Cruz shares with us the impact the Queen has on her everyday life and how the far-reaching vision, wisdom and aloha of this incredible Mo`i [royal] guides her in everything she does.

For Lynette, Lili`u is the ultimate role model guiding us into the future. Share with your entire `ohana what Lynette has to say in this highly inspirational segment about our beloved Lili`uokalani.

Jackie reminds us of the saying, "If you want something done, just ask a busy person to do it."

As if being publisher of the `Oiwi Files wasn't enough, Jackie has somehow found time to launch a plan for Sovereignty Buses that will travel throughout Hawai`i as well as across the US to educate and spread the message of Kanaka Maoli self-determination.

On top of that, she plans to film a documentary on the project as the buses travel.

And did we mention that she also has not one but two masters degrees as part of her action plan?

We're sure you'll agree that Jackie's a superb role model for making things happen as she shares with us her exciting vision for the future of Hawai`i.

AN AKAKA BILL PROTEST SONG

Based on "O Danny Boy," lyrics by Frederick Edward Weatherly, 1848-1929, and the melody, "Londonderry Air"

Danny boys, the bill, the bill is failing--
And will be swept away soon with the tide.
Danner girls, Hawaiians won't be crawling--
Oppression soon must go and we will bide.

So don't come back with falsehoods wrapped in paper,
And don't you bring us laws to take our land.
We'll not agree, in sunshine or in shadow,
O Danny boys, O Danner girls, we'll take a stand.

And till we know the Akaka bill is dying,
Until it's dead, as dead as it can be,
We'll stand and tell the world it's false and lying,
We're never giving in, we will be free.

And we shall hear our children's children's children,
And all their lives shall warmer, sweeter be.
For we'll not stoop to ransom off their freedom.
So boys and girls, give up this travesty!

WHAT DID THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES SAY AT THE TIME OF THE ILLEGAL OVERTHROW OF THE HAWAIIAN NATION ? -

"Whereas my good and great sister and fellow sovereign, her gracious majesty, Lili`uokalani, Queen of Hawai`i, has been wickedly and unlawfully dethroned by the machinations of Americans and person of American descent in those islands, being instigated thereto by the devil, one John L. Stevens,

And whereas my well-conceived plans for the restoration of her sacred majesty have not had the result they deserved but her majesty is still defrauded of her legal rights by her refractory and rebellious subjects, and her position is a just cause of sympathy and alarm,

Now therefore, I, Grover Cleveland, President of the United States, do hereby ordain and appoint the last day of April next as a day of solemn fasting, humiliation and prayer. Let my people humble themselves and repent for their injustice to me and my great and good sister, and pray, without distinction of color, for her speedy return to the throne and the discomfiture of the miserable herd of missionaries and their sons, her enemies and traducers.

Long live Lili`uokalani, the de jure Queen of Hawai`i."

- President Grover Cleveland, February 25, 1894

HAWAI'I DESERVES INDEPENDENCE

From The Maui News -

We are not Native Americans.

We want independence, not another government running our affairs in Hawai`i.

Enough, Gov. Linda Lingle, Sens. Daniel Inouye and Dan Akaka, and even the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

I know that you all aren't looking out for the best of our people because if you were there would be no more houseless Kanaka Maoli [Native Hawaiians] on the beaches and streets.

They would have a house to call home and not a waiting list.

How many of our kupuna [elders] died waiting?

The Indians and Eskimos have gotten recognition that made them slaves again to the de facto government. They became dependents to the United States.

Do we want that? I pray not.

ALOHA!

If This Is Your First Visit To FREEHAWAII.INFO, Welcome!

FREEHAWAII.INFO is dedicated to restoring independence and sovereignty to the Hawaiian Islands.

In 1893, the independant nation of Hawai'i was illegally overthrown by rich American sugar barons and the US marines.

Then President Cleveland condemned it by calling it "an act of war."

Did You Know ? -

OVER 98% OF ALL NATIVE HAWAIIANS AND MOST NON-NATIVE SUBJECTS OF THE HAWAIIAN KINGDOM WERE FULLY OPPOSED TO THE ILLEGAL OVERTHROW.

