HAWAIIAN ACTIVIST ONE OF TEN WHO MADE A DIFFERENCEGRAD STUDENT PROVES EFFECTIVE PROTESTOR
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin - Friday, December 30, 2005 - By Craig Gima
Through the end of the year, the Star-Bulletin will recognize 10 who changed Hawai`i this year....
College protests got a fresh face in 2005 when a new generation joined with older native Hawaiian and anti-war protesters whose activism dates back
to the 1960s and 1970s....
Among the protest leaders and a main spokesman for the group was Ikaika Hussey, 27, a political-science graduate student at UH-Manoa....
Hussey said he got involved with the UARC coalition through DMZ Hawai`i Aloha `Aina, which has worked for the demilitarization of Hawaii and organized protests over the U.S. military's use of Makua Valley, the Mokapu Peninsula and Waikane Valley.... "I didn't think it was enough to just observe from a distance," Hussey said of his activism.
"To hope for a better world, like Ghandi said, we have to be the change we want to see in the world."Read The Entire Story Here - http://starbulletin.com/2005/12/30/news/story05.html
FREEHAWAII.INFO OBSERVES NAHI'ENA'ENA DAYPrincess Nahi`ena`ena, (whose name means "stirring the fires,") daughter of Kamehameha I, was born in the year 1815, although the exact date isn't known. Living through a period of great change in Hawai`i, her life was tragically cut short.Defying the customs of the time, her mother, Keopuolani, kept her infant daughter by her side. Nahi'ena'ena grew up constantly aware about her high ranking in a changing Hawai`i. This was a source of her conflicted life. The last years of her life were one of illness and dejection. She gave birth to a son on September 1836. The baby lived for only a few hours. Nahi'ena'ena never recovered from child birth. She died on December 30, 1836.Nahi'ena'ena's death, at age 21, was observed for the first time in modern times on Dec 30, 2001 with traditional Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) protocols at 'Iolani Palace Grounds in Honolulu.Today we remember and honor this descendant of Kamehameha The Great as another fallen warrior - casualty of the invasion and occupation of a foreign culture and military power.

A SPECIAL HOLIDAY PRESENTATION OF VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTUREA big mahalo [thank you] to you all who have contacted us this past week regarding our United Nations segment, "Hawaiian Independence At The United Nations - Part One," which we debuted last Saturday on O`ahu's `Olelo.
For those of you who caught it, we're very grateful for your many kind words and encouragement.
And for all those who contacted us from the neighbor islands asking when it will air where you live, you don't have long to wait - it will be airing in another week or two.
Finally, for all of you outside of Hawai`i who called, wrote and emailed, you may view the segment via live streaming, online at the `Olelo website. Instructions for doing so are listed below.
And because we received so many requests from viewers on O`ahu who didn't see it, we are airing it again this Saturday.
Actually taped inside the UN in New York City, the segment features a blow-by-blow account of what transpired about a month before, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, in a Senate hearing room on the Akaka bill.
Well, you probably won't be surprised to learn they didn't allow anyone a chance to speak against it.
Naturally, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and others tried to have only one side of the story told - their side. But not all went exactly as planned.
So as we bring another year to a close, and you have your family close, sit down, relax and join us for a special holiday presentation of Voices Of Truth - One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future.
MONDAY, December 26th - On Na Leo Television, channel 54, on both sides of Hawai'i island at 7:00 PM
"Unsettled Spirit - A Visit With Bumpy Kanahele." Another of our second season segments that has received very positive reviews, we feature one of Hawai`i's long time sovereignty fighters, and founder of both Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo and Nation of Hawai`i.
Because he shares with us an aspect of himself that not everyone sees, and what got him involved in creating a better future for the people of Hawai`i, viewers have remarked about powerful, inspiring aspects of Bumpy they never knew.
We promise you'll want more as Bumpy tells how his years growing up actually helped to mold him as a leader today who is both strong and wise.
Filmed on location at Pu`uhonua O Waimanalo, Bumpy is 100% inspiration in a setting of stunning beauty and also an example of what all Hawai`i could be.
WEDNESDAY, December 28th - On Akaku, Channel 53 at 6:30 PM "Hawaiian Superman - A Visit With Dr. Kanalu Young, PhD." Rarely do we come across an individual as remarkable as Kanalu Young, a quadriplegic and Professor of Hawaiian history at the University of Hawai`i on O`ahu.
If that isn't impressive enough, he's also Director of the Masters Program at Kamakakuokalani, the Center For Hawaiian Studies on campus.
Even though he's currently bed ridden at home under doctor's orders, Kanalu accomplishes more in one day than most. Setting up his bedroom as his office, the world now comes to Kanalu - literally.
He meets on almost a daily basis with dignitaries and educators from all over the world as well as conducting his work for the university - all from his bed. Of course we went calling on Kanalu, in his office/bedroom, and found an amazing individual indeed who lets absolutely nothing stop him.
So if you're looking for a big dose of high inspiration and want to meet a world-class expert at showing us all how to become unstoppable as well as putting our own challenges in perspective, sit down with your entire family and meet Hawai`i's Superman.
THURSDAY, December 29th - On Ho`ike, Channel 52 at 8:30 PM"Woman Of Accomplishment - A Visit With Jackie Kaho`okele Burke." In another of our second season segments, Jackie reminds us of the saying, "If you want something done, just ask a busy person to do it."
As if being publisher of the `Oiwi Files wasn't enough, Jackie has somehow found time to launch a plan for Sovereignty Buses that will travel throughout Hawai`i as well as across the US to educate and spread the message of Kanaka Maoli self-determination. On top of that, she plans to film a documentary on the project as the buses travel.
And did we mention that she also has not one but two masters degrees as part of her action plan?
We're sure you'll agree that Jackie's a superb role model for making things happen as she shares with us her exciting vision for the future of Hawai`i.
Don't miss our interview with this wahine whose boundless energy and ideas never seem to end!