Today, those decendants of the Nation carry forth the voices of their ancestors and still oppose the illegal occupation of the US government in Hawai'i.

HAWAI`I VOTES BOUGHT BY ALASKA OIL

From Ka Leo O Hawai`i By Juanita Mathews
Ka Leo Associate Editorials Editor

And Now, The Conclusion -

It is inexcusable that our senators have voted in favor of oil interests and against the survival of a tribal community that is desperately trying to hold on to its traditional way of life.

While preaching that they want Native Hawaiians to be able to lay claim to their lands, our senators are taking away the lands of another native people.

The area at the center of this issue has been protected for many years. It has a rich ecology that is needed by Arctic wildlife and the Gwich'in.

Protection should not be lifted because of a misleading campaign that states that America needs ANWR oil.

What America needs is a slap in the face, a slap that might wake us up to the realization that drilling for more oil is not going to help our energy crisis, our environmental crisis or our international relations crisis.

We as Americans need to push for renewable energy development that will not pollute our air, will not destroy our ecosystems and will allow us to be free from an oil industry that puppeteers our elected government officials.

From Ka Leo O Hawai`i By Juanita Mathews

Now, Here's Part Seven -

Robin Danner, who denies that she has ever done any work for her family's company, does admit that she gave speech at a Teamsters conference.

According to the Danner and Associates ANWR Activity Log, this speech was scheduled and feedback was supposed to be given to Arctic Power.

Danner also requested travel reimbursement from Danner and Associates with a Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement request form.

The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement definitely has strong Alaska ties, and Senator Akaka has made those ties even stronger.

Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska supported the Akaka bill so much that the bill has been renamed the Akaka-Stevens Bill.

Now, Here's Part Six -

According to the same Hawai'i Island Journal article the State of Alaska public records show a contract, with no date of termination, between Danner and Associates and Arctic Power, signed by Jade Danner on Feb. 15, 2002.

It is an agreement to pay Danner and Associates a flat monthly fee of $5,000 for services.

Included in the scope of work section is: "Development of a Strategic Plan in conjunction with Arctic Power for Hawai'i, monitor and respond to opposing editorials/stories in local news media, provide periodic updates to Arctic Power about activities and progress in Hawai'i, communicate with Hawaii's senators' staff to determine how to be most effective in assisting with educating the Hawaiian populace about the facts of ANWR, other projects as may be assigned by Arctic Power."

From Ka Leo O Hawai`i By Juanita Mathews
Ka Leo Associate Editorials Editor

Now, Here's Part Five -

So, why did Akaka and Inouye really decide to ditch their party's stance and vote in favor of drilling?

The answer seems to lie within the Akaka Bill.

This controversial bill allows for a Hawaiian governing entity to negotiate with the federal government in order to settle Native Hawaiian land claims.

Opponents of the bill argue that its wording was not voted on by Native Hawaiians. Other concerns are about the power that the Department of the Interior and the federal government will have over native rights.

The connection between Alaska oil interests and the Akaka Bill lies in the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, an organization that is pushing for the Akaka Bill.

The president and acting CEO of this non-profit group, Robin Danner, is a Native Hawaiian with close ties to Alaska oil interests. The Council even accepted $100,000 from the Inupiat-owned Arctic Slope Regional Corporation.

According to the Hawai'i Island Journal, Robin Danner's family owns a company called Danner and Associates, which has business ties to an Alaskan non-profit group called Arctic Power.

Arctic Power is funded by the state of Alaska, oil industry corporations, including Exxon Mobil, and unions with interests in Alaska's oil industry, including the Teamsters.

Robin Danner and her sister Jade Danner received money to promote ANWR drilling in Hawai'i.

Now, Here's Part Four -

The Porcupine Caribou Herd is one of the largest herds in North America.

The Inupiat and the Gwich'in tribes depend on caribou for food.

Caribou is only a small fraction of the Inupiat's traditional diet, but the main staple of the Gwich'in diet.

Since the caribou's sensitive calving grounds are located where oil companies would be drilling, the Gwich'in see their way of life disappearing if they do not fight to protect the area.

An entire way of life and primary food source is at stake for the Gwich'in, but our senators are voting for the interests of a tribe that is trying to bring in more profits at the expense of the environment.

The poisoning of traditional Native American values by oil money is blatantly apparent.

Now, Here's Part Three -

The Inupiat, who formed the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, with a growth rate ahead of the S&P 500 index, have brought in yearly revenues through oil and other subsidiaries of about $1.5 billion dollars.

This tribe is one of the richest in the nation and has ties with the oil industry including a contract with the United States to supply fuel to the military.

This tribe's political power has allowed them to push for opening the refuge to oil drilling, despite the protests of the other tribe living on ANWR lands.

The Gwich'in tribe, or Caribou People, is the other tribe living in the area. It depends on the coastal plain for its survival.

This tribe does not have the political power that the Inupiat tribe has, so they depend on grassroots efforts to fight the prospect of oil drilling in an area that is sacred to them.

From Ka Leo O Hawai`i By Juanita Mathews
Ka Leo Associate Editorials Editor

Now, Here's Part Two -

Their votes tipped the scales enough to further the interests of oil companies in Alaska and possibly cause the downfall of the native Alaskans, whose subsistence and cultural identity depends on this protected area.

Hawai'i is a state that is rich in cultural identity and has a philosophy that is tied to the land and its protection. It is also a state that understands the battle that native people must go through to protect their way of life from
developers' interests.

It strikes me as hypocritical that our senators, Akaka and Inouye, voted in favor of a bill that would further development in what the Department of Interior's Final Legislative Environmental Impact Statement called "the most biologically productive part of the Arctic Refuge for wildlife and the center of
wildlife activity."

Akaka defended his position on the drilling by saying "For me, this is an issue about economic self-determination. This is an issue about allowing those who have lived on the coastal plain and cared for the coastal plain for many, many generations, to do what they believe is right with their lands."

Akaka is referring to the Inupiat people, one of the two native Alaskan tribes that live on the 19 million acre ANWR.

HAWAI`I VOTES BOUGHT BY ALASKA OIL

From Ka Leo O Hawai`i By Juanita Mathews
Ka Leo Associate Editorials Editor

Last week the senate voted 51-49 in favor of opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's 1.5 million acre coastal plain to oil drilling.

Senators who opposed drilling in the past used the filibuster to force a 60-vote majority in order to pass any bill that opens up the area.

Because the proposal to open up ANWR to drilling was tagged onto a budget reconciliation bill, it is immune to the filibuster and requires only a majority for the bill to pass.

The vote on this issue was largely partisan, and therefore, it piqued my curiosity when I found out that both of Hawaii's democratic senators voted in favor of drilling.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO FREEHAWAII.INFO ?

Free Hawai'i means returning the Hawaiian Islands back to an independent, sovereign nation status, like it was before it was illegally overthrown by US marines and rich sugar barons in 1893.

In 1993, President Clinton formally apologized for that act and publicly acknowledged the illegality of the overthrow.

DID YOU KNOW ? -

98% of all Hawaiians living at the time opposed the illegal overthrow!

Today, less than 20% of all land in Hawai'i is in Hawaiian hands. Over 60% is in non-Hawaiian hands.

A few individuals, who are non-Hawaiian, lease an amount of land in Hawai'i that is greater than all land leased to all Native Hawaiians!

Currently, only 72 landowners control 95% of all land in Hawai'i.

Native Hawaiians make up the largest percentage of homeless in Hawai'i today.

Native Hawaiians have the worst social, educational and economic indicators of any ethnic group in the US.

Native Hawaiians currently have the worst health profile of any ethnic group in the US.

Descendants of the Hawaiian Nation want their country and land back so they can grow their own foods, become healthy once again, and control their own destiny.

HERE'S SOME COMMON SENSE POLICIES KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS SHOULD IMPLEMENT -

1. Open the qualifications to bona fide descendants of the Kingdom of Hawai`i regardless of ethnicity.

2. Non-Kanaka Maoli [Native Hawaiian] should be assessed full tuition comparable to the `Iolani and Punahou schools. Kanaka Maoli children would receive full scholarships.