With Senator John McCain chairing the Senate Hearings, what Kai`opua found was that only those supporting the bill were scheduled to speak despite his numerous attempts to be included.

CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT HAWAIIANS THINK ABOUT THE AKAKA BILL ?"...the Akaka bill, the legislation establishes a process for the nation's 400,000 Native Hawaiians to be formally recognized by theUnited States as an indigenous people. Native Hawaiians could then decide to pursue a sovereigngovernment that could negotiate with the U.S.over land use and other rights...."
Listen To What One Hawaiian Says...Let's be quite clear on this. This is in conflict of the bona fide Hawaii Nationals of the Kingdom living today. As descendants of the Kingdom's subjects, 15.6% were foreign ethnicity who embraced the Hawaiian Kingdom and were loyal to it. It already has a Contiturional government that has jusrisdiction to negotiate with not only the US but other nations whom it has treaties with throughout the world. The US needs to deoccupy our country and are governed by the laws of occupation. The hoax and myth promulgated by the US is exposed and admitted by them. Their covert and overt actions has also been uncovered and deem them to be in violation of domestic and international laws. It's time to end the charade and realize the facts from the revised US history. The piper must now be paid.

UH-OH! HERE WE GO AGAIN!MESSAGE TO SENATOR AKAKA - WHAT PART OF "NO TO AKAKA BILL" DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ? The Honolulu Advertiser -Thursday, December 22, 2005
Assurances have been given by Senate leaders that they will work to have the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act placed on the calendar when Congress is in session next year, Sen. Dan Akaka said today in a news release.
Better known as the Akaka bill, the legislation establishes a process for the nation's 400,000 Native Hawaiians to be formally recognized by the United States as an indigenous people. Native Hawaiians could then decide to pursue a sovereign government that could negotiate with the U.S. over land use and other rights.
The bill was expected to be aired on the Senate floor during the summer but stalled when Congress diverted its attention to legislation related to
Hurricane Katrina.
Akaka said he spoke to both Majority Leader Bill Frist and Minority Leader Harry Field and that both pledged take the appropriate steps....
Congress adjourns for the year this week and returns to a regular schedule Jan. 18.
FREEHAWAII.INFO PRESENTS A SPECIAL REPORT - FROM COUNTERCURRENTS.ORG"THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE OF HAWAI`I"And Now, The Conclusion -By Amy MarshIt is easy for people from the mainland to ignore or dismiss the history of Hawai'i, yet the illegal occupation of Hawai'i continues to have a huge detrimental effect on the people, the environment and the culture. The struggle for Hawaiian independence is a long standing, bitterly fought cause which deserves wider recognition and support from the rest of the world. Free Hawai'i, now.
FREEHAWAII.INFO PRESENTS A SPECIAL REPORT - FROM COUNTERCURRENTS.ORG"THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE OF HAWAI`I"Here's Part Six -By Amy MarshNow, not every Native Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian is a sovereignty activist working toward restoration of the kingdom. Many have adjusted to colonization and consider themselves Americans. At most, they may be supporters of the dangerous Akaka bill, thinking to preserve Hawaiian "entitlements" through a federal recognition process that will turn them into the equivalent of American Indians.
But there are many others who recognize the bill for what it is - a way to finalize the land grab of the Kingdom and take title of contested kanaka maoli [Native Hawaiian] lands once and for all - and who are vigorously opposed to the bill. They do not consider themselves "American" and continue to insist upon being recognized as subjects of the Kingdom. As one man put it to me, when I asked him about his livelihood, "I work for the Queen." In other words, he has devoted the rest of his life to the restoration of his country. He is not alone.Tomorrow... The Conclusion
FREEHAWAII.INFO PRESENTS A SPECIAL REPORT - FROM COUNTERCURRENTS.ORG"THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE OF HAWAI`I"Here's Part Five -By Amy MarshIn 1897, approximately 21,000 Hawaiians - more than half the adult Hawaiian population - signed and presented a petition protesting annexation to the United States. Congress ignored them. Despite the petition evidence to the contrary, it was far more lucrative for Congress to accept the assurances of missionary lobbyists who claimed the Hawaiians were eager for annexation.
This "Ku'e Petition" of resistance to annexation - 556 pages long, and possibly one of the most significant documents of protest in American, as well as Hawaiian, history - was buried deeply in the U.S. National Archives until it was found by Noenoe Silva in 1998, over a hundred years later. The discovery of the petition, and the exhibition of this document by the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, had an enormous impact on the kanaka maoli, [Native Hawaiian] who searched the pages eagerly for the names of their grandparents and great-grandparents. As Silva puts it, "The petition, inscribed with the names of everyone's kupuna, gave people permission from their ancestors to participate in the quest for national sovereignty. More important, it affirmed for them that their kupuna had not stood by idly, apathetically, while their nation was taken from them."Tomorrow...Happy Americans Or Independence Fighters?
FREEHAWAII.INFO PRESENTS A SPECIAL REPORT -FROM COUNTERCURRENTS.ORG"THE INDEPENDENCE STRUGGLE OF HAWAI`I"Here's Part Four -By Amy MarshA bit of history: on January 17, 1893, Queen Lili`uokalani was forced from her throne by American businessmen and business-minded missionary sons, with the help of John L. Stevens, the American Minister to the Hawaiian Kingdom, and the American navy. The overthrow was violent, unjustified, insulting, and in complete violation of international law. U.S. President Benjamin Harrison apparently gave unofficial encouragement to the conspirators in 1892 and after the overthrow he presented their annexation petition to the U.S. Senate. But incoming President Grover Cleveland was appalled. He withdrew the petition before the Senate could act, called for an investigation, and issued a powerful statement to reinstate the queen and the rightful government. But the treasonous provisional government refused to comply. President Cleveland was also opposed by powerful interests within the United States who were loathe to part with their juicy prize.Tomorrow...Massive Resistance To Annexation
HAWAIIAN INDEPENDENCE AT THE UNITED NATIONS ON VOICES OF TRUTH - ONE-ON-ONE WITH HAWAI`I'S FUTUREThis last May for the fourth year, the Koani Foundation participated in the Permanent Forum On Indigenous Issues at the United Nations in New York City.
As a result, we were able to tape two Voices Of Truth segments at the UN so we could share with you, our viewers, exactly what transpires at this annual forum as well as how we bring the issues of Independence and the current foreign occupation of Hawai`i to the awareness of this world body.
This week we are delighted to debut part one.
In it, we reveal a blow-by-blow account of what transpired about a month before, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, in a Senate hearing room on the Akaka bill.
Naturally, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and others tried to have only one side of the story told - their side. But not all went exactly as planned.
So if you're curious to hear what went on in that room as well as what wasn't reported in the mainstream news, join us as we share our experiences and analysis with you this week from the United Nations on Voices Of Truth - One-On-One With Hawai`i's Future.

HERE'S WHAT PRESIDENT GROVER CLEVELAND SAID ABOUT THE ILLEGAL OVERTHROW OF HAWAI`I -“By an act of war, committed with the participation of a diplomatic representative of the U.S. and without authority of Congress, the Government of a feeble but friendly and confiding people has been overthrown.” Cleveland continued that the U.S. Government occupied “the position of having actually set up a temporary government on foreign soil for the purpose of acquiring through that agency territory which we had wrongfully put in its possession. The control of both sides of a bargain acquired in such a manner is called by a familiar and unpleasant name when found in private transactions.” The familiar and unpleasant name found in private transactions is “fraud.”President Cleveland further stated: “a candid and thorough examination of the facts will force the conviction that the provisional government [of Hawai`i]owes its existence to an armed invasion by the U.S. Fair-minded people with the evidence before them will [not] claim that the Hawaiian Government was overthrown by the people of the islands or that the provisional government had ever existed with their consent.”

And did we mention that she also has not one but two masters degrees as part of her action plan?
We're sure you'll agree that Jackie's a superb role model for making things happen as she shares with us her exciting vision for the future of Hawai`i.