3. Criteria for admission should give preference to low-income, broken homes, orphaned, and dysfunctional families or individuals, and those with a history of low performance in schools.

4. Outreach programs and satellite classes should extend to all qualified students that have not been admitted to the schools.

5. A stipend should be given to Immersion Schools and Charter Schools to insure its survival. Lands with or without buildings should be given to them to used to function as a school.

6. Referrals to Immersion and Charter Schools should be given to those that failed to be admitted to the Kamehameha Schools.

Kamehameha Schools mission should be to help all Hawai`i Nationals and improve their conditions.

AKAKA BILL TO BE SNUCK UNDER THE RADAR ?

From The Honolulu Advertiser -

After reading your analyses and studying the complete text of the [Akaka] bill you published April 10, I am not sure whether it is more like a "pig in a poke" or a Pandora's box. It has characteristics of both.

As your analyses correctly pointed out, no one can be sure now what will be the final result of the sovereignty process that the bill authorizes.

The fact that emotions are already running high in both the pro-bill and anti-bill camps leads one to expect unpleasant racial and ethnic tensions when details are worked out years down the road.

The only thing certain about the Akaka bill is that we have no way of knowing today how it will impact the various segments of Hawai'i's population and institutions, because all the bill does is set in motion a series of negotiations with totally unpredictable outcomes.

The fact that the current strategy of our congressional delegation is to advance the bill "under the radar" speaks volumes.

DID WASHINGTON ADMIT IT STOLE HAWAI'I ?

Here's Part Of A US Department Of Justice Legal Opinion From October 4, 1988 -

"It is therefore unclear which constitutional power congress exercised when it aquired Hawai'i by joint resolution.

Accordingly. it is doubtful that the aquisition of Hawai'i can serve as an appropriate precedent for a congressional assertion of sovereignty..."

A Hawaiian cultural practitioner and educator, Sabra was one of only ten Hawai`i educators selected for this “first-of it's-kind opportunity, where the environment of the Kupuna Islands is very beautiful, but also very fragile.

Sabra reports, "It's our kuleana (responsibility) to protect this environment because it's the nursery for the younger, inhabited Hawaiian Islands. We Kanaka Maoli [Native Hawaiian] are spiritually, genealogically, and culturally linked to these Kupuna.”

Well, naturally, we had to sit down with her and get the whole story in amazing and beautiful pictures and words.

HOW HEALTHY ARE HAWAIIANS TODAY?

Hawaiians suffer the worst health profile in Hawai'i.

Between 1980 and 1990, while rates of death from heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes decreased for non-Hawaiians, they increased, sometimes dramatically, for Hawaiians.Below 1 year of age, the Hawaiian death rate is more than double the overall state average.

Between 1 and 4 years of age, it is triple the state figure, and so on into adulthood.

Just under 20 percent of the population, we suffer 75 percent of the deaths for persons less than 18 years of age.

CAN YOU IMAGINE?...

Everyone seeking independence, everyone setting themselves free from slavery from this corrupted system that runs our lives here in Hawai`i?

There would be no state or county.

That means there would be an independent state or nation again.

We the people would be able to control our own destiny!

Land wouldn't be sold to bigwigs. House prices would come down so our people would actually be able to live here.

How can we sell ourselves out again by accepting federal recognition and go along with that nation-within-a-nation thing?

This would be no good for us or our children.

There is a way to freedom... it's called Free Hawai`i.

IT'S WAY PAST TIME TO FREE HAWAI`I !

Writer To Office Of Hawaiian Affairs Newpaper Puts OHA On Notice -

...I think it's past due to demand now that President Bush reinstate our sovereignty, free Hawai`i, as well as immediately initiate a de-occupation of our islands.

...The concept is a simple one - further association with and occupation by the U.S. is absolutely not what I believe Hawaiians need to be looking at to fulfill their dreams.

After all, should that table ever be turned, "putting Hawaiian lands in Hawaiian hands," would make Hawaiians the wealthiest indigenous people on earth.

Why would we want it to be any other way (for instance, being categorized like Indians or Native Alaskans,) when if the cards are played properly, we could have our cake and eat it too?