DENYING U.S. ROLE IN OVERTHROW DELUSIONAL
The Honolulu Advertiser - December 1, 2005 I would like to thank Mr. Thomas E. Stuart for his letter of Nov. 22, "U.S. a scapegoat in overthrow." His narrow-minded, delusional remarks only strengthen our resolve to persevere toward sovereignty.
Disgusting and deplorable comments about our queen and kupuna [ancestors]will never alter the historical facts that the U.S. military and its colonizing cohorts instituted events that affected the future of our nation. Continuing to deny or refusing to accept these facts will make him and others with such mindsets prime thumb-sucking complaining crybaby candidates running for cover and consoling under the skirts of his U.S. Constitution.
Historical fact refuters only fool themselves. Go on, keep living in a fantasy dream world, for someday the sovereignty movement will emerge as a strong new nation making things pono! [correct]By then it'll be too late for Johnny-come-lately wannabes like Stuart to admit that Hawaiians were wronged. Feeling sorry for himself, or worse, unwilling to grasp the politics of it all, will overwhelmingly cause lousy judgment and a lack of preparedness on his part to cope with it all.
We are here! We are the facts! We are the evidence! We will prevail!Gary K. Nihipali Hau'ula, Hawai`i
WHAT SHOULD AMERICANS DO TO HELP HAWAI`I RECOVER ITS INDEPENDENCE ?US Americans should start using critical thinking in resolving the Hawaiian issue. If, in fact, the US is unlawfully occupying Hawai`i; logically it should deoccupy it. One should become familiar with the laws of occupation to understand the issues. One will also understand the folly of the Akaka Bill and what it seditiously represents. The misrepresentation of the facts have been fostered on the US Americans and what has and is being done in their name. Amid the myths and hoax lie documented facts with US admittance of misprison through covert and overt activities to destabilize the Hawaiian Kingdom, invasion, and takeover through a declaration among those involved, with the complicity of the USA and unbeknownst to the subjects of the Kingdom. This then took shape in a fake revolution to validate the nefarious actions spurred by the US government officials and their US American counterparts residing within the Hawaiian Kingdom....

IT'S INDEPENDENCE HAWAIIANS WANTHonolulu Advertiser - November 29, 2005Hawaiians on both sides of the Akaka bill discussion ultimately want the same thing — they want their kingdom back. From what I have observed of politically active descendants of Hawaiian citizens, they look forward to the day when they can elect a king or queen again.
Some see the Akaka bill as a step in that direction; others fear that it will impede progress toward their goal, but, make no mistake, that goal is independence. This is a political issue, not a racial issue.
"The cause of Hawai'i and independence is larger and dearer than the life of any man connected with it. Love of country is deep-seated in the breast of every Hawaiian, whatever his station." — Lili'uokalani, Hawai'i's last queen.
"This is a historical issue, based on a relationship between an independent government and the United States of America, and what has happened since and the steps that we need to take to make things right." — Republican Gov. Linda Lingle, January 2003.
"The recovery of Hawaiian self-determination is not only an issue for Hawai'i, but for America. ... Let all of us, Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian, work toward a common goal. Let us resolve ... to advance a plan for Hawaiian sovereignty." — Democratic Lt. Gov. Ben Cayetano, 1988.
The United Church of Christ has apologized, the United States of America has apologized. The international community, including nations with whom the kingdom of Hawai'i has treaties have acknowledged that Hawai'i's right to self-determination has never been extinguished.
Descendants of Hawaiian citizens are still considering their options. They have a right to do that and to do so in their own time.Rolf Nordahl Waikiki, O`ahu

THE TRUTH IS OUT - 99% OF ALL HAWAIIANS DID NOT WANT THE U.S. TO ANNEX HAWAI`IThe Maui News - Letter to the EditorThurston Twigg-Smith pointed out his March 31 letter that the Native Hawaiian speaker of the House of the Legislature in 1898 requested the U.S. to annex Hawai`i.How ironic that 99 percent of this speaker's countrymen, almost all of the Native Hawaiians throughout all the islands, signed a petition to U.S. Congress asking that the U.S. not annex Hawai`i.This petition was rediscovered in the U.S. Archives only within the past 10 years, and today's Hawaiians were proud to find the signatures of their ancestors on this document.Kathy CorcoranLahaina, Maui
WHAT ARE THE FOUR ELEMENTS OF SOVEREIGNTY AND SELF-DETERMINATION ?1. A land base - the Hawaiian islands.2. A distinct population - all peoples possessing the inherent right to the Hawaiian kingdom.3. A Government - the government that was unlawfully overthrown.4. Sovereignty itself and the right to exercise it. A place in the Family of Nations.
